I liked the Necessary Response album, I hope it's not gonna be worse than the original. His new style with AP isn't actually that different from Necessary Response, except it's more poppy, so I wonder what this re-recording would add. The new song is tidy, but I find it less interesting than the old stuff. Doesn't fit the mood of the album that well either. Maybe it'd grow on me though. Would have linked "Unter Null - Obligatory Club Hit To Appease The Masses" but it's not on Youtube any more. More seriously, there is quite a bit of crossover between techno and industrial and there is a thing called industrial techno. I'm just not really the right person to advise on it. I think this is a recent example of it: https://soundcloud.com/perc/sets/ansome-stowaway-perc-trax Also Blush Response is hyped: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pj37qoDIGLE Phase Fatale: https://soundcloud.com/phasefatale Headless Horseman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgScMnL3fqA If you look for related artists on these I guess you'll find similar stuff! For something slightly more experimental try Haujobb's latest album Blendwerk. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiOlDtE-fyg Entropist fucked around with this message at 02:02 on Apr 4, 2016 |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOwje7jP4wU Cross-posted from the Dutch thread. A Dutch TV show from 1989 examining the club culture around acid house, new beat and EBM, including a live demonstration (at 7:50 in the video). It's a pity there are no subtitles, it is quite interesting. They're talking about how it was a new trend sweeping the nation and is already on its return. The DJs speculate that acid house is dying out, but new beat and EBM will have more longetivity. The presenter is focusing on it being mindless and thoughtless and without rules, and questions them about ecstasy usage.

Two other electro-industrial acts with unusual sounds are/were Flesh Field (orchestral-ish sound) and Fractured (glitchy). They were already around in 2004 though.

I quite like Fractured's 2011 release too, the sound is updated and the vocals are clearer but the style is still there. Now I'm not sure which version of Only Human Remains I have... but I still listen to it a lot. I've never seen them live, but it seems to be some sort of modern hype to add one or two guitarists to these bands and then change all the old songs to accommodate this. The result is generally terrible. I guess it's everyone copying Combichrist? I saw Grendel recently and they had done this too. While it somewhat fit in with their newest songs (which I don't mind) it made a mess of their older ones. The typical Grendel thumping was nowhere to be heard, many interesting synth parts were stripped out and they just sounded like terrible metal-ish covers and rearrangements.

I saw FLA live earlier this year, it was a fun and energetic show in a small venue, and the setlist was a good mix of popular and more obscure classics, and a bunch of Echogenetic tracks. Certainly still worth going to! Hard to point out a favourite album, I guess Caustic Grip is a good choice among the old ones, and Civilization later on.

RantRadio Industrial is the only one I still listen to sometimes, and the best one I found: http://rantmedia.ca/industrial/ Apparently Digital Gunfire still exists too, and Dark Asylum which seemed more aggrotech-y, and Schwarze Welle for a more German and more gothy approach. But I haven't listened to these last few in like a year or two. I'm sure there are others too. These days, last.fm also streams from Youtube and Spotify and it can match quite well with what you have listened to in the past (pulling up a mix of songs that you played before and ones that you didn't but are in the same genres), so that's what I use more often now as an alternative to streaming radio.

The impression I got from going to see a few formerly big name neofolk bands in Europe is that they are people who liked to be edgy with crypto-fascist stuff 20 years ago but now just like to hang out with their 20 friends who come to their show. And the music that they actually played now was not much like the neofolk that they were known for, it was either more industrial-experimental or more pop. This is just a vague impression on the basis of seeing Der Blutharsch and a few other such bands in the last few year at local shows though, I'm sure there are still bands around that take this stuff seriously. But these experiences did not exactly make me worried about a fascist takeover of the scene.

in Amsterdam, good options to check out are Vondelbunker, Occii, Vrankrijk, OT301 and Volta (not entirely sure about Volta, at some point they had a rule to only take bands from Amsterdam). Though in many of these cases I think the artists do not interact with the venue directly but with some promotor from the scene that uses that venue.

But if you want something non-spoopy from him, this Simple Minds tribute EP is quite interesting: https://leaetherstrip.bandcamp.com/album/reptile-man-drop-a-tribute-to-simple-minds Its interesting that you mention Soft Cell because he also released a Soft Cell tribute EP at some point, you should look that up too.

Also, I went to a Grendel show earlier this year (before this album came out) and it was so much fun. The newer songs (from Timewave Zero) work very well live. The old aggrotech ones had been reworked to add guitar and remove some of the aggrotechiness, which I didn't always like, but it made the show more coherent I guess.
