e- Meant to post this before, but congrats/good luck to those who just soloed or are about to. Little different with that extra room to your right, isn't it?

I've flown glass a handful of times in a DA40. That stuff (plus an autopilot, really) is mindblowing compared to the six-pack.

How realistic is it to get into the pilot career path? I'm 23 and working an IT job which I find extremely unfulfilling and I've been looking at moving out of the industry. I've always had a healthy interest in planes since a young age but never really considered the options for being a pilot assuming that you're either flying fighter jets or commercial airlines, neither which options seemed interesting or attainable.

What's the progression? Is it paying out for your PPL then Commercial rating and hoping you can land a job somewhere? As I said, I'm 23 with plenty of disposable income, I have no commitments and I'm more than willing to travel around the world for work.

I'm aware that this is something that you'd have to commit a lot of time and money towards, this is just an exploratory question as I'm considering my career options

ProFootballGuy is in a similar situation as you seem to be.

Typical progression is Private, Instrument, Commercial (Private on steroids with new maneuvers), Multi, which will probably take 250-300 hours. Then it's CFI/CFII/MEI followed by building lots of time before you hit the FAA's magic number of 1500 hours to have a shot at an airline job. If you're near a community college with an aviation program, consider an Associate's in an aviation-related program, because they'll shave 250 hours off the required time.

My suggestion would be take a discovery flight or two and see what you think. If you get your PPL, it can be a hobby at worst. In terms of schools, don't be afraid to ask around/read reviews online as to the quality of instructors, program, and airplanes. There's no sense in pouring lots of money into a program where they have two 172s and the DME readout on one is unreadable. (Or, in a more extreme case, the radio stack falls out of the panel on takeoff, as happened to a friend.)

So, if I'm reading this right, PSA can now fly CRJ-900s/E175s, but at the same/similar pay rate as to what their pilots are flying the CRJ and handful of CR7s they have now? US/AA's way of doing what DL is with their RJs in shuffling the deck to park the 50-seaters in favor of 90-seaters?

Curious about this as an outsider because, had I gone the flying route (which is highly unlikely at this point), PSA was going to be a target of mine.

One of my former instructors and her husband live on a piece of land in the country converted into a grass strip, complete with gun range and off-road buggy (they call them go-karts) track made from plowing down some of the tall grass. The house sits next door to a hangar designed to resemble those found in WWII, which stores their vintage plane and has a maintenance shop on the first floor and bar/aviation geek heaven mancave upstairs.

They have an annual fly-in for the husband's birthday which, when I went last year, didn't involve any sort of flying contest, but the guy flying the RC plane and dogfighting with a crow more than made up for it. More people should experience a battery-operated airplane taking on ACM with a bird.

The government wants the FAA to allow people to use electronic devices at all phases of flight, with Claire McCaskill threatening legislation to make it happen if the FAA doesn't do it themselves. They're aware of incidents where devices have caused interference, but write them off as "just anecdotes".

I would ask if the government is moronic enough to ignore NASA forms talking about HSIs getting screwy at 9,000, only to fix themselves once somebody turned off their toy...but then again, this is the government that set in the 1,500 hour law and just screwed 800,000 employees in a party line pissing match over the budget, so I wouldn't put it past some congressman/woman who got butthurt over having to stop playing Angry Birds to do so. The DA40 sucks if you're short. I'm 5'4" and had to have a cushion made to push me far enough forward to where I could fly the plane comfortably. And do you know how hard it is to find such a cushion?

I've done most of my recent flying in a 172SP and have to borrow the cushion which hangs in the instructor room and is up for grabs to go build time. That one doubles as a flotation device, complete with the "put your arms through the straps and hug the cushion to your chest" feature.

In the case of the Diamond, which was at another FBO, I needed something thicker than the aforementioned one and wanted something I could just leave in the car. Mine ended up at least 3-4" thick. I never thought to pillage my own kitchen. :downs:

Also, if your teacher grades you massively unfairly on something, they refuse to do anything about it. And right now I've had 3 group projects with 2 worthless students although that's not mutually exclusive to ERAU in any way.

That's interesting. All of my tests have been either on Blackboard (Multiple choice questions are either graded immediately or graded and returned, with the correct answer shown, essays may or may not get feedback) or a take-home Word file (slightly longer wait to hear back, but usually corrected). There have been a couple instances where there was something goofy in the test, whether it was an error in the question, no correct answer option provided, or a question which was scored as wrong but, in fact, the right answer. Typically, if somebody addressed it, they either threw it out or gave everybody credit for it.

Group projects are terrible. We had three or four people in a group for a blog, two of which proceeding to just stop showing up for class for some reason.

I agree with yours. Basic understanding of pilotage/dead reckoning (knowing what the chart means/situational awareness) and how to work the radio would be useful.

If you're talking about things to know in the event of an emergency, I'd add in a basic understanding of how to fly the plane, which could amount to "the yoke turns us and makes us go up and down, pedals are NOT the throttle and brake, and engine power is controlled by the black knob sticking out of the firewall".

My AME said you have to do something about it (surgery to correct and/or get a mouthpiece/CPAP) AND get checked out by a certified sleep

No, it's more of a comfort thing. There are four contacts attached to your legs (4 of literally 20 more) for the overnight portion of the study, two on each leg. If you wear long pants to bed (I wore sweatpants my first time), the contacts drag on your pant legs every time you move. It was an added pain in the rear end when it was already hard enough to sleep as it was. Wore shorts the next time and it was all good.

Guys might want to consider shaving/trimming their legs before they go, because the contacts come off in the morning, and having those things yanked is not the most fun way to start your day.

Despite that, and after having a heart-to-heart with my favorite CFI (who I knew would tell it like it was and, to my amazement, said "To be honest, I don't blame you" to rethinking a commercial flying career), hung up the headset. It's a disappointing relief and few people know, but it was time and I can live with it.

So, I decided to make flying a hobby instead of something I'll pursue as a career. I just have to get to the point where I can enjoy flying for fun again. :smith: (I do have a two-year old cousin who has been talking about planes since he could talk and whose mom has made an association in him between myself and flying. I hope to take him up when he gets a bit older. :unsmith:)

On the other side of the coin, I knocked out three Master's classes and started on my Capstone, and I'm still having too much fun doing papers on aviation geekery. I deliberately sandbagged a couple terms so I could register with a professor who is loving awesome, is willing to give two middle fingers to the school's establishment when needed, and is making life amazingly easy in writing this beast. Took that class with another student who works for an major aviation company in the region in their ops department who's willing to help me look for a job with them and recommend me. :hellyeah:

American's employees realized that the "new" American body didn't look right with the classic "AA" tail, so they voted to keep the current livery.

Delta's last DC-9 flight is January 6th. It'll be the last DC-9 (classic anyway, since the MD-80 and -90 are officially DC-9s) flight by a major US airline after 49 years.

An Endeavor CRJ-200 operating YYZ-JFK skidded off the pavement at JFK this morning. Sounds like they were clearing the runway onto a taxiway and hit a patch of ice. 35 on board, nobody was hurt. One woman who was asleep during landing was actually unaware of what happened until the crew came on the PA to explain what happened.

JFK? New York? Regional aircraft? Overreaction from Chuck Schumer in 3...2...1...

We have a guy in the area who is a little touchy about distractions, and is famous for yelling at a pilot that asked about the score during the 2007 SuperBowl:

"United six twenty two, UNABLE BEARS SCORE."

How, in the pre-smart phone world anyway, do/did controllers keep an eye on the scores? I remember being on a Delta flight from ATL-CMH as a kid in the late '90s hearing score updates of whatever bowl Ohio State was in over the PA.

Dumb question from a non-pilot. Since when does civilian traffic fly into military airfields at all? Unless it was a dual-use airfield like MAS Yuma, or Fort Huachuca, I've never heard of civilian pilots using military fields. I though a civilian plane flying into say.. Luke AFB or Nellis AFB was a good way to get met by nice dudes with M-16's, and no way in hell would the tower actually give clearance to land (except an emergency).

From the "civilian with a military base nearby" POV, I trained in Dayton, OH out of DAY and MGY. It was emphasized, much like if you watched Rocko's Modern Life and saw the driving school episode with "Don't get the fat guy!", that you don't ever even loving think of busting Wright-Patterson's airspace ever. You could get away with it if you were on with Dayton Approach (if coming from the South, ask for touch and gos on or an ILS to 24L at DAY for a great view of the USAF Museum and the WPAFB flight line), but there are some areas off to the East of the Dayton Metro where you could be in Class E and bust WPAFB's Delta errantly.

Some EAS markets are in danger of losing EAS status because flights are being cancelled. Because they can't find pilots to fly there. Because of the ATP Law and the fact that, when pilots hit the magic number and have the choice of a CRJ, ERJ, or Beech 1900... :downsbravo:

quote:

The airlines serving small markets in Nebraska and Iowa have had a hard time finding enough pilots since new rules took effect last year, so numerous flights have been canceled.

The canceled flights create hassles for passengers, and could make it harder for small airports to qualify for federal subsidies. Airports must serve at least 10,000 passengers a year to qualify for the subsidies.

QX.

They're hiring like crazy right now, and there are people in my class from Piedmont, ExJet and Frontier, so they have no problems hiring people from other regionals. Since QX is owned by Alaska and has abilities most regionals don't (CAT III, RNP .1, etc...), there's not the constant threat of "we'll find someone to do it cheaper" that's present at many other regionals, and everyone I've met so far seems to really enjoy working here.

The upgrade time is pretty long (about 12 years right now), but QX is losing pilots to the majors and age 65 rule at a pretty good clip, so that's expected to come down a bit.

Holy poo poo. And I thought PSA's upgrade time (5 years) sounded bad. What's an average upgrade time at this point?

Seeing a lot of talk on Facebook from friends at Eagle that the feeling at the MIA, ORD, NYC, and DFW bases is they'll be voting down the new agreement whenever a vote comes up. One of them says he's done if it passes because he can't afford another pay cut.

When would they be looking at a vote?

On anti-anxiety/depressants, 10mg once daily. How much would this screw with my chances of making the ATC cut?

Also, any gauge on typical desirability for facilities in Ohio? I've got some family business interests in Eastern OH, so if I decided to go the ATC route and could get Columbus or Dayton, I'd have it made. :getin:
