Man, I love the original games, but the controls are pretty clunky. From the tiny dialogue window, to the three item scrolling inventory, to intuitive things like cycling through weapon modes. I booted up Fallout 2 recently, after a long, long, long absence, and I was fumbling around with the UI myself for part of the Temple of Trials. It all came back pretty quick though.

I still like to daydream that Obsidian successfully pitches an old isometric style Fallout game to Bethesda, on the Pillars graphics engine, and they just brand it as Fallout Tactics 2 (even though it's really just like Fallout 1/2).

Or, alternately, Obsidian does a off-brand Fallout game the way Pillars is off-brand Baldur's Gate. Doesn't need to be post-appoc, necessarily, I'd consider Arcanum a Fallout 'style' rpg.

The basics are just point and click, but without reading the manual you won't know how to do even basic things like get through your inventory, equip weapons and use items, or do any of that efficiently in combat. Fallout 3 and New Vegas making the switch to an FPS means the controls are a lot simpler and easy to do in-game tutorials for, and New Vegas proves that you can still have an incredibly detailed RPG on the same level without needing to be a clunky isometric thing from the 90s.

A Fallout 5 with Avellone contributing would be better than nothing, I'd probably even buy it. His New Vegas DLCs made it clear he's more at home in the Bethesda-style irradiated wasteland full of monsters than the Obsidian-style campaign setting full of ideological conflicts.

I wouldn't get too overexcited about MCA being involved. After his main contributions to Pillars of Eternity were eventually dropped/not used he left Obsidian so FO: New Vegas 2/ FO: New New Orleans isn't going to be any closer.

There will never be another Obsidian Fallout or New Vegas 2, as far as I can tell. Avellone dropped some strong hints toward that after leaving. If he's doing something Fallout related it's probably directly with Bethesda, or someone like Beamdog doing an "enhanced" version of 1/2, like they did with Baldurs Gate.

I suspect it was a minor miracle/freak occurrence that NV exists at all.

He even flat it said he'd love to work on Fallout again, but explicitly said NOT with Obsidian. We'll probably never know quite what the drama was with him leaving, but there clearly was some.

Considering the path Bethesda has gone with turning their games into a monetary service, another obsidian Fallout game is impossible to fathom unless creation club dies spectacularly. I just see CC as being incompatible with the design ethos of other developers, and Bethesda would probably be furious if obsidian made another fallout game that outdid their own efforts by relying on goodwill and non scummy business practices.

I am curious about the goings on at Obsidian, considering most of what we know about the company comes from the design leads and not the upper management. They're pretty much guns for hire as far as being a game company goes, and I respect that they haven't been tied down to a publisher. But at the same time I wonder if their mercenary attitude is what Avellone took issue with. I imagine negotiating contracts with big time players can get pretty cutthroat, and the development side of the company would get hit harder than management.

Fallout 1 and 2 are loving amazing RPGs but BOY OH BOY did they not age well in certain respects. poo poo, Fallout 1 doesn't even have a 'loot' all button, and you can only move items 999 increments. Which is fine for everything except for money and ammo. The interface is clunky and you may have to hunt around for some tweaks for high resolution stuff (IDK if the steam version comes with anything. The GOG version definitely doesn't), and I don't think either game likes windowed mod or Alt-tabs, mostly as a side effect of compatibility mode issues, I think.

That said, holy loving gently caress, they're amazing games. They're well written, funny, and compelling games, and they're fairly hard at times, but once you come to grips with SPECIAL, the engine and the interface, it won't seem so hard. I really recommend everyone play it.

Jinxed increases the chance you trigger a Critical Fail roll on a fail, I believe. Which means people start dropping guns and ammo like nobody's business around you (not to mention shoot their friends)

It's also worth remembering that if you max luck along with taking jinxed, it increases the likelihood that enemies will miss you, which is what triggers the crit fail check in the first place (similarly, Jinxed stops having as much of an effect on the player character once they've buffed their own skills to the point that they don't miss very often.)

People have really been going nuts lately whenever (popular game) gets ported to the Switch. The hype train shows no signs of stopping. If FNV did get on the Switch, it would sell.

I find it interesting that the Lanius speech check is so high, and yet it is clearly a very bad idea to let Lanius walk away and regroup. The Legion's continued existence is a threat, and the sooner it collapses the better.

They also make it pretty clear though that (as long as you took Caesar out of the picture...and even if you didn't, there's his brain cancer), Lanius has no leadership skills and the Legion will blow itself up shortly. It's basically doomed unless you specifically go out of your way to save Caesar's life.

Both Fallout 3 and F:NV eventually sold about 12 million units, each. For comparison, Skyrim has sold about 30 million to date and Fallout 4 sold in 12 million units to retailers in a day.
