And I’m not exactly angry over having paid 20$ ten years ago for a Kickstarter that didn’t get finished.

The unfortunate reality is that most people wouldn't want to buy multiple copies of a game to fund development when there just isn't/wasn't a real market for them.

So getting people who are REALLY into those genres to throw upwards of 5-25 or even 100 times the cost of a copy with reward bonuses really was the way to go.

49$ for a game like that may still be standard on console, but that is pretty wild on the PC market.

My last backer rewards for Psychonauts 2 just shipped: a lapel pin and a boxed copy of the game. It's kind of incredible how long they took to ship them out and that they still did after all this time. The game was pretty good anyway, so I'm glad I backed it regardless.

I backed late and they hit funded plus 1 stretch goal. Kinda a bummer since I'm certain it will do well after the fact if it's even close to Jimmy. That was a good game.

The Trese Brothers have an update on their KS game!

quote:

Cyber Knights and Alpha Backer, we have big news! The New Boston Zone is online once again and the first builds of Alpha V2 have been downloaded from Steam and are in the hands of the Alpha Backers!

The Alpha has been shuttered for almost 10 months, since the end of 2022 to allow for massive updates to the game across the board, including the huge UX Redesign project we started last September. 2022. With the Alpha V2 builds we shipped this week, we are rolling out the new launch-ready UX as well as thousands of changes and updates based on your feedback from the Alpha V1.

Even if you never tried the Alpha or you played the early Alpha builds to bits, we hope you will come back to the streets of New Boston and see what good things all your feedback and suggestions have created! If you have a chance to check out last year's mockups (update) and compare it to the build’s gameplay you’ll see that we landed pretty close to the target.

What a journey!

The very first Alpha build of Cyber Knights: Flashpoint went out to our Alpha Backers in January 2022. It was both scary and exciting to get to share the beginnings of the game with you. We talked to a number of backers who were surprised at just how early they had been let into the development cycle.

But the patience and hard work, we think, has paid off. Updates throughout the entire calendar year of 2022 gave us a chance to prove the game systems, level designs and technology we were using. We had some growing pains, for example the long process to switch from Microsoft’s App Center to Valve’s Steam for playtesting. Our backers stuck with us through it all -- encouraging us, supporting us, giving us feedback (both good and bad) about the state of the game.

We’ve spent all of 2023 preparing for this day. In February, we staged a major refresh of the roadmap, tasks list and burndown for the project to ensure we had a clear vision of what was left to do. At the time, it sounded a bit impossible but over the weeks and months we’ve ground that checklist down until we reached this tipping point.

Now, we need your input more than ever. This build is very close to what we will ship on Steam as our Early Access launch. We have 18 or so days until the launch and we’re going to be working nonstop to try to convert your feedback into better balance, features and fixes.

:allears: I love seeing a game I backed shaping into a real thing. I should probably actually try the alpha since I paid for a higher tier to access it, but... :effort:

Either way! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tresebrothers/cyber-knights/description

Coming to steam soon! :toot:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_TcRcIY8a4

They've done an engine swap to UE5, and are now looking for a publisher apparently. The update doesn't paint a great picture of the development process, though. It sounds like they've lost a lot of team members, and I wonder if they're searching for a publisher now because they need the money to continue.

You're not wrong, but they've been making games this whole time, which is a bit of a different thing. (They were the Skylanders devs, for instance.) It's conceivable that this particular game will suck, but it's not like they spent the last couple of decades working on accounting software and are trying to get back into the industry now or anything like that.

Star Control has always been these guys' biggest passion. I remember posts on the TFB blog years ago that openly discussed how they were regularly pitching a new Star Control to Activision and kept getting turned down. During their lawsuit against Stardock (during the whole SC Origins kerfuffle), they insisted that they intended to make a new Star Control the moment they were free from Activision. So I suspected Toys for Bob was going to make this game after they became independent earlier this year, but TFB buddied up with Microsoft and I guess the founders bailed to found a new small independent studio instead.

There's a lot of reason to be skeptical of original devs returning out of nowhere to do a new thing. In this case though, the project is helmed by a management team that has managed a successful medium-sized studio for 30 years. Nothing is a sure thing in the world of kickstarter but this seems like a safer bet than a lot of other projects run by devs who have either no prior experience or some experience in development but not management.

edit: Also for the confused, Ford and Reiche settled with Stardock and managed to maintain control of the setting (the "Free Stars" setting) while Stardock was mostly left with just the name "Star Control." So that's why this isn't called "Star Control 3" or whatever, but it is still in that same setting.

edit 2: I guess they actually left TFB a few years ago which makes a lot more sense given how far along the project is.
