Ok, so I've run through all the DLC with this character, which was basically the standard sniper-nerd/diplomat that I roll for Fallout games. Now I want to start a fresh game so I can tackle the House and Legion endings.

These two endings seem to be very at odds with each other (eg, House wants President Kimball to live, Caesar wants him dead, etc.), so my thought was to leave off getting into Vegas until way later. I figure that way I can do all the sidequests and DLC first, then have all my reputation reset when I get to the Strip, create a backup save, then do one quest chain to the end, then reload and do the other. Seems pretty straightforward to me, but is there anything that could trip me up?

Nope! You could even nuke both the ncr and legion if you want. Just be aware that stepping inside the lucky 38 or pursuing benny in the tops will reset your reputation with the ncr and the legion when you leave either casino.

Hmm, so entering the Lucky 38 or Tops is the specific trigger? So I can say, visit the other Strip locations for all that juicy sidequest XP? Not that I'd be hurting for XP, really. There's tons of poo poo to do out there in the wasteland, and the DLCs give out XP like candy.

Coming out of the Lucky 38 resets your NCR rep, and dealing with Benny resets your legion rep. So you could break the bank in the Tops and do the talent scout quest in the Tops without a rep reset, just steer clear of the corner where Benny hangs out. You can even screw up Caeser's plan with the Omertas before the rep reset, and he'll call you out on it when you meet him.

Your NCR rep doesn't reset until you actually go talk to Ambassador Crocker. I know this because I was on some run where they kept popping up with friendly reminders that they were going to kill me soon (annoyingly I didn't even kill any NCR, just the mercenaries they hired to harass Jacobstown), and after I finally got around to chatting with him, it stopped instantly.

Slippery Tilde

I've been playing again after some time away from the game and forgot how painful Old World Blues is in terms of stability. It gets worse as you go further through the game. I'd remembered to not try fast traveling from the Sink balcony so I hadn't been doing that but now I get a crash to desktop at least 50% of the time when I try to fast travel anywhere. I wouldn't mind walking from place to place but of course that means dealing with the packs of enemies that repeatedly spawn out of nowhere.

Too bad because its otherwise such a fun place - I just want to get it over with because of the hassle.

Enough that you can't leave the game sitting open for ages without consequence, not enough that you actually notice it that much other than feeling a bit more tense.

HC mode is about where I'd expect normal difficulty of a game like this to be, it's not particularly difficult - or particularly "hard core".

My biggest gripe with New Vegas came at the end of my very first play through. I had run through all the mainline quests, and was going around trying to find all the locations. Looked at my map, though "Oh there's that huge expanse off to the west, I'll go look there next." Wait, nope, there's absolutely nothing. It seems like they wanted the map to be either square for aesthetics, or just to seem bigger than it actually is. All the locations (barring a few outliers) are on the spine of the map. There's so much wasted space that could have something cool in it. Compare this to 3, where the whole map is utilized (for better or for worse).

Does anyone have any interesting stories about faction assassins showing up? Craziest one for me was when Legion assassins spawned near Helios One while I was doing That Lucky Old Sun. They actually got inside and killed half the NCR stationed there.

That's absolutely hilarious and totally in character for the legion. I wonder if NCR does the same?

One time I got into a big scrap with some Legion assassins south of Novac, I took down three of four and the survivor got to fleeing. Turned out there was a big, tightly-packed group of wild Bighorners nearby, I forget if I dealt the coup de grace or they did but at any rate I cooked a lot of mutton afterwards.

Boone and I were hiding inside the quarry, trying to take on the mama and papa deathclaw when some more red dots appeared on my map. I panicked, thinking there was another herd of deathclaws headed to our position. However, the legion assassins showed up, prepared to fight. They attracted the attention of the deathclaws so a three-way brawl ensued, with the alpha deathclaw dismembering two of the legion dudes while the assassins accidentally berserked the mom by killing the babies. I'm still not sure how Boone and I made it out of there.

During testing, I went to sleep at The 188 and woke up to the sounds of gunfire. Legion assassins were attacking the NCR heavy troopers stationed there. Since almost everyone but the Forecaster and the brahmin are allied with the NCR troops, it became a battle royale. I actually had difficulty finding where the assassins were, so by the time I got up top, the last assassin had finished the last heavy trooper just before I put him down. The only survivors were the Forecaster and one brahmin.

The whole map IS used in New Vegas, but the map itself isn't that giant square. Rope kid said before that it's like putting a map of Colorado and a map of Nevada on square bits of paper of the same size: Nevada is bigger than Colorado but will look smaller because it isn't square so it can't fill out the map like Colorado can.

The Mojave Wasteland is "taller" (more tiles top to bottom) and narrower than the Capital Wasteland, but has about the same number of tiles overall. In retrospect, we should have created an irregular map border (as we did with Zion Valley), but I honestly did not expect people would have this much Trouble With Maps.

Before Dead Money even came out, I was genuinely convinced that the western area (past the hills and invisible walls) was going to be used in DLC at some point. There was something behind those hills, I just knew it.

Both the Mojave Wasteland and the Capital Wasteland are surrounded by 4-8 times as much terrain as their respective "game" volumes. The terrain is textured but not populated and exists purely for LoD rendering in the distance.

I wonder how involved the design process is for populating all the JUNK that goes into rooms. Even the junk-filled trash-heap rooms seem to have a method to their madness. Since a lot of trash actually has a use (even if it is in later DLC releases, like Tin Cans being used for grenades and Martinis) I wonder how much planning went into the precice combination of junk.

So I've run into a pretty infuriating bug at the Silver Rush. After entering it for the first time and having my weapons taken away any attempt to leave it crashes the game, I've tested it with coc and it's only when leaving via the front door that this will happen. If I were to guess I would say that one of the DLC or mod weapons I'm carrying is causing problems when the game tries to return them to my inventory.

My next nearest save is before a bunch of exploring that I'd hate to lose and my quick/auto saves are inside the silver rush itself, I really don't want to lose these weapons either because there's some of my favourites in there like Knock Knock.

Is anyone aware of a way to fix this bug? I tried googling a bit but between the event bug and the store inventory bug there's too many unrelated links to sort through.

So I'm at the end of Lonesome road, and have run into a bit of a snag. I've been trying to get Ulysses to surrender without having to resort to the level 100 speech check, but here's the problem: he keeps lecturing me on how my support of the NCR will all be for naught, even though I actually am playing an independent Vegas runthrough. I have to pass a (reputation?) check that will convince him to see things from my perspective, but it fails. My reputation with the NCR is currently [idolized], but that's a given for every other faction aside from the Legion.

So my question is this: does my reputation with the major factions have to be at a certain point for Ulysses to consider me working toward an independent Vegas, or is it something else I'm missing?

It's who you have the highest reputation with. For House it's the Strip and for Independent I think it's Freeside? No idea what could be causing your problem though; first time I played I was idolised with everyone, second time I made the Legion hate me and killed House; both times I could talk him down. Are you getting to the bit where you say "your recordings prove you've learned the wrong lessons" or whatever it is? Because if you pick the wrong options after that you'll have to fight him.
