Enough about boring soulless electrogaze before someone decides to seriously recommend Ulrich Schnauss. For people who think there has not been any real gaze bands since the 90's, Swervedriver put this out last month and it is really boring and disappointing. Here is some cool stuff instead: Mumrunner are some dudes from Finland who put out two songs and I am really feeling it. Cloakroom some of their songs have a late era sonic youth feel to it OCEΔNSS finally put out a proper ep, and it is good Noir For Rachel is just pumping stuff out. Bills himself as darkgaze but whatever check it out because Fog Museum was pretty good. This compilation was released like two days ago and is really worth copping because it does a great job of gathering a bunch of different recent acts from all over with different styles. I don't care if you ignore everything else I put here if you download this. Is anyone else going to Austin Psych Fest? A lot of the bands in the OP are going to be there- The Jesus and Mary Chain, Primal Scream, Spiritualized (but not Sonic Boom). Im not going to miss it for anything. Also for some more BJM talk, I put Methadrone up there with some of the best shoegaze albums ever.

Super entry level, but does anyone own Loveless on vinyl, the original, authentic pressing? Is it worth it? I'm not into a lot of shoegaze as a whole but very into this particular album.

Mew is releasing a new album after 6 years. Bassist Johan left before the production of 2009's No More Stories but he has returned for the lastest album and tour. Check out the video for "Satellites". The full 6 minute version is on Spotify. They're going to SXSW this year, but I hope they make shows in other US cities. Been a huge fan for about ten years now. Any Mew fans on SA?

Went to The Black Ryder show in SF earlier this week as they kicked off their tour. Was pretty decent. You could tell it was the first show of the tour, as there were some minor things that they didn't quite feel solid on yet, but all in all they had a good sound and nice energy. I am guessing that the more they play on this tour, the better they are going to coalesce. Well worth the  or so you will drop on the show. I could listen to Aimee Nash croon all day I think. If you are a fan of a more "David Lynch'esque, alt-western" stylized version of shoegaze, you will most likely enjoy it. The first track, Autodidact, has all the stuff I love about Swervedriver: catchy hooks, swirling guitars, apocalyptic breakdown, hypnotic grooves.

Nothing loving sucks live and I'm way more upset about it than I should be. They were playing between Torche and Wrong (both who kicked rear end) and the guitarists of Nothing were so drunk they could barely stand, kept having equipment problems (might be related to their drunkenness) and dude threw his guitar into the crowd pretty unexpectedly. They pretty much played as loud as they could, but still sounded like poo poo. The bass player and the drummer kicked rear end, though.

Fleeting Joy's song "Lovely Crawl" is fantastic and very very close to what I was looking for, but I listened to the rest of the album and was like "meh". Disappointing, really. The last track on Distressor met every requirement except pitch-bending. Oh well.

Ride playing Toronto tonight!! So unbelievably excited. That said, listened to Tarantula for the first time ever today ... wow that was almost completely terrible. The solo acoustic track was okay.

The show was so so so so so so so so loving good. Sounded incredible. I'm mildly disappointed that I didn't get Here & Now or Grasshopper, but everything they did play was fantastic. They got all the other major highlights. Seagull and Polar Bear were huge.

 Effortpost alert Apologies if this band has come up before but… Cable were a four-piece guitar-based band from Derby, England who flourished briefly in the late 90s, only to be killed off by contractual disputes that cut them down just as they seemed to have reached – if not the threshold of fame – the threshold of a viable and productive career. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cable_(British_band) Matt Bagguley (vocals/guitar), Darius Hinks (guitar), Pete Darrington (bass), Neil Cooper (drums, up to 95), Richie Mills (drums 95-99). Cable’s music is characterised as fast-tempo indie rock, featuring looped guitar-riffs backed by a brutally tight rhythm section. Bagguley’s vocals had two modes: deadpan/laconic and shouty. I’ve heard the style compared to Fugazi’s and Rocket From The Crypt, though if you’ve got other comparisons I’d like to hear them. They released 3 albums and a live EP and although they only functioned early 90s-99, an evolution is detectable. Their music is long out of print but most of it is on Youtube. Youtube user Virusinsideus is one of the band members, I think. Channel #Cable has 55 videos. Their first short LP was Downlift the Uptrodden (1995), featuring the Jon Mayall parody sleeve photo (and amusing back cover in the same style). It featured Cable’s most intense and fastest tracks, including the standout singles: Blindman, Seventy and high-octane Murdering Spree. The most aggressive track is Oubliette, final LP track and also what they used to close out early live sets. (I was calling for Oubliette when they played live in Camden, not realising that they reserved that for the end. Perhaps they thought I was heckling for them to finish up.) The album got a lot of airplay on BBC Radio 1 and they recorded 4 Peel Sessions over the years. The follow-up LP When Animals Attack (1997) is noticeably less urgent and more radio-friendly, while still being fast tempo, riff-looped rock. It follows on from the 1996 single/EP Whisper Firing Line. My personal favourite track from the album is Colder Climate, especially the second part. The success of the LP and the less raw sound resulted in Cable’s music being used in a Sprite TV commercial. Although that was on Youtube it now seems to have disappeared. Instead you can enjoy their self-mocking The (We Did The Music For The Sprite Ad) Blues. A live EP recorded in Brixton Prison, London, was followed by what turned out to be their last LP Sub-Lingual (1999). This is distinctly more relaxed and accessible, with a singalong chorus for the eponymous track and a music video for the poppy single Arthur Walker. The hooks are still there – more catchy than nagging – with an infectious enthusiasm apparent, esp. in Bagguley’s vocals At this point contractual issues drove a wedge between band and management. Unable to release new music and even perform live (they had to perform some live gigs under the name Sparklehorse (?)), the band were trapped in legal limbo and eventually disbanded. The most frustrating thing – apart from being unable to produce new material – was that a few glimpses of the last recordings show that the old intensity and aggressive riffs were present in unreleased tracks. Midget, One for the Ladies and Untitled Instrumental are all tracks recorded around the time of Sub-lingual that are better than the released material. Sadly, those are strictly  territory and not on Youtube.Apart from one or two gigs in 2012, the band have never reformed and are now scattered to the winds but seem to be on good terms. If I was a millionaire and could hire any band for a private gig, it would these guys. Really exciting live, loads of energy and seemed on the edge of great new material… Apologies for the music press guff stuff but I love these guys and they are well worth a listen.
