Except they weren't. The RivaTNT and TNT2 were knocking on the door and beating the Voodoo in some aspects. I remember showing up to my first LAN party with a TNT2 and blowing away everyone who was still using Voodoo cards.

Here's a fun blast from the past:
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nvidia,87.html

The TNT didn’t come out until mid 98. The 1st and 2nd gen 3DFX cards started in 96, and for the first year of the TNT it was only good on paper because the drivers were terrible. Who cares how nice a game looks if it crashes every 10 minutes?

TNTs didn’t overtake voodoo in quality until 99 with the TNT2, which is the start of that 3rd generation. Until then 3DFX wasn’t just marketing, they were pretty much the only cards worth using during the 1st and 2nd gen of 3D accelerated graphics cards.

Voodoo cut corners and did things that were worse quality but improved framerates. I don't care to die on this hill, I was glad that 3dfx got beat by nVidia. I only wished I had invested in them like I should have when they had their IPO :sigh:

Now with less breakage.

I swapped back to my voodoo 3 from a GeForce 2 MX just because the latter was incredibly crashy - though of course that blame may have been equally on the via chipset. (I eventually put a Kyro 2 in that machine and it worked reasonably well, for what that's worth.)

And, yeah I know. I didn't have a lot of money for hardware.

I was just so happy, after getting a Voodoo, that I could play better looking games than Doom on my pos pentium 2 machine. Everquest ran like poo poo, but it ran, and I got playing MMOs out of my system early so I never had to repeat that mistake again.

Just do the audio equivalent of stenography at first, and then hook up your ham to your home network as if it's a switch that has all the hams you can connect to plugged into it or whatever

Obviously once you get a critical mass of them all in on hamcrimes the normal isps can be done away with, this is both technically and socially extremely plausible and the ham area network will be fine

lol yeah I drive a 2003 minivan I got for a thousand bucks and have never had a car newer than that so I still think of that as, current tech

I have this thing, and it'll also play mp3s off of microsd- it hides in my center console thing what has a lighter adapter in it, and it's like having it built-in- hit FM preset 5, wait for a plummy british robot voice to say 'waiting for pairing.... paired!', play musics and podcasts:

not rly obsolete given that like half of cars out there seem to be older than bluetooth (or even aux in) becoming standard, but I guess they're going away slowly?

cassette adapters, tho- I remember five years ago, replacing my ancient tape deck adapter with a new one; I was floored that I had to go to three big box stores to find one, and Wal-Mart only had the cheapest brand possible

Seriously. For thread content, I'm fond of his videos on the 1963 Chrysler Turbine and the 1922 Stanley Steamer. A couple of alternative car designs that made plenty of sense at the time, but which didn't catch on (because the times changed and they stopped making sense).

That guy is what's called a rover. There are ham radio contests (yes, it's a thing) where hams try to make contacts with different countries or different areas. This guy is is all likelihood activating different Maidenhead grid squares for a VHF and up contest (50 mhz and up) contest transmitting in multiple squares, often times in areas where there may not be many hams or many people. During these contests hams get 'points' for making contacts with as many grids and/or other hams, and those that collect the most points often times get plaques or certificates proving you are the most ham.

"Television" is a misnomer, the one time I saw some crusty ham radio guy doing it, it was very akin to the experience of downloading an ancient porn GIF at dialup speed. But it would be entirely possible to goatse hams on the other side of the globe.

Konstantin posted:

Data via ham radio is still governed by archaic symbol rate rules. Anything on HF (30 mhz or below) has a maximum rate of 300 baud, VHF (30-300mhz) is 1200 baud, and UHF (300-3000mhz) is 9600 baud. The more data you send, the more bandwith it takes, which is at a premium, especially in the HF bands. Hams have lots of bandwidth in various chunks above UHF, including exclusive portions of 2.4 and 5.8ghz, just below and into the unlicensed wifi bands, which hams have been using for enhanced uses like broadband hamnet and AREDN. Hams have had a class A block of ip addresses since 1981 (44.x.x.x). The group that controls the block sold off a chunk of it to Amazon last year, but they still hold 75% of the block that can be assigned to hams.
