Not really a scream but it is a cheesy as gently caress intro, not too long, are obviously trying to rip off black sabbath, and it had enough of an impact on me that it turned into a catchphrase even though no one I know is aware of Omen.

So it's pretty much the perfect metal intro.

Yeah I went to check when they popped into my head (when I made that post), and apparently they're about to go on a tour. No idea what they're up to outside of that.

Haven't listened to them in ages either, until today. Dunno why not, this poo poo still rules.

My understanding is that they have criminal records so can't get across the border. They did play there in like 1989 or something but not since then.

This sentence applies to pretty much any sub-genre tbf

I was kind of hoping the dungeon synth tag would be saved for D&D themed synth noise and 9 string guitars.

Not really because many 'subgenres' are much less formulaic than dungeon synth is.

Basically there were guys from a black metal background like mortiis in the 90s(those burzum synth records also qualify) doing lofi keyboard music, and at some point a few years ago dude with a blog ended up codifying this into a genre by calling it 'dungeon synth'. So if you just want an idea of what it sounds like the early mortiis ambient records like Keiser av en dimensjon ukjent or crypt of the wizard are fine. Gothmog - medieval jouneys is pretty good also.

as if all this was something more
than another footnote on a postcard from nowhere,
another chapter in the handbook for exercises in futility
Before limiting yourself with the tag "dungeon synth," listen to the Cold Meat Industry comp And Even Wolves Hid Their Teeth, which Mortiis fit into easily, and which will be a more diverse and interesting experience.

https://archive.org/details/Various-1995...AndEvenWolvesHidTheirTeethAndTongueWhereverShelterWasGiven

edit: apparently there are two versions of this, a Swedish and American, and the former is what's hosted on archive.org. I think I like some of these tracks more than what's on my American one. Neato.
