Going to Vegas for the first time first week of August for BlackHat/Defcon. My buds apparently want to stay at MGM Grand while the conference is at Caesar's. Their idea is to take the monorail but it looks like it stops hella far from Caesar's. I'm going to an event at Paris before BlackHat and probably staying there as well for a couple days.

What I'm asking is: how much of a pain is it going to be to get between MGM or Paris and Caesar's each morning/afternoon? Does it really matter where I stay? Which place has better rooms and breakfast?

Edit: I've never really gambled either, should I start playing online poker to figure out how to play Texas Hold'Em or just not play poker at all while there?

Edit2: Recommend me some good microbrew bars since I'm sortof a beer nut and not totally into getting sloshed on bad beer or rum&coke-type drinks.

Fake edit: If I want to play golf but my handicap is 36 (just started playing really) are there any good courses around to play at where I won't get laughed at for being a sortof beginner? Will I suffer heatstroke and die if I try to play in August? I'm from Sweden so definitely not used to desert heat but man I love me some golf.

Thanks for the info guys!

I think this is one of the better brewpubs in the casinos - http://www.montecarlo.com/restaurants/the-pub.aspx

Having been to the real thing I'll probably pass on Hofbräuhaus, but The Pub looks like it's right up our collective alley, thanks.

The walk is not a pain at all. In fact walking the strip is great compared to a cab. Now, walking from MGM to Sahara/Stratosphere, not a good idea (I did it pre-monorail, there and back). Golf in August will be hot but I never sweat in Vegas and never mind the heat, but I have not golfed in August in Vegas. It matters where you stay if you are a homebody and don't want to move around for food and entertainment. But you are doing Vegas wrong if you stay on one or two properties the entire stay in my opinion. Monorails are convenient although many people hate them. It is fairly simple to move from property to property now with rails on both sides of the strip.

I more or less destroyed my feet since I was there for 10 days and had bad shoes for a couple of them, along with the dryness. Ended up taking the monorail between MGM and Caesars or cabbing it depending on how much of the trek I was up to. Seriously the monorail is waaay inconveniently place in the rear end-end of all the casinos, but seeing how run-down Flamingo was each morning made me feel better about my hotel choices. The cab line outside Caesars is loving hilarious, especially if you just walk over to Bally's there's hardly a line most times.

In retrospect I would have probably been better transport-wise staying at Paris for the duration, but the room was better in MGM. Staying at the Black Hat or DefCon hotels is not a good idea btw, unless you love lines.

Saturday, arrive at airport at 8pm local time, go to hotel and sleep

Don't. Jet lag will screw you and you'll wake up at 3am and be a zombie for the rest of the week.
Call your folks and then hit the strip, get stupid drunk, pass out and then wake up at 6am because timezones. I did this. Worked out great, my friends tried to do what you want to do and ended up hating themselves.

Plus it's saturday in vegas, who the gently caress wants to miss that? That's when all the action is.

edit: Internet in the rooms is crazy expensive, like $25 for poo poo wifi that keeps dropping out.

Sunday: spend the day at hotel recovering from jetlag and checking out the shopping opportunities there

Fashion Show Mall, Planet Hollywood, Caesars, Bellagio... every drat casino has shopping in some form. I took a cab out to some outlet mall place that kinda blew but my swedish friends wanted to go to.

re: EU Debit cards.
They work in ATMs, but better to change a fuckton of money ahead of time since the ATMs in the casinos charge like 5% for cash withdrawals, plus who knows what rate your bank will give you. Get a credit card anyway, since they work better with hotel reservations (A large reserve for a hotel room will gently caress with your bank account, whereas it doesn't affect you as much with a credit card).

A VISA debit card looks more or less like a credit card to the processing system.

People have jobs that don’t cover cabs to the airport? :aaaaa:

Anyhow, I’ve just heard some horror stories of trying to get in and out of the city during major conferences. Wondering how that impacts traffic and getting through security.

TSA Pre is life. Terminal 3 will sometimes randomly give a line TSA Pre treatment to move people through fast.

I don’t see the appeal of wanting to play craps or BJ behind plexiglass barriers with the dealers in PPE, but sure enough people are doing it

My limit on Vegas is 72 hours, after that it becomes overwhelming.

I personally wouldn’t think international travel is going to be a thing that soon - our wedding was planned to be in July 2020 in NorCal, which we moved to aug 2021 back in April. We moved it to 2022 last week since it’s not clear that US and Sweden will have things under control.

Vegas right now is weird AF but not in a good way. Assuming things get back to normal in a year, I’d wait until then to consider traveling

And especially the Rio, which has the sad bonus of only being Strip-adjacent and a real pain in the rear end to get to without taking a cab. At least they still have Penn and Teller, I guess?
