This is a cool thread. I too enjoy retro games, here is a photo of my meagre collection.

That's from a few years ago since then I've added a Mega Drive with Action 52 . The SNES with the UFO has a 50/60 hertz switch and the region check disabled, but otherwise nothing is modded.
I also had a Master System and a massive collection of games gifted to me, but on my last visit back to Australia the guy who gave it to me asked for it back. He gave it to me on the condition that I used it and so I can't blame him him for wanting it back as I've been living in Japan for the last 3 years. But I also gave him a few titles I had picked up myself and I'm kicking myself about that. The Master System is my favourite console and I'll be happy to do a bit of a write up, though I don't know everything about it.

More recently this thread has me been toying with idea of picking up a PC Engine even though I don't have a TV at my place. The local game shops PC Engine Duo R's for about ¥15,000 and PC Engine CoreGrafx II's for ¥22,000, does this seem about right? I also found a Laser Active with both the PC Engine and MD pacs for ¥26,000.

$30 from a guy I met when I was in Uni. Not the best condition, but I really like the game.

The carts are mainly PAL region, same with the systems. It was cool when I finally installed the switch and got to see exactly how much the picture is squashed at 50 hertz.

I can't recall exactly why I got NHL '96, something to do with testing the while modding the SNES. Never actually played the game though.

That Rakuten deal comes at such a lovely time for me. I'm currently saving up for a trip to :japan: Japan :japan: next March so it wouldn't make sense to splurge a rather sizable chunk of my travel budget when I could spend that same money for a similar deal on site. Then again it might save up in shipping if I have to send multiple packages back home... :retrogames: I'm seriously considering just rationalizing it in the "well I'm going to spend that money over there anyway" kind of thinking.

Speaking of which, my travel route goes by Osaka-Kyoto-Tokyo, week on each locale, meaning I have well enough time to scour for retro goodies. Are there any "must hit" places in Osaka or Kyoto? I hear there's a similar district to Akihabara in Osaka and Kyoto most likely has its share of retro gaming stores.

edit: actually, it seems Europe is poo poo out of luck for free shipping (or even 4000 yen off shipping). There's no mention of eligibility outside of China, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, USA, Canada and Australia.

There's a great game bar in Kyoto called Cafe La Siesta.

It's a small place with a great atmosphere. They have a Famicom hooked up to a TV shaped like a giant Game Boy + a ton of games a disk system. There's also have a few other consoles and a Street Fighter II cabinet. The consoles are free to play, but SFII cab is only free on Thursdays.

It's a brightly lit place, the atmosphere is pretty chill and the staff are friendly. It's a great place to play some games and enjoy a beer.

They're also involved with the local Chip-tune scene. A few of the staff are DJs, they sell CDs of local and international acts and have info about related events.

All this talk of Saturns has got me excited. It's the one console I've never played with, but after looking up it's capabilities and library I'm very interested in it. (Near?) arcade perfect ports of fighters, yes please. Plus, I'm starting at a better paying job so :retrogames: isn't out of the question.

Just a few questions I'd like some help with if possible.
The local game store have Saturns for ~4600¥ which seems comparable to Rakuten prices, will I find better?
I have modded a PAL SNES with a 50/60Hz switch and for region protection in the past with out hassle. A Saturn shouldn't be as taxing, right?
Also is 20,000¥ a good deal on a Virtua Stick Pro? How often do these things come up?

Finally, I'm in the market for a TV (Currently just running my PS3 through a PC monitor) any suggestion for a ~32 flat screen. I figure an XRGB of some sort will be next on my purchase list.

Edit for clarity: I'm living in Japan

I was posting last week about buying a Saturn. Well...

Also picked up Dynamite Deka, Puyopuyo Sun, Astal, Mr Bones and Samurai Spirits Best Collection. Mr Bones is a trip. Just wait for my action replay to arrive so I can start having fun with Samurai Spirits.

I paid less then ¥10,000 for the system, games and the monitor + new battery and TNC adapter for video input. I'm pretty happy. The Virtua Stick Pro was ¥20,000, but the 2p joystick's right input doesn't work. I'm not too happy about that. I haven't opened it up to have a look yet, but it should be an easy fix. I just wonder if any of the other inputs have issues.

So it turns out my model 2 Saturn has a 64pin chip. I got my mod-chip from racket boy, but the guide on that site for 64pin is a bit too complex for my tastes.

I found this one : http://www.segastyle.com/model264.html

I'm in Japan next month and will do this. Any more suggestions?

If you go on Thursday the SSFII cab is free to play.

I'm based in Nagoya so I can tell you about there. The place to go is an area called Osu(大須), specifically a street called Akamon dori. You'll find two main shops here specialising in retro games. Meikoya has a good selection of software and hardware. Its where I found my Saturn Virtually Stick Pro and currently has bunch of interesting peripherals for master system and mega drive. Also has a bunch of sample and prototype Famicom carts too. I can get more info on these if anyone's interested.

I can't recall the name of the other place, but there's a sign out the front offering Famicom repairs. This is the place for hardware and is where I grabbed my Saturn. I can't remember prices off the top of my head, but the twin Famicoms go for less then what was listed up the page and come with the belt replaced. I've also seen original Famicoms modded for AV. The place is super cramped and not especially fun to browse though(this is actually a lie). One thing to note is that when you make purchase you receive a ticket that you can use then and there for a 10% discount or save it for a 30% discount next time you come.

There's also a Mandrake nearby which has a complete Jaguar CD setup that no one seems keen to touch.

All that said Nagoya is out of the way and not full of awesome tourist attractions. The shops here don't have an amazing selections and I'm still trying to find 'paneru de pon' in a store. But there are still good finds to be made at decent prices.

If anyone comes through Nagoya, give a yell and show you what's about.

Just joined the XRGB-mini club. Loving having the Saturn running on a screen bigger than a few inches. Now I just need to upgrade from a monitor to a TV. Now I can see what Mr. Bones is actually doing.

While I was at it, I picked up an official Nintendo RBG cable for the Super Famicom I was gifted. Only problem is that the XRGB only outputs a black screen when I connect it that way. A bit of research tells me that the caps in old Nintendo cables are very prone to leaking, does this sound like what is happening here? I'm all keen to make this my next repair project, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to open the darn thing and I can't seem to find a guide on how to do it either (Outside of this cool kid telling me I'll need 3 6.3V220μF caps).

Thanks for confirming that. This link http://hkjunk0.web.fc2.com/games/etc/rgb/rgb.html (Scroll down past the Saturn cable section and you'll find the SFC cable.) shows that the caps are in the 21pin connector, but I have no idea how to open it up. Ever have one of those days where you can't believe what you find?

I was unhappy about not being able to find a Saturn multi-tap while in Tokyo on the weekend and was thinking there would be no way I find one in my area. But having a bit of time before needing to head to work I thought I'd have a look anyway. I was shocked by all the new stock they'd got in, mainly Sega 8-bit and 16-bit machines and accessories, when I noticed this...

Never thought I'd see one of these outside of a 'Top Greatest Console Failures' list. Decided to skip it.

I did pick up 'Super Adventure Island 2' and a game I'd been searching around for for a long time, 'Snowboard Kids 2.' Here they are with some other recent purchases.

I picked up 'Panel de Pon' from Super Potato in Tokyo on the weekend. Say what you will about the prices, but if you just want something they'll usually have it. I couldn't 'Harvest Moon' for ¥300 and DKC2 is a just a classic. I got 'Super Bonk 2' because I liked the first SNES release so much, but this one seems to have a slower pace. I got that strange looking last cart in bundle I picked up today...

The SFC wasn't included, so I think this is the first piece of useless hardware I've bought. It came with a cable (not the L-bracket) to output the Statellaview's power to the SFC, but no box, instructions, accessories or most(?) importantly power cable. I don't even know if it would be worth it trying to power it on?
What do I do with this?
Why did I buy it?

The Satellaview only cost 3000 yen at small sized retro shop in Osu, Nagoya. I looked up after checking through a box of cables and was shocked to see it. It was the first time in 5 years of looking at retro goods in Japan that I'd seen one. At that price I could resist, but I have no idea about what it could be used for apart from a display stand for the SFC.

The shop itself is pretty cool. Cramped and more than half the space is taken up by old DVDs and CDs. It has the best selection of games and hardware I have seen in Nagoya. The only signs I've seen for it just have Famicom written in katakana and information about how they offer a Famicom repair service. So even though Google maps make me believe its called Kハウス(K House), I'll always think of it as the Famicom shop.

I received a box in the mail from the USA today.

It may look average to most, but SNES pads with cords longer than a foot are hot commodity in Japan. I never realised US pads had concave X and Y buttons. Also, I haven't found a copy of Golden Eye for less than ¥5500 (about $55 and that's cart only!)

The Blu-ray was a nice surprise and it looks like I've been given an excuse to buy a Super Game Boy too!

Thanks go to Miyamoto. I'm glad we both came out happy.

The thing with Golden Eye got me thinking about the differences in retro markets between different countries. Everyone knows Mother 2 is a steal in Japan compared to USA but so is another SNES favourite, Harvest Moon. Also there are two CIB copies of Evo sitting in the Mandaraka near my house going for less than $60.

I know its down to release schedules and production runs. But it still shocks me to see games I thought were reasonable cheap so expensive here while those mythic beasts of western collections are comparatively cheap. Funny thing is the Perfect Dark goes for about $10 less than GE. I hate to think how much a copy of Conker's would be...

I can't believe you didn't know about the concave X and Y buttons; that's the only reason I prefer the American SNES controllers. Especially when Y is the run button; you are going to be so accustomed to it that you'll curse its absence on all other controllers.

Also one of the controllers simply has the Nintendo logo rather than the SNES logo; this controller is NOT a bootleg. It was the one that came with the SNES Mini.

Anyway, glad you enjoyed. Sorry I couldn't throw in any American food. I was going to throw in some authentic Vermont maple syrup but I think it's a federal offense these days punishable from a $500 fine to death by lethal injection/electric chair (depending on state).

Oz has the same style pads as Japan, just wired up differently(!?) So my mind has been blown. I guess they had to make up for the drab colours some how...

The reviews for the :airquote: portable version :airquote: of 007 make it sound really interesting, so I'm keen to have go.
