VVVVVV Official Website VVVVVV is a first-rate indie platformer made in a Commodore 64 style. It was released in early 2010 by Terry Cavanagh (website), a guy known for a bunch of other indie games including his latest, Super Hexagon. The first challenge of VVVVVV is pronouncing it. Say "the letter V six times," say "Vee," say "Vee-Six," or if you want (my personal preference), just make a loud "vuv" sound lasting at least 6 seconds. That should do it. Anyway, once you've got that down, the second challenge is a speedrun to go get the flat-out amazing soundtrack, PPPPPP, by Magnus "Souleye" Pålsson. You can preview it on Bandcamp right here. I am linking PPPPPP again here in case you missed it because it is that good. Of course, the main challenge of the game is the platforming. It's a really thorough exploration of a one-button mechanic: rather than jump, the protagonist flips his gravity, walking along ceilings, floors, and tiny, tiny platforms as needed to make progress. The level design adds elements that combine with the flipping mechanic to keep things difficult and interesting without changing the core gameplay. Deaths are common, but checkpoints are all over the place. On the one hand, this means you don't need to worry about losing a lot of hard-earned progress to deaths. On the other, the frequent checkpoints give the levels a chance to present surprises and strong challenges back-to-back. Even though some parts of the game may make you want to claw your eyes out as a result, like that one shiny trinket, you always feel like you're just one step away from a breakthrough. That's the kind of hard game I love. What you can expect from this LP I'll show off all the levels and trinkets as well as other little secrets as best I can. This will involve a little backtracking, but I'll keep it tight. I may also show some choice player-created levels. If I've missed a big secret or something you really like by the time we clear the game, let me know! There are also some notorious challenges in this game, including a certain part with a timer that I am terrible at. I'll record the best runs I can of those segments. If you can do better, then by all means show off, but please don't show them until the LP gets there. Let's go! The Diode room at the end is kind of mean, to ensure that you can't try and play the level backwards from the exit teleporter. But then, most of the areas have something similar in them (with one exception... ) I've been sick recently but as soon as my voice becomes listenable again the next update will happen.

Paul.Power, that exception, so to speak, is definitely getting covered, as well as another thing you'll probably enjoy. The bonus videos should be pretty fun! Maybe Oysterman could have some funny "conditions" for his refight? I'm assuming there will be refights eventually, and I always thought vanilla refights in the MM games were a little tedious. One of the MM2 romhacks (Deus ex Machina?) had changes to the refight boss rooms that forced you to use different tactics, and I thought that was great.

I only cut out three deaths, actually. It had just gone on long enough already. I also got asked whether it was okay with me for people to submit speedruns and other expert stuff of their own. I'd love to see that, but I think they'd be better for after this main playthrough is over. I'll be trying to do some of them myself too afterwards! Yes, actually. They just take away the spikes and rename the screen to Imagine Spikes Here, If You Like. In no-death mode (which is a very fiendish thing), it's the same change and is renamed I Can't Believe You Got This Far. The exit through Exhaust Chute also just kills you in that time trial, in case you were wondering. Actually, I changed my mind a bit. If anyone wants to show off stuff from the space station levels, go for it! There are cool tricks to see. Just leave the Laboratory alone for now if you would.

The latest: Final: Dectilon's Legend Run An excellent guy by the name of Locomalito (website) has made a number of free standalone games in an old-school arcade style. They're generally really fun to play, but they're also built to "80's gaming standards" of difficulty. In other words, tricky, challenging, and generally quarter-gobbling if you were to play on an arcade cabinet. You might remember when Dectilon (and much later, myself with his help) took on his excellent shoot-'em-up, Hydorah. Well, Maldita Castilla is Locomalito's tribute to a different genre: ye olde medieval side-scroller. Think Ghosts'n Goblins with some tweaks. Dectilon asked me to play through this one blind with him like I did with Hydorah. He actually ran the idea of the LP by Locomalito, who gave us the thumbs up to show it off here. Expect a healthy dose of editing around deaths in later videos, because like the games he's making an homage to, the game gets pretty cruel! Round 1 - the competent leading the blind to BAD END Chapter 1: Tolomera del Rey Chapter 2: Road of the Harpies Chapter 3: The Alcazar Chapter 4: Swamp of Malaventura Chapter 5: Cursed Forest Round 2: To the final level and MEDIOCRE END Chapters 1-5: All Tears, Full Run (about 56 minutes) Chapters 1-5: All Tears, "Highlights" (condensed to about 32 minutes) Chapter 6: The Realm of Pain Round 3: GOOD END by GOOD PLAYER Final: Dectilon's Legend Run Also of interest(?): Let's Race Maldita Castilla, with Dectilon, Phiggle, RobotGoat and Some Strange Flea, from the Let's Race thread! unpronounceable posted:drat. How long did it take for you to get that? I can't count how many times I've gone through The Gravitron, but I still haven't managed a deathless run. I think the best I've done is 2 or 3 deaths. Thanks! I was stuck on 2 to 3 deaths for a long time. I practiced at small intervals for a couple of weeks, actually. It's just really hard. I wanted to learn it though, because all my best no-death runs have petered out rapidly there. HenryEx posted:Not gonna lie, i thought VVVVVV was pretty terible as a whole, but the Gravitron was the first (and only) legitimately fun thing in the game. It helps that it has like the single one really good BGM from the sound track accompanying it. I think this is a really polarizing point in the game, probably because it's so different from the rest. Other people have also said they love the Gravitron, but maybe me dying so many times on my first playthrough ever left a bad taste. I'm okay with it now at least. It's enjoyable but a major shift from the main levels. Terry Cavanagh's most recent game, Super Hexagon, would be great for people who love the Gravitron. I'll cover all the dialogue from the intermissions in a bonus update. In terms of strategy if you want a deathless run: I'm not really an expert, but the best thing for me was practicing the transitions between phases to learn something I could do consistently. A major hurdle was getting ready for the 30-second mark, when the blocks start to come from both sides. It definitely helped when I worked on getting into the middle of the screen by the time they start coming. Also, bear in mind that the space between blocks expands a bit with each death. I eventually thought it was better to start over after a lot of deaths so I didn't learn something for later phases that wouldn't work with the smallest spacing.

Maldita Castilla is back! We have a few loose ends to tie up. Dectilon wasn't satisfied with me landing the BAD END, so he helped me find all the tears and get to the main event: the final level. That video will come in the next day or so. In the meantime, this trek through the first 5 levels comes in two flavors. Chapters 1-5: All Tears, Full Run (about 56 minutes) And if you don't have the patience for that one, here's another version: Chapters 1-5: All Tears, "Highlights" (condensed to about 32 minutes)

It's about time we made our way to the ending. You heard these and they are great: Predestined Fate | Positive Force | Popular Potpourri I really like the design of the final level of VVVVVV, especially the visuals, despite the fact that it leans a little toward needing foreknowledge of certain rooms to pass through them without cheap deaths. I think you could expect more deaths on your first several times than you might see here. Anyway, enjoy the ending, and I'll be back with bonus footage, tricks, and maybe some user levels!

In our previous playthroughs of Maldita Castilla, Don Ramiro was first destroyed by demons after not even getting into the Realm of Pain. The next time, Death extracted his soul in exchange for the stack of continues I needed. Well, it's time for our last run, and since Dectilon is at the controls, he'll do a whole lot better. Get ready to see the best ending, plus a tactical breakdown and evisceration of this game's challenges. Final: Dectilon's Legend Run A couple of times, we reference a race we did of the game, with RobotGoat and Some Strange Flea. You can find that here, from the Let's Race thread here. If you want to see an even faster demolition of the game, you should have a look! It's impressive, especially considering how hard this game can be. There is also another race of the game in that thread that was especially funny, and here it is directly because why not. Thanks for watching, and definitely try the game out if you haven't yet!

I used SCFH and VirtualDub's capture mode. If you check out the OP of the Let's Race thread, there's a little tutorial under Guides on how to use them together. Dectilon used Open Broadcaster Software's local recording function, which won't be lossless but does at least pick up the game without lagging it. I was using windowed mode, if that helps.

It's been a while, but here's one last video to wrap up as many loose ends as I can! Cool tracks: Plenary | Pipe Dream Flip Mode inverts the game, which adds difficulty to the same puzzles by messing with your muscle memory and timing (and occasionally your ears). Analogue Mode is great for like 5 seconds. Vermilion turns out to be a very helpful first rescue, so we'll see where he pops up. But the main events are the sequence break and the reward for getting all 20 trinkets! Check it out. And one last extra for completion's sake (no commentary) - the dialogue from the intermissions for each crew member, since they can be pretty funny. >> THE LATEST << Wily 4: Final Farce What this game and LP are about A couple of years ago, Dectilon introduced me and the Mega Man threads to Minus Infinity, a romhack of Rockman 4 by PureSabe and (now?) some other hackers that defies description. It's especially hard in the beginning, as you take on fully modified and expansive stages with minibosses, colossal enemies, and practically the entire cast of Mega Man and Rockman World mooks. It gets easier once you start picking up the wholly modified boss weapons and possibly secret items (see the table below), but it's a stretch to call the game anything other than hard - invincibility time is lowered and levels are designed with surprising traps and gimmicks. "I watched the old stuff (or didn't) and don't want to sit through all of it to get started. Just give me the gist of it." At the time we first recorded it, the game was in beta - the fortress stages hadn't been finalized yet, so we weren't able to make videos for certain levels. Well, the 0.01 version is here, complete through to the ending. I'll be taking the controls starting at the first new stage, Cossack 4. Feel free to watch the highlight reel below to get a feel for the game. Our playthroughs from before of the mostly-intact beta stages are also linked, most of which feature Dectilon's super skills. (Watch my run of Cossack 3 at your own peril.) (note: will probably convince you to watch the rest/get the game) THE ARSENAL The weapons and powerups in this game are ridiculous. They get demonstrated a lot, since the buster is probably the weakest weapon in the game, but for the sake of completion: [IMG]http://lpix.org/1197012/rockbustericon.png][/IMG] THE TUNES This game has a diverse and expanded soundtrack. But Dectilon played Cossack 2 Actually the Shock Guard you get reduces you to 1 bar of health on spikes. I found out about it when I was doing a bonus video for after the beta playthrough. In case anyone was wondering how far you can take the vehicles in MI Wily 1: You can get in with everything but the turret, including the jetski. There's one low overhang that gives the jumper a lot of trouble, but since it can jump off the water once before sinking and ejecting Mega Man, you can get around it.

If nothing else, being able to hit both buttons at the same time to skip back to the buster is really convenient.
