The biggest problem with Reflektor is that all the songs go on for way too long. If you edited the album down to a tight 40, it might be good.

I was excited for Everything Now because it was a single LP, and I thought "thank God, they're cutting back again."

That didn't last.

I wasn't crazy about parts of Everything Now at first, but even the worst songs on the album have grown on me over the last few years. So, I think that Reflektor and Everything now are still solid albums, but I hope they return to form with their new album that I expect to be out within the year. They spent the last two albums chasing the high of Sprawl II and trying to make dance records.

a bunch of one-offs too that aren't ambient or soundscape work like "Tonya Harding", "Love Yourself", "With My Whole Heart", etc.

I'm aware of his discography. I was talking about his main records, not his collaborations, b-sides, random singles, side projects, or EPs. He's put out A LOT of work. But before September, he has only put out 2 main records since 2005.

At this point though we're quibbling over semantics. Sufjan's work is vast and prolific.

Most of those aren't side projects. I don't know what you're counting, but he's released more than three solo albums by far. I could include all the side projects, which are long and I'm not about to argue about Sufjan Stevens.

He gave up on the state project, why count Illinois out of all records as his last tent-pole release?

So I want to preface this with saying that I love Sufjan, and I legit enjoy talking about this, and I apologize if this comes off as arguing. I could talk about Sufjan all day.

I'm not saying that Illinois is his last tent pole release. I'm saying that since Illinois, there have only been 2 tent-pole releases, Age of Adz and Carrie and Lowell. I think you just misread what I was saying.

The Avalanche is b-sides to Illinois. All Delight People is an EP, although it might as well be considered an LP given its length. The BQE was a commissioned project that he only did a handful of performances for in New York if I remember correctly, alongside that neat video project.

I don't consider these tent pole releases because Sufjan doesn't consider them tent pole releases. This isn't me assigning some arbitrary label to them. The only major tours he's done for solo work since Illinois have been to promote Age of Adz and Carrie & Lowell. Edit, I just remembered that he did that short tour for his Christmas stuff back in 2012.

I love The BQE and All Delight People. But I'll direct any new fan to his tent-pole releases first before the deeper cuts.

I actually came here just now to discuss just this. Where are all the fun new rock bands these days? I know that rock as a genre isn't really being highlighted by the mainstream anymore these days, and the ones that are heralded by places like pitchfork and NPR are just kind of, sad sounding, despite how good they are.

I've loved a lot of new stuff that has come out this year (mainly the new Perfume Genius), but is there anybody new doing something like what Broken Social Scene was doing last decade? Just music that is unapologetically rock, that still makes you want to dance. I've been criticized by other friends for my music tastes being stuck in 2007.

I've been on a BIG Arcade Fire kick this last week

Arcade Fire is one of my favorite bands. I agree that Reflektor and Everything Now aren't necessarily their best work, but both albums are still above and beyond better than what most musicians put out. Both albums could probably lose a track or two and be better for it (Flashbulb Eyes, looking at you), but they both have some really killer tracks on it.

They give phenomenal live performances, and every single time they exude so much energy. I've seen them like 7 or 8 times, and I've never seen them phone it in. Last time I saw them they entered the stage by going through the crowd with a marching band. At one point Win got off the stage and laid on the ground right in front of me and sang an entire song. Regine came down and danced right in front of me for another song.

And to top it off, they're nice people and great towards their fans. They often sell tickets for after shows with all proceeds going to their Haiti charity, and they will actually engage with the fans.

They deserve all of their success and I'm happy for them.

It's also looking like they are working on a new album. I kind hope they go back to more traditional rock and less disco.

It's definitely a dense album that is going to take a few listens to really fully digest, but I felt the same way about Age of Adz which is my favorite album.

There are definitely some absolutely stellar standout tracks like "Make Me an Offer I Can't Refuse," "Ativan," and "The Ascension." It's interesting that the singles he released leading up to the album aren't even the best on the album, but I guess that's one way not to let people don't.

I will say though that limiting the number of instruments to just a synth and drum machine has resulted in some of the songs sounding kind of same-y.

Edit: Adding "I wanna die happy" to the list of standout tracks
Edit: And "Landslide". Or, "LAAAAAAAAAAAANDSLIIIIIIIIIIIIIDE"

It's going to be hard for me to really let go of Big Orchestral Sufjan. I loved the balance he struck on Adz. He's obviously no stranger to minimalism, as some of his best songs are simple banjo-plucking things, but for a whole album it can be a little frustrating. Except Carrie & Lowell which obviously merited that approach because of the subject matter. In truth there are actually tons of layers here, but since they're almost all synth, it's a little hard to pick them out.

It's still early. We'll see.

I'm still praying that someday we'll see a studio recording of "Majesty Snowbird," probably his greatest unreleased track.
