Just picked up a Kindle 3. I'm liking it but mine does some flicker of reverse contrast between pages and screens.. is this standard behaviour? It's driving me up the loving wall.

Yeah it was initially, but after about six hours of reading on the thing it's not too bad. It was mainly the unknown aspect before I knew it was inherent to e-ink.
