Discogs apparently hasn't been updated. Guerssen put out legit (-ish?) reissues of a bunch of period Manco LPs: http://www.guerssen.com/catalogue.php?format=ALL&genre=ALL&field=ALL&field_text=baris Forced Exposure has most of them in stock. They're all well sourced and good quality (or at least close to the OGs, some poo poo's hot/blown out a bit.)

only temporary posted:I guess this means I should probably invest in some cleaning materials. I don't typically mind it since I'm only paying $1 for most of what I've got. For dollar / flea records you really just need a spray bottle and a couple of old tshirts and it'll make a big difference: JehovahsWetness posted:Unless you're going to pony up for a vacuum cleaner / VPI of some sort the best bang for your buck is just the super simple alcohol solution: %25 isopropyl alcohol (91%), %75 water (distilled if you're on the spectrum), and like one or two drops of dish soap to act as a surfactant. Apply w/ a spray or squeeze bottle, rub circularly with microfibre cloth, repeat a couple of times, let air dry for like 30 seconds. Stoked to finally get a copy of the best BR looks-like-but-isn't-inept-thrash LP:

pwn posted:How does a diamond, literally the hardest substance on Earth, “wear” against plastic? It's normally poo poo in the grooves like dust the slowly abrade the polish and basically round off the tip a bit. It takes a long time and depends on the record being played, but it happens. The cantilever suspension also wears out (depending on the rubber at the base, etc), which will change the strike angle of the tip and expose new edges to catch more poo poo, etc. So the plastic's not really the culprit, it's the collected poo poo in the groove. Clean your record, occasionally your stylus, and a good cart will last well past the 1k "average" unless there's mechanical failure.

MrSargent posted:It's VMP Announcement Day and I must say this could be my favorite month to date. You used to be able to just email Miller and buy a copy of Oriental Jazz since he had a bunch of dead stock. You'd get a package with the LP and like 20 CD-R's of just random stuff he'd recorded and a couple of burned DVDs of his TV appearances. It was a pretty cool package, but I ended up just giving the CDs and poo poo to other people. I think he still randomly posts copies on eBay every other month or something.

MrSargent posted:Yah it's honestly not a bad total price including international shipping. Might have to pull the trigger. I've probably got ~400 45s, mostly funk/soul. Most heavy soul collections end up being mostly 45, just because you end up in the weeds. I did a soul/funk night for a while and it was a LOT easier to carry a flight case of 45s than a bunch of 12s. If you don't care about rare-spotters then you can actually put together a decent set w/ cheapies, might take awhile to find clean copies. Also, because I was usually playing to a punk/divebar crowd that like the music but didn't know much about soul I'd do a chunk of songs well known as samples / covers to get people onto the floor and always got good response. (_everybody_ knows the intro to Harlem Shuffle and the bridge from Lyn Collins - Think) here's the ones that were in the case:

Jico makes a Shure M44 drop-in replacement that's pretty much the exact same as the discontinued Shure stylus: https://www.jico-stylus.com/product_info.php?products_id=1740 Shure M44s are awesome for kind of off-condition 45s, probably track too heavy for styrene (especially if you're back queuing it). I never set mine at the recommended 3g, either.

The crosley rig was someone needle dropping cheap 7"s, there's an actual decent listening station just out of frame. The place is tiny, though, so it's all crammed together. It's Face Records in Brooklyn, very boutique prices (_especially_ on city pop woooo) but dude moves that poo poo out the door. Prices on other genres are high but the selection is pretty drat cool and the owner there was crazy nice. I bought a pricey private jazz record with a single decent mark on it and he insisted we sit and listen to that spot and seemed honestly apologetic about it having a problem. (Which was clearly described on the pricing / info label.) Off the top of my head from what I remember: House ~$120, Magical ~$900/950, Plastic Love ~$300, Amy ~$800. He's sold multiples of all this stuff locally at these kind of prices, the price premium for good records in NYC is very real. He's also doing record arbitrage back to the shops in Tokyo, too. So I think locals do a lot of trade with him for stuff that sells decently in JP but isn't worth individual buyers shipping (rap 12"s, etc). I hit like 8 record stores in NYC and bought a decent stack of records but Face was probably my favorite just because of how niche the selection and business plan was.

CPL593H posted:I love that they sell for premium prices like that and the turntable to preview records is a loving Crosley. It's not, though? Someone was just needle dropping the dollar bin 7"s. There's a 1200 with headphones right next to that shelf, plus the system behind the counter. Prices are through the roof, I get it, but it's a good shop, grading is solid etc.

THERE'S NO FUN IN RECORDS! The funniest bit of the store is that's it's like 80% JP artists and imports, but there's just normal-rear end boring US store stock mixed in the "genre" sections. Except it's all marked up in the same kind of way and probably would have just been like a $5 - $10 whatever pricing in a normal store because you've got a box full of em in the back kind of thing. Dudes came in and happily bought a White Glove priced US Elton John - S/T while I was there. I would like to see what they're shipping back to Japan. It also looks like they're shipping jazz/soul/funk rares in from JP that are languishing over there or something because the number of high dollar US stuff just in the New Arrivals was kinda nuts. I didn't even really bother looking at the Rock sections cause I was in a hurry.
