Technically Amtrak doesn’t have any yet. They have some on order; I assume the ones on the train that collided with the truck were running for testing. The ones Amtrak operates right now are actually owned by state governments.

Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner has had them for over a year. Quieter than what they replaced.

They haven't been that bad from what I've overheard from the mechanical side. Doing better than the GEs they replaced but tier 4 diesels come with a steep learning curve. Cummins is the easiest locomotive engine manufacturer to work with so that helped.

Wait, is this the section of track the train was diverted to? The section where the speed limit was around 15kpm for a train which usually ran at over 100kph? And it had no signals?

Yes.

Signal box caught fire the other week so they had a pilot sit with drivers over this section of track while repairs were being made.

This section of track is right beside the mainline, it is just a passing loop (I think) and this accident has cut off freight and intercity passenger trains between Melbourne and Sydney. Although I think the line is cleared by now, it has been a week.

The driver killed had written about that line being shithouse: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-02-24/driver-of-wallan-train-had-raised-concerns-with-friend/11993466

quote:

The driver killed in the Sydney-to-Melbourne train derailment last week had told a friend about issues along the train line in the month before the fatal crash, an email shows.

The XPT train was carrying 153 passengers when it derailed near Wallan, north of Melbourne, on Thursday night.

Train driver John Kennedy, 54, and a 49-year-old train pilot from Castlemaine died at the scene. Eleven passengers were injured.

In an email to his friend Clive Williams on February 3, Mr Kennedy detailed a list of recent issues on the North East line.

"My last six Melbourne return trips have been very late or cancelled mainly due to train fault issues, 3 of the six runs I was down to one engine, on another trip I had no speedo and the only trip without a train fault was disrupted by the big derailment last week," he wrote.

The derailment he referred to in the email happened at Barnawartha, near the Victoria-New South Wales border, in late January.

Mr Williams, a military professor at the Australian National University and a member of the Canberra-Sydney Rail Action Group, told the ABC Mr Kennedy was fond of the ageing XPT train but issues made it difficult for him to do his job.

He said Mr Kennedy did not have safety concerns relating to the train itself, but was worried about the stretch of track between Albury and Melbourne.

"It was pretty rough track," Mr Williams said.

"It was a lot of sideways, violent sideways movement on some sections."

The XPT service is run by NSW TrainLink, part of Transport for NSW, on federal tracks managed by the Australian Rail Track Corporation [ARTC].

....

That other de-railment was a container falling off a freight train.

A cool video of a ride through the Hoosac tunnel.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFjZJet_9VQ

For those who aren't familiar with it, it is a nearly 5 mile tunnel in western Massachusetts which was the longest in the world when it was completed in 1873. It took 22 years to construct which meant that when the work started holes were hand hammered and filled with black powder while by the end they were using pneumatic drills and dynamite. 196 workers were killed in the course of its construction.

There are two tracks close to the Vincent Thomas bridge that are also near the USNS Mercy. I wanted to see if I could figure out which track the train derailed from. One is a curving siding with a dead-end far from the USNS Mercy, the other is a straight stub.

It would be possible to derail the train on either track. But the train crashed through several barriers, a few train cars, chainlink fences, and it traveled a few hundred feet past the rails.

I think that's more consistent with a derailment at the stub. I also think that I like trying to figure out how disasters happened and that might not be socially appropriate. And that I should have been in bed a few hours ago but I'm feeling too tense because everything is awful in the world. Besides trains. And plants. And pets. And a lot of things are good actually.

Whenever I half-rear end a project I narrate it in my head like I'm in a CSB video.

"The instructions for the fire extinguisher bracket clearly indicated that the bracket did not come with any means to attach the bracket to the wall. And they instructed the purchaser to securely attach it to the wall using four heavy-duty screws that were at least two inches long. These screws could be drilled directly into a solid surface like a stud, or they could be secured using some manner of wall anchor.

The technician, perhaps lacking the proper screws or perhaps pressed for time, installed the bracket using three different screws and three different drywall anchors. Only two of the screws and two of the anchors would have been rated for this purpose."

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — U.S. train horns can deliver an ear-splitting jolt to drivers sitting in traffic or people drifting off to sleep at home, but on Thursday, they’ll be put to another use.

At 3 p.m. EDT, trains across the U.S. will sound their horns to honor the transportation employees who are considered essential workers during the coronavirus crisis.

Amtrak trains, along with regional partner trains across the U.S., plan to give two blasts of their horns in a toot to transportation workers, as well as health care workers, first-responders, child care workers, grocery store employees and other workers providing essential services during the pandemic.

“Every hero deserves to be recognized and thanked for their courage, selflessness and the help they are providing to this country during this time,” Stephen Gardner, Amtrak’s chief operating and commercial officer, said in a statement.
