I've had the Charge HR for a week and I've come to the conclusion that wrist-based HR sensors aren't ready for prime time. Using a Garmin chest-strap as a baseline, I've seen the Charge HR under-count my heart rate on runs by 20-40 bpm. It's especially noticeable with sudden changes in exertion level. My guess is that Fitbit's had to make compromises with the LED sensor (reduced light intensity for longer battery life but reduced accuracy?).

Abroad for a couple months and having left my Garmin Forerunner & Charge HR back in London, I figured I'd get a cheap Apple Nano to tide me over. I ended up getting a Sony B-Trainer which is an odd piece of kit. It's a wrap-around Bluetooth earpiece with built-in GPS, HRM (thru contact with the ear canal), gyro/compass based pedometer, and 16gb of storage for music. You can use it standalone or paired with Sony's smartphone app which is a typical fitness app. I've been pleasantly surprised by it. GPS lock-on is fuss-free and more surprisingly, the HRM function works a lot better than the Charge HR style of wrist-based HRM. Battery life isn't great but it'll do for anything up to a marathon. Oh and it looks bulky on stock photos but I don't find it cumbersome.

The Garmin 235 is much better for a running/biking + activity tracking esp with the optical HRM.

yup does notifications thru bluetooth with your phone. optical hrm is very much a ymmv tech but it seems to match up with my chest strap and definitely better than the fitbit charge hr ive had. cool thing is that if you have an existing chest strap you can have the 235 read from it so you get the best of both worlds. 24/7 optical hrm for stuff like rhr and chest strap for specific activities if you want to be 100% accurate.

Is there any watch or device smaller than an iPhone that plays Spotify?
