Well, from a meta standpoint, it's just hard to be bothered by that when she's so drat likable. Over-the-top characters like that are always just so much fun. Actually, it's sort of that way in-universe kinda? I mean, it's not something that would ever make sense in the real world, but in terms of the surreal internal logic of Dangan Ronpa it makes total sense. Syo was in her own weird way extremely personable. In fact, she was kind of a little bit easier to get on with than Fukawa. Fukawa was always quick to judge other people shallowly and harshly and kind of distanced herself from other people and was always in a bad mood. Meanwhile, Syo is clearly having the time of her life no matter what's going on. And I don't think Syo cared much about anyone who wasn't Togami either, but she never pushed anyone away immediately like Fukawa did.

In conclusion, Genocider Syo is a genocider bro.

I know that she's one of the ones under suspicion, but I really think we can eliminate Pekoyama as a suspect for a meta reason: There's no way they're going to specifically request a voice actress as famous as Kotono Mitsuishi just to kill off her character in the very beginning of the game by execution.

Yeah, fair enough. As several people have pointed out, it could go either way.

To be honest, I just don't want Pekoyama to be the killer cause I think she's cool and would like to know more about her.

I really dislike the over-use of the word despair when it makes much more sense to use another word. Not sure if this is the game or the translation (Assuming it's the game) but it doesn't read very well and I feel you'd get the sense despair is being caused if the word wasn't forced into every sentence.

It's kinda... both-ish? It's both a problem with being too direct in translation and Japanese just not having as many words as English to describe emotion. I'm like 100% sure that it's just a direct translation of "zetsubou", which is a word those familiar with anime/otaku media have probably heard an awful lot.

Agreed that it could stand to be used a little less, though. "Despair-inducing" is just kind of a really awkward construction that comes straight from translating from Japanese way too directly.

The mystery was never really the important part of the game to me, to be honest. I was always much more interested in the character development.

I mean, granted, part of that is because I'm poo poo at figuring out mysteries. But honestly, the compelling part to me was the motivation for the murders and how the survivors reacted to them.

Honestly with the exception of the Slayers and Kino's Journey novels (which also didn't read like Light novels to me...) I've found most Light/Japanese novels with anime or manga ties to be somewhat shockingly formulaic in one regard: 80-90% of the time, the plot is structured around an unassuming male character who either meets, or has known/been friends with a particularly eccentric, unique female character who will *always* possess a strange outlook and/or behaviorism, or worse, just a gimmick. They then have an adventure or a conflict. The male character tends to have a one-note quality to an otherwise bland characterization, or they did something interesting in the past and or have something way out of left field happen to them during the plot.

Shakugan no Shana, the Fortune Quest novel, Zaregoto, *the Book-Girl series*, Kara no Kyoukai, Spice and Wolf (quasi counting this one, since at least the hero had a drat *job*) and I imagine many more.

I like how you list the "Unassuming male character meets eccentric female character with a strange outlook" genre of light novel and then don't include Haruhi Suzumiya in the list. Of course, those light novels are actually well-executed, so...

Can we lay to rest the "Nagito is Naegi" theory though? Like for serious?

It was literally just the devs trying to make a character similar to Naegi, but there's no reason for him ACTUALLY to be Naegi. It is a lovely plot twist and a terrible idea.

Since for once I don't think anyone's posted a theory like this, this is my current theory for how the murder went down.

Hanamura discovers the entrance to the floorboards while either looking for the missing skewer or while gathering supplies in the storeroom. He immediately realizes he can use this to go under the floor and look up. Because Hanamura. He takes one of the spare tableclothes so he's not spotted between the gaps, and brings the skewer in case he encounters rats under the boards or something.
Hanamura notices something glowing while he's under the boards and heads over to where the knife is during the blackout.
Hanamura then sees a huge something blotting out the table above him and two glowing green eyes. Hanamura freaks out and stabs the monster above him repeatedly with the missing skewer and runs back to the storeroom, shoving the tablecloth into the nearest hamper. He then discovers he stabbed Togami to death.

Wow, that's actually... really depressing. I don't think it's going to happen, though. Watch as this turns out to be the thing that does happen, I'm poo poo with predictions.

At this point, it looks like the prevailing theory about the culprit is going to be completely correct. Despite all of that conflicting evidence, it turns out that the first trial still looks to be fairly easy after all. Especially if we're going to suspend the trial to look for more evidence.

Honestly, it's kind of a shame. Hopefully we'll get some more interesting trials down the line.

I wouldn't necessarily say that I trust this LP's translation more than any other - I did end up reading another fan translation and finishing the story after all - but I definitely wouldn't want to see this one end. I definitely can appreciate this interpretation and more than that, given that the LP of the first game is why it was localized in the first place, it just feels plain wrong to stop it before it's finished. I'm glad they're finally being brought over to the West, but I think all of us will always have a soft spot for "Super High School Level", 'right?

What I'm saying is that the official localization of the Twilight Syndrome game-over screen is going to be inferior and it's not really going to be NISA's fault.

Unfortunately, it just occurred to me that I may also be making a valid argument for discontinuing the LP, which really was not my intention, because I'd like to see it go on. :(

There's interviews with some members of the NISA localization team around online somewhere where they said they purposely avoided looking at the Let's Play at all. I mean, take that with a grain of salt because of how publicity works and things like that, but if true it could mean they come up with the same thing entirely independently.
