Colostomy Bag posted:In short: All car companies have smart engineers. But bean counters and bad management usually ruin it all. British Leyland is the perfect example of that. The end product was awful due to cost cutting, poor quality control and sOcIaLiSt unions but the engineering and design was good. My favorite story is when they had a car that would not fit through a bridge between sheet metal work into paint so they just pushed them onto a trailer and drove them around to the other building... in the rain... during winter when the roads were salted.

I thought the Impala did everything the LaCrosse did, better, and for less. I had a 2014 Buick Regal GS before it and liked it a lot. Also a 2013 Chevy Volt that didn't survive an offroad mountain adventure, that I liked a lot. The only thing they make right now that I like is the Corvette and Camaro, and neither are compatible with my current lifestyle. Pre-Covid the Impala was my go-to rental on the National Executive aisle.

In terrible car news, ‘Fieros Forever’ Museum Walloped by Dam Break quote:As if we didn’t have enough to worry about. Earlier this week, the middle of Michigan’s lower peninsula received a torrential amount of rain, breaking two dams, flooding the cities of Midland, Sanford and others. The recovery—especially since a third of the state’s workforce is unemployed due to the pandemic—will be difficult and long. Michigan’s National Guard is helping the displaced.

In the second video they pull apart another factory one and it's a lot better, they said certainly good enough to slot right into a car. The rotary machinist guy says the 13b ones tolerance wise are pretty decent but the Renesis ones are trash.

Only have 100k miles on it, had to do some body work underneath to reverse 19 years of new england road salt but it still just runs like a champ. It was relegated from daily driver to occasional "tow a trailer to and from the lumberyard / home depot" once a month duties so I expect it to just last forever at this point. At some point there will be expensive 4wd related repairs but nothings making noises yet.

A couple of years ago I picked up a project DeLorean from the US. At some point in it's life it went from being cared for with all the usual upgrades of the era, to belonging to someone with some misplaced 2fast2furious tendencies. Other than the cut shocks, knockoff momo wheel and *~racing pedals~* they also... painted the headlights blue? I thought I had a good handle on (lovely) car culture but I've never seen this before and I don't get it. Is it a thing? He also painted the license plate lights blue too...

Not sure if I misunderstood something, or even if I didn't who pulled a fast one here. It looked convincingly stapled shut like it was factory sealed but the way the vapor barrier bag was sealed up wasn't the same on the two. The second one sure looked factory sealed still, the first looked like it had been opened at least once. IIRC there were different brackets and stuff (for instance the lifting bracket) on each. I think someone took the first one out and ran it but I'm not sure of that of course. The rust water I don't find very concerning TBH, that's just because they ran plain water during break-in instead of coolant. The small amounts of orange rust mud would wash out fast and get drained with the first coolant change. The out of spec end play and metal already in the drat oil? Bleh, do better Mazda.

I saw in the comments that the engine was discontinued for awhile. How old is that engine, it doesn't necessarily say anything about newer stuff, right?
