I don't think I've ever cleared a run out of pure, unadulterated spite before today. I decided to try the Lord of the Flies challenge again, what with having horrible luck with it every time I've tried, and the game did its damnedest to see me fail. The highlights:
If it weren't for snagging the Dead Cat in a misguided attempt to unlock the Hairball (after getting screwed by the aforementioned stingy blood banks), the run would've ended me five times over, at least three of which by Conquest alone. ...and after all that? The game had the balls of giving me a Devil Room after Mom's Heart. That might've been the first time I ever flipped off a laptop.

I was in the stage to fight Mom, but I got a telepill that brought me to the I Am Error room, so I skipped that fight entirely, and did the womb for the first time. Beat her heart easily as the bombs would take out what she spawned instantly. So now I've gotten Mom's broken heart on the title screen, and only one Mom kill. But I unlocked Judas and a lot of other stuff. "Mom Kills" only keep track of how many times you cleared The Womb, so only having one is typical, regardless of skipping Mom through I Am Error. Personally, I'd suggest replaying the Dr. Fetus challenge 4 more times; you unlock Dr. Fetus in the normal game after your 5th Mom Kill, so you actually can't get it outside of the challenge yet and it is really good. Not Epic Fetus good, but still good enough to make the challenge run not very challenging at all.

Protocol7 posted:I haven't seen it myself as I have no idea how to get it. Are people decompiling it? Yeah, people both here and on GameFAQs are decompiling the flash processes, and the wiki seems to disavow both groups. Because drawing info about the game straight out of the game code is obviously a faulty method of data-gathering compared to confirmation bias and anecdotal evidence. This would be why you might see folks talking down about said wiki. Irony Be My Shield posted:Why do some items need a chance to not be in the game at all? I can see why you'd want to mix around the Mom range items for variety, and have the spoon and belt as essentially 2 versions of the same item, but I really don't see the point in having a 50% chance to not have Fate or Pyro in the game. If I were to wager a guess, people likely used Fate and Pyro as the biggest examples of "the new items need to be reweighted", as they were pretty much guarunteed to show up in any given run when WotL first came out, leading Florian to think that those items in particular spawned too much, as opposed to the Expansion-focused weighting making them appear way more often than they were supposed to. Not that them being rarer is that worrisome - Pyro is just the bomb equivalent of the Skeleton Key and Dollar (I'd rather have either Fetus, as an example) and Fate is just another Flight item, granting an Eternal Heart instead of any damage boosts or the like. Bellmaker posted:-Arcades will only spawn when you start a floor with 5+ coins. You're gonna need these, Blood Bags and Skatole will do wonders for your survivability. Well. Luck plays a part in the arcades altogether; I've gone several runs having 30+ coins and only ever getting a single arcade to spawn either on Depths 2 or Womb 2 because of bad floor setups; I'm pretty sure the arcade is the last room to be placed. Likewise, Blood machines seem to enjoy taking 20+ hearts from me before coughing up their goodies, which is great for the pocket book but bad for survivability. I only ever seem to actually win Skatole when I'm playing as Cain, for that matter. Is there any good instinct I should hone for when to Just Say No to blood machines/curse rooms/devil beggars? I always seem convinced that if I just try a little harder, luck will actually be on my side.

I really wanted to fill out all the achievements before I stopped playing as much, but at this point I'm actually feeling burned out after so many attempts. Mama's Boy (the Womb) is mostly a matter of practice; if you have a stockpile of bombs, I'd advise bombing through rooms in order to clear a path to the boss room. Naturally, Compass/Treasure Map help with this. For Dark Boy (the Depths)... it's pretty much luck; in addition to absolute DICKISH room setups in the Depths, there's also the slightly-unreliable Mom explosion which can literally snatch defeat from the jaws of victory at the last possible second. Really, the only advice I can give is to attempt it when you've got a Curse of the Labyrinth going, as the cheevo triggers when you kill Mom. Do note that We Have To Go Deeper and the I Am Error room are acceptable ways of skipping the first floor, but using them on the second floor to skip the boss invalidates you for the cheevo. You have to kill the Depths/Womb 2 boss in order to trigger it. Maha posted:Alright, now a devil beggar just dropped The Poop for me. Pretty sure it's time to revise the pastebin. I kind of had this same bug before. Basically, if the boss spawns EXACTLY where the trapdoor would, he ... doesn't spawn. To clarify, The Habit and the BoR/Nail will make you invulnerable up until the Womb; the Wafer is needed to make you basically invulnerable in the Womb and beyond. The Book of Revelations is a really common, really good item whose only drawback is giving you way too many horsemen to fight.
