The logic is that people with lower credit scores are less likely to pay their bills, so they hedge their bet by charging a ridiculously higher interest rate. They have to be a little more transparent about it these days (like with credit card offers) but not much more.

I'm asking why would someone be charged a higher rate if they qualify for a lower one, especially if it is the difference between making a sale.

It's like buying a car, if you can get away with charging someone more without them haggling about it then you will. At least that's my assertion.

Because if it's like car dealerships, that extra interest % is just more money in their pockets. They count on most people not finding out what a lender outside of the sale would charge you in terms of interest, and will always try to put another point or two on top of what you qualify for if you finance through the dealership.

Is it Bush's baked beans that has the commercial of the guy looking for some canned beans in a grocery store and is in the aisle that is just a loving wall of the brand and its varieties, and upon discovering these varieties he just freaks the gently caress out? 'SLOW COOKED? WHY THE gently caress NOT?!' 'BROWN SUGAR? I JUST CAME IN MY PANTS' 'FIESTA BAKE? THERE ARE NO RULES, KILL THE PIG SPILL ITS BLOOD' My recollection isn't all that great but I'm pretty sure that's what he says, or it's pretty close. I loving hate that commercial. It's just loving canned beans, bro!

Yeah, well, as you might expect, they people both most likely to need and most likely to buy that protection are not the most literate among us. Seriously, I've had cellphones for 12 years now, and have been carrying two for the past 4 years, and the worst thing that's ever happened to any of them is one time the back glass on my iPhone 4 shattered and I needed to get it replaced for $30. I'm sure if you add up all the money I've saved by not buying idiocy protection for retarded morons, I've probably saved enough to buy at least two brand-new phones out of contract. On the other hand, I know a guy who, between loss and theft, goes through at least one smartphone per year (sometimes more!).

I'm the same way....and coincidentally also got my first phone 12 years ago. I've always hated that you need to get a case for everything, which I feel just makes you think the phone is invulnerable and be less careful (and also partially defeats the purpose of caring about the design of the phone). I've never had a case on my phone, and only this summer did I "damage" a phone for the first time....the tempered glass did its job absorbing the energy and no harm done after peeling that off. Aside from that I had my Droid 2 bricked by Verizon with a mandatory software update (which just happened to contain a boot loader revision that prevented users from flashing custom ROMs onto the device, yet that boot loader was ONLY released for that model which was universally incompatible with the other updates......), and I had a screen just die for no reason. I have a drawer of a decade of perfectly functional old phones somewhere. The rest of my family seems to have a smartphone life span of about 6 months. When that Droid was bricked, I went to replace it only to find out they blew through all of our upgrades and I had to buy a new phone at full price (getting off their plan when the contract is up again, dumbfucks gave up our unlimited data that we were grandfathered in to keep as long as we never got rid of it).
