Kramdar posted:WTF with Yeasayer calling it quits? I saw their post on Twitter earlier. Their last couple albums were very forgettable so I'm not too surprised. They probably slowly leaked crowd sizes down from a couple thousand at each show to a couple hundred and decided to throw in the towel. Or you know, can't stand each other anymore. I loved a couple of their albums though, rip until their new projects don't take off and they have a reunion in 5-10 years.

New Purity Ring is decent, not great. It sounds like b sides from the last album.. how do you take five years to make something so short and totally uninspired. The new Empress of is what I think is really great, give that a listen.. it has a lot to offer.

Weird, every time I've seen songs of live Chvrches they look like they don't do it too well live, I guess you have to be there.

The Modern Leper posted:To each their own, but I don't even know where you would've gotten this. NPR:The Band (especially around this time) would have been Animal Collective or Dirty Projectors, or more likely the third album by Fela Kuti's former kalimba player. Not even those... it's literally The Arcade Fire or Vampire Weekend. Thinking noise pop is the "NPR" of indie is laughable. The funniest indie ad ever is this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Mvm6KfJDE0

The Modern Leper posted:It's worth reading his statement (EDIT: Looks like it was the following year, after he contributed to another ad). I think he sent it to Stereogum--the link is dead, but there's an extended excerpt on avclub that's pretty choice. Yeah, I have no problem with him making money at all.. good. It's still just funny to me thinking "lets go to outback tonight" from the most popular of Montreal melody.

Everything Now was good in little bits for me, and songs were cool live when I finally saw them... but yeah they tried to hard to make another statement album and failed pretty bad.

I thought The Suburbs was their weakest album when it came out but after running to it a few times it became probably their best for me overall. They probably will never release anything amazing again tbh.

Just listen to psych rock stuff like Ty Segall, King Tuff, Black Lips, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard if you want more upbeat rock poo poo that's still coming out today.

That's pretty cool but tbh I'd rather send money to my favorite small independent venues who are getting absolutely crushed right now and likely could be for a year or even longer.

Twin Shadow released a new album to almost no media or fanfare on Friday. Probably because his last two albums were forgettable as heck. Does anyone still care about him? His debut album is top tier of the 2010s either way. Small Black has released two albums in the last four years as well and they do not get any attention. It's interesting what fades rapidly. Remember Memory Tapes? Do you guys have any other examples of these artist you've liked but just kind of disappear? Someone mentioned The Go! Team right? I never got into them beyond hearing some random singles but I remember them being around. T Bowl fucked around with this message at 03:21 on Jul 13, 2021 |

The Modern Leper posted:TV on the Radio and Mac Demarco are both absolutely still going concerns. I think we should distinguish between bands that are past their heyday big still "major label" active (Interpol, The Strokes, Modest Mouse, Death Cab) vs. bands that are basically in a "State Fair" phase of their career vs. bands that broke up/artists that went back to accounting/etc. Yeah, however you guys want to do it. I wasn't talking about bands who hit their peak and have waned slightly but still sell well for concert attendance, more of the bands that just totally seemed to have faded out. I think either discussion is fine though because talking about it is interesting. I keep hearing the "indie heyday" stuff too but what I think people don't realize when they act like Indie subgenre has faded is that it's not that clearly defined of a subgenre in general and has morphed into slightly different sounds that are rooted in rock music. A lot of the young artist in the alternative world now I would still lump in to the indie tag.

Yeah I've known for over a year that he left grizzly bear. He said it on some weird cooking podcast that isn't popular and basically said that he just wasn't into it anymore and wants to become a therapist. When I dug a little deeper too apparently when he was interviewed when they were touring Europe he was saying that the money returns just weren't good enough and they were almost breaking even with their tour to Europe with all the costs involved. I can't imagine that is actually the case maybe in Europe they weren't making huge profit but in the United States a four-piece band like them and the theaters they were able to sell out they would be making good money. He's also a person who comes from extreme wealth I guess so his own perspective is probably skewed a bit. So now the band is essentially defunct but there has never been any public announcement and the three other guys are all working on solo stuff. Bismack Billabongo posted:Would My Morning Jacket go in this thread? Their new song would be a great instrumental but the lyrics. Woof. I’m starting to understand why Wordless Chorus is their most popular song I think that's what's interesting about the lyrics of that song though... it starts all poetic and asks the listener to look for deeper meaning like a typical rock tune and then goes very literal and it's very much on purpose. Plenty of their tunes are the typical open to interpretation lyrics. Anyway I think it's pretty good and a new album is welcomed obviously. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CymKLVBbRAU
