I'm GAS'ing pretty bad over the Hagstrom Viking right at the moment. Especially the p90-version.

I can't really tell what's the big difference between these to: (Viking IIp Ultralux & Viking P).
Does any of you know how they compare tonally/playing-wise? I haven't been able to find a lot of details online.

How basic is that Chord Chemistry-book mentioned a few pages back?

From reading reviews it sounds like it's somewhat complicated. I have some idea of what interval are. Is that a good starting-point?

Can any of you recognize this?:

e|---------------------|-------------------|
b|---------------------|-------------------|
g|---------7h9p7-------|----------9b--7----|
d|---7--9---------9----|----7--9-------9---|
a|---------------------|-------------------|
E|---------------------|-------------------|

I feel like I've heard it before, but I can't place it.

h is hammer-on, p is pull-off and b is bend a full note and release.

Sounds a bit like Black Dog in a way? That's a really common little bluesy box riff so it depends how you're playing it really, you could have heard it anywhere

e- do you mean that's a pre-bend in the second bit (bend 7 to 9, play it and let it back down to 7), or are you bending 9 to 11? That would make it a bit more unusual!

The bend is right after the string is picked at the 9th fret. So 9 - bend to 11 and release.

It might actually be a garbled version of the riff from Edwyn Collins - A girl like you, come to think of it.
Or maybe it's just common enough that it sounds familiar.

Yeah. It's not like there's a shortage of good or even great guitars on the market. But you got to have an X-guitar to sound like Slash/Hendrix/Clapton.

I'm getting back into playing guitar again. I have a Yamaha dreadnought style acoustic and I'm hoping to replace it with another acoustic that's everything the dreadnought is not. What I'm looking for is something small, easy to play, light under the fingers. I'll probably be using a pick and have smallish hands so a thin neck might also be good. I guess I'm kind of looking for an electric guitar I can play without an amp. Where do I start looking? Any suggestions? Budget is £200, $325.

Maybe a centerblock semi-acoustic? I have a Hagstrom Viking that has a quite skinny neck. It's over your budget though. But there's probably an Epiphone Dot or something like it in your price-range.

Which three scales would you learn first if you were a beginner again? Which are most useful/common?

Is it smarter to start by:

a) learning scale X in one key, all positions on the fretboard or

b) learning scale X in all keys, one position each?

How big of a change in string-gauge can you generally get away with before you need to get your guitar set up again?
I'm thinking I want 9s instead of 10s on my electric. It's a Hagstrom Viking, which supposedly has a very stable trussrod.
Will there any appreciable difference in string-pull between a 9-42 and a 9-46-set?

It's weird because it's one of the first areas where I've noticed I have a preference in my playing. That must mean some kind of progress.

There's a piece I am playing on my VMJM in which the composer calls for me to tune my high e string down to a D while playing, and as I am practicing it, I'm noticing little clicks at the nut as the string moves down in pitch. I have to tune it down the whole step pretty quickly (over the course of like four 4/4 bars at ~132).

I am imagining this is caused by a small burr or something in the nut groove, and that if I practice this part a bunch (which I need to do), it might snap the string. Or it could do this during a performance, which would be LOVELY.

As a weirdo classical guitarist, I have plenty of good metal files and low-grit sandpaper lying around, but no idea how to smooth out a nut slot properly. Can anyone explain it to a noob well enough for me to try to fix it myself?

Try lubricating the groove with some graphite from a pencil before you break out the sand paper.

I'm playing with the idea of getting a project-guitar to mess around with pickup configuration and whatnot. I got my heart set on a tele and a 500$ budget (but it can be cheaper).

So far I've looked at Squier Affinity, Squier Classic Vibe, some of the cheaper G&L Asat-models.

What would you get in that situation?

When you say 'pickup configuration' do you mean switching in humbuckers? I've seen some reports that the Classic Vibe Custom has humbucker routing in the neck position, so you'd only need to get a new pickguard instead of routing your body.

If you're still working out the electronics, the Bill Lawrence site has some interesting configurations you might find inspiring! The stock pickups on a lot of Squiers are great IMO, and it's really easy to work on the electronics so you're in for a great time.

I plan to do all kinds of messing around with this guitar. Experimenting with the pickup-wiring, maybe routing the neck for a p-90 and playing around with component-values. I have access to a metal-workshop so I might try to machine a brass bridge-plate or a nut.

Eventually I'd like to build an electric from (near)-scratch, so this is a learning-project.

Mainland Europe try Thomann.de and compare their Harley Benton range to full price. The £30 vintage overdrive pedal competes well with full on Ibanez Tubescreamers and their diy kits are the best around if you have basic woodworking skills.

UK you have loads of stores with big sales right now, Andertons, GAK, and GuitarGuitar for examples.

Rondo you have to pay shipping and most guitars want a mandatory hardcase too so not worth it for the UK/EU.

I have one of the Thomann telecasters. The TE-80. It's super well made for a 90-100£ guitar.
There's some lemons in the Harley Benton brand though, so it's worth your time to google for some reviews before you buy one.

I thought about just spending the extra 20 Euro and getting another Epiphone LP Special II like the one I used to have back in the States (it's just a tad more expensive than the Thomann TE-80 you mentioned). I really quite liked playing it, it was comfortable and I enjoyed the sound for a lower-priced beginner guitar.

Edit: comparing these two bundles. They're roughly the same price, and it seems a fairly decent start. Similar to the setup I bought for myself back in the US way back when (though I got a much more expensive amp)

Harley Benton TE-80 Bundle
Epiphone Slash AFD LP Performance Pack

I'd probably jump on that second one if it were the EB color and not the AFD, but details.

Like I said, the TE-80 is very good for the money. Only downside Imho is that it's heavy. Like, Les Paul-heavy. But they have a lot of different guitars (even if you only look at their TE-series). So there's bound to be something you can use.
