Where I used to live, the AutoX we would get 8-10 runs in a day. Unfortunately, they haven't been able to get a venue for the last 2 years and I moved a little ways away.

I went to an AutoX over in Bremerton and only got 3 runs in in the morning and signed up for Time Only in the afternoon. Drove a long ways for a little over 5 minutes of seat time.

Been doing track days and I am hooked. Way more seat time and I am learning leaps and bounds more about car control.

Anyone ever try this method of swapping pads without swapping rotors? I'm lazy enough that carrying the drat rotors around and removing the caliper brackets makes it too much of a hassle for me. But if I can just swap the track pads on a few days before, then remove them a few days after, it'd be perfect.

And no, I don't care about brake dust on the wheels.

Martin at Girodisc recommended something similar to this for me when I talked to him. His was a bit briefer though:

"drive to and from the track on the track pads and it should grind the existing transfer layer off going both ways."

Also, on the tire pressure debate... Tire manufacturer's have tire pressure recommendations for "hot" temperatures. I played around with tire pressures on my car for a few track days but have settled on a typical pressure that feels good for me and lands in the tire manufacturer spec (where I expect it to anyway) after getting up to temperature on track.

Looks like they got the environmental permit approved to build the track over there though. Would be nice to have 5 available tracks in the northwest (6 if you count Mission in BC). I keep looking and asking around about tires that will survive on track and have >=200UTQG treadwear. So far, I just keep getting "blah is great for AutoX! Get those!" while neglecting that "blah" greases up like bacon when they get some track heat in them.

Currently, I am asking Tire Rack if they have the 255/35/18 RS-3 in the new 200UTQG. Next option may be to call up Summit Racing and see if they have the new 255/35/18 NT05 size (came out 1/1/2014).

The only intermediate solution before full cage that I am comfortable with is: roll bar, 6-pt, seats made for 6-pt and a neck restraint.

I haven't decided if I want to leave the stock 3-pt seat belts in for driving on the street yet.

Even the Schroth ASM solution doesn't seem to solve the issue of the belt riding up when the shoulder belts are tightened. I would imagine, you would want to keep the shoulder part moderately loose.

So I am looking at my Sparco 6-pt harness sub-straps. They came from Sparco with the snap-on pre-wrapped with a D-ring. However, the way they came from Sparco does not match up with what Sparco or Schroth show as the proper way to wrap a D-ring around a snap-on connector.

The D-ring is too small to fit the harness through it 4 times to match the way shown in the instructions... Is the way Sparco wrapped it from the factory incorrect? I can't imagine they would wrap it from the factory incorrectly and provide a D-ring that is not possible to wrap it correctly. But, if so, I need to find some larger D-rings to wrap it per the instructions.

They drove it around for a day but considering they are so packed that getting the car put on the lift is like asking for Jesus to give you a hand job they probably just said "no odd noises among all the loud noises the car normally makes."

I only noticed it because after driving 160 miles back from the shop I noticed oil splatter on the back of my bumper/trunk.

Also, I should note that the transmission fluid is not leaking from the drain/fill plugs which was the first area I checked.

I should also note, my car sat out in the weather so the APR GTC-300 wing looks like a big pile of poo poo after sitting in the weather for 3 months. The clear coat on the entire top side of the wing is hosed. The shop ended up fixing it. Turns out somebody, somewhere forgot to tighten down a plug on top of the transmission that does not appear to be for anything in particular. I don't know if this was the transmission shop's whoopsy or if that is where the shop tried filling the transmission from when I asked them to overfill and to fill from the reverse switch on top of the tranny. Be wary of any designs that are not sold in either Japan or Germany or another country that does mandatory wheel certification. Certification doesn't necessarily mean the wheel will survive loads of track time, but it will certify that the design is sound at least, and shouldn't be an immediate death trap.

People seem to really like the Apex wheels, lots of folks track them in the bmw cca clubs on r comps with no issues that I've seen. Not legal for spec class club racing (wider than stock wheel size) unlimited guys seem to go with something lighter/more exotic in their classes, but the other guys in the HPDE's don't seem to have any issues.

Apex wheels only go up to 10.5" wide and aren't custom offset.

3-piece wheels provide a lot of options for offsets. There are lots of 3-piece wheel manufacturers. Most expensive/nice being forgestar.

CCW Corsair series seems to quite popular with people who track their car.

I would like an 18x11.5 or 18x12 wheel with an offset in the +32-34 range that is affordable enough to buy multiple sets without going into the poor house. They also need to be strong enough to not murder whoever is driving the car on track.

I'd think tires will bankrupt you faster than the wheels at that size also, not to mention selection is going to be extremely limited.

315/320 wide with up to 680 diameter is the goal and what the front fenders have been cut to.

I was looking at those a while back. They look pretty nice and would fit 275s on the low side. I could fit an 11" wheel on the stock body with a high offset.

The AutoX guys are running 315s for SCCA SM class. I figure the additional mechanical grip would translate well to "technical" tracks. Also, if I just plug the same formula as everyone else (275/35/18), how can I expect to do anything but lag the cars with more years of development using the standard formula?

The Vorschlag Mustang got a good bit faster (couple seconds on a almost 2 minute track) when they bumped up from their 315 to 335 (or was it 345...).

I just have a hard time imagining a slower lap time from a wider tire where the drawback is additional rotational mass (less of an impact for power:weight classing).

Also, there a poo poo load of discontinued tires in the 305-320 range. The ones in the 275-295 range get snatched up very quickly.

CAN is an easy way to pile information into a DAQ.

Racecar needs 5 data points+ per corner:
Rotor temp
(3+) tire temps (inside, middle, outside)
Shock pots and/or load cells

There are more you can add (brake pressure for ABS systems). Not many DAQs support more than 10 Analog Inputs unless you want to run multiple DAQs. It is also a lot of wiring.

The only thing that needs a high sampling rate (100Hz+) is the shock pot.

There's some thought that for swapping street to track pads and back they should be similar. The track pads will tend to scrub off all the street pad material and then deposit their own layer on the rotors, but the street pads will not be able to do the same. So if the street pad is some completely different kind of compound you can wind up with noisy brakes that don't grab very well. So for example- using the ds2500s on the street and then ds3000s or 1.11s on the track. And as far as Ferodos go, the 1.11 are newer and a better choice for the 3000s on the track, if available.

Driving on the track pads cold will also scrape the track pad transfer layer off. So, drive on them on your way home and then swap back to regular pads.
