I saw The Watkins Family Hour the other day and they were really good. It was just Sara and Sean, but I don't think anything was lacking. I always forget how good a guitarist Sean is and wonder why he's not as prolific as Sara and Chris Thile have been since Nickel Creek split up. His voice sounds the same as it did 20 years ago, too. And of course Sara is just as charming a band leader and phenomenal a fiddle player as ever.

Where or Who?

Is you love that period then check out George Straight, Tracey Lawrence, Clink Black, Alan Jackson, Brooks and Dunn, John Michael Montgomery, Sammy Kershaw, Mark Chestnut as far as men. For women try Patty Loveless, Pam Tillis, and Tricia Yearwood.

Sturgill Simpson and Chris Stapleton give nods to that sound here and there.
American Aquarium's latest album is 90s covers.
Josh Turner's Country State of Mind is covers of mostly 80s and 90s songs.

Tyler Childers and (a bit less so) Jason Isbell also do material that falls into that vein.

If you haven't listened to Sturgill's Metamodern Sounds album you should probably make that a priority.

A lot of red dirt artists do fairly straight forward country/rock sounds that might be what you're looking for. You've got like 15 or 20 years of music too some was actually made pretty close to your preferred era.

Anyone who has any ability to see Dylan on this tour should do it. He’s so into playing this material and his new band does it super well. He’s doing something really special. I don’t know how many more chances there will be after this tour.

There are two threads with "folk" in the title but I thought I'd try here first since the most recent post mentions Dylan... I've been slowly iterating through folk and folk-adjacent music over the last few years (after getting started via Stan Rogers) and I'm hoping I might get some more recommendations for similar stuff. Here's what I listen to a lot:

  • Stan Rogers
  • Archie Fisher
  • Steeleye Span
  • Fairport Convention
  • Albion Band
  • Pentangle

David Francey is good too, since you seem to like Canadian/Scottish people

E: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiUFxtfU950

Martin Simpson is good too. Andy Irvine and Paul Brady are great, a little more irish trad than folk, but real good. There are several albums of the Transatlantic Sessions that I really enjoy and have been a great exposure to new artists. You might like Ewan McLennan, he's a little more 'angry guy with a guitar at the folk club' though.

Not that we need yet another reason to love St. Isbell, but:

https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/elaminabdelmahmoud/jason-isbell-ryman-country-music-mickey-guyton

He did an 8-night residency at The Ryman and on pretty much every night he hand-picked a bunch of black artists to open for him. It’s always nice to see when someone is more than just talk. There’s some cool artists mentioned in that article I’d not heard of.

Also, Adia Victoria has a podcast, Call And Response, where she interviews a bunch of great people, Isbell included. Am really enjoying it.

He has a significant axe to grind against both Isbell and Sturgill Simpson. His articles about them usually come across like extremely nitpicky forum posts by posters who are "definitely not mad". Bringing up the same stories to try and make them look bad while ignoring the greater context of whatever it is they said that definitely didn't make him mad.

I also had to install a browser add on specifically to block his comment section. Just the worst.

I was wondering if this would get posted here, he definitely has a weird fixation on Isbell but also seems bizarrely defensive of Morgan Wallen too, this was only a few days ago https://www.savingcountrymusic.com/grand-ole-opry-unfairly-attacked-after-morgan-wallen-appearance/

I mean look at that opening line! "When Morgan Wallen was caught using the N-word in a playful moment with a friend on a Ring doorbell camera on January 31st, 2021,"

Without having read the article yet, I think the way Isbell can get people riled up is pretty funny. A couple years back he tweeted something to the effect of “if you’re arguing about what is and what isn’t an assault rifle, you’re not helping.” Someone replied “but what if I have a tiny penis?” and Jason said “learn to play guitar.”

His twitter game is on point and he's got a set of balls on him, that's for sure. I totally respect that he doesn't care who he pisses off or what it costs him. He's not a total rear end in a top hat about it either. He and that "200 or 200 feral hogs" guy just laugh about it now.

lol drink every time he make a broad statement, and then goes "....But"

"But it’s another to regularly engage in severe judgement of others while overlooking one’s own iniquities and refusing to offer forgiveness in a way that can only be characterized as illiberal hypocrisy veering towards outright bigotry."

*proceeds to do just that and ramble on for 189 paragraphs*

EDIT: And can we all admit that Isbell isn't country. He certainly isn't in a "pop country" sense and not in a classic one either. . I think by this point, Americana is it's own thing.

i hope he follows through on quitting the road and spending time with his family. i honestly think it's ok for an artist to just bust out a few phenomenal albums, get themselves set for life financially and then drop out. this thing where ppl have to spend their lives slaving to stay on top is hosed up and has ruined the lives of a lot of people.
