That actually is tempting for a cheap commuter.

The Micra I rented in Ireland had the 3 cylinder and while it wasn't fast by any stretch it wasn't horrible. The 1.6 l looks like it has another 27 HP too. I think it weighs around 2100 lbs so that would actually have a similar power to weight to say an Impreza (148 HP and 3000 lbs)...

Dear diary, I got another erection today at work. SO embarrassing, but kinda hot. The CO asked me to fix up his dress uniform. I had stayed late at work to move his badges 1/8" to the left and pointed it out this morning. 1SG spanked me while the CO watched, once they caught it. Tomorrow I get to start all over again...

Flash it. They should sell tuners for it. I know those things get some pretty ridiculous/easy numbers from just a flash.

PS get that not hot hatch talk out of here.

Just put down a deposit on an '08 A3 Sportback, with the 2.0 T engine from the Golf GTI. My semi-petrolhead wife wanted an upgrade on her 1.6 bog standard Golf and it's her 30th coming up so I'm going to surprise her, after telling her a car with the spec she wants is not feasible at the moment. She thinks she's getting an iMac, but instead the helpful sales guy will deliver her new car on the Sunday morning of her birthday, and I will take her outside and (hopefully genuinely) surprise her. I'm excited because she deserves it, and it's an upgrade in every way on her Golf (even though it's the same generation/platform).

So I just bought my second GTI, a 2013 Wolfsburg Edition, and had the APR tune done on it already and am now looking into some exhaust options because the stock note is a bit too low for my taste but am a bit overwhelmed by the options. I've already looked into options from APR, Eurojet and SPM motors. Just wanted to know if any of you have some other suggestions worth looking into that aren't too over-the-top and just sound generally good.

(Test) Drove the Focus ST for the first time today; no Fiesta STs were on the lot. Unfortunately it was raining hard with heavy traffic due to accidents so I didn't get to stretch its legs any. Nice shifter feel and NVH; I dug the Recaros as well. Clutch is kind of binary and the turning radius when parking is as poor as I've heard. Going back to the noise and heavy clutch in the Saabaru felt like driving a truck.

Oh and token bitching about side impact standards and visibility; it'd be so easy to reverse over a puppy in the thing. Still, it'd be nice as a fun practical car. More city manners than the WRX.

Anyone have experience with a Cobb AccessPort on the Fiesta ST? I'm trying to wait around until more mods are available, but I've been hearing some good things about the Cobb, and I just received my tax refund money a couple days ago :heysexy:

For reference, I am just looking to upgrade to something like the Cobb and maybe an intake. I don't want anything that is going to void the warranty or hurt the daily availability of the car

That's one of my complaints about the Abarth. The dead pedal is so large that the side of my foot catches on it sometimes depressing the clutch. I have to wear boots for work so it took me while to get used to it.

The dead pedal on the previous DD and my Z are both tiny in comparison. The one on the Z is literally a 2x2in square piece of rubber bolted to the side of the car.

The small overlap crash test basically means no more dead pedal in any car ever again. The small overlap crash test is the biggest piece of poo poo test possible. Basically, car companies spent years making a super strong cage protected by deformable crumple zones and cars became pretty safe, so the IIHS decided, "hey, lets just run poo poo strait into that super strong cage" so now you're never allowed being comfortable in a car again.

No dead pedal. Just sidewall. It's less pronounced in my old Mini because the gearbox sits more centrally but I guess there's just so much more stuff jammed in as you get more and more modern.

I never thought I'd label a classic Mini as relatively spacious but here we are.

KakerMix posted:

The deadpedal is basically the back of the wheel-well. It blows but hopefully kart boots will be narrower than running shoes and give me enough sensitivity to know when I'm overlapping before I actually use the clutch.

My '99 Type R weekend warrior. It only has 47K kms on it and while I've taken it on interstate runs down to Melbourne, I prefer to run it through the mountains. It's not quite my old JDM EF9 SiR (bus hit it) but I rate it as a good hot hatch, especially for its time. The only mods it runs is a Mugen sump, JDM 16 inch wheels and Tein suspension plus a gutted intake box with ducting. I keep thinking I should tweak it more but I have more than enough fun with it. I really need to get it out on a track though as it's where it belongs.

Downside: I love the factory Recaros in it but drat it's hard to keep them in good condition

I just finished a ~400 mile trip to Santa Maria from Los Angeles and back this weekend in the Fiesta ST. 80% of it was highway at 75-80mph without really being light on throttle, and 20% driving around hilly country roads with fairly spirited driving. According to the trip computer I averaged 31.9mpg which I think is pretty decent considering I had my girlfriend, our luggage, and myself in the car. Plus the car has under 1,000 miles and I've read that people's mileage has been getting better as the car gets more broken in.

At one point I did try to see what would happen if I drove VERY conservatively without any boost on mostly flat terrain and I was seeing 42mpg for a 15 mile stretch before hitting a big mountain incline. Of course you can't use such a small distance/time as a good measurement, but the 1.6L Ecoboost has the potential to do quite well on gas if you're good with it.

I'm sure you probably already know, but if you hold down the on that button that brings up the avg mpg, it will reset it, giving you closer to a real time MPG.

I keep looking at an accessport. I'm not sure if I should just go for it, or wait 6 months when more aftermarket is available. Then again, if the Focus is any indication, Accessport is going to be the best for the money anyway

Cross posting from my project thread:

So, in the interest of getting a reliable daily driver, I had a few options. Was looking at the local auctions for something nice to go through and there were some deals I missed but there's always the chance of hidden damage and unexpected costs so I'm not too bummed about it. There was an 04 Mazda 3 w/ 130k km the other week with hail damage, looked really nice but people went nuts for it and it went for over $4500 before tax, for a 10 year old hail damaged car. Locally I've seen a few on Kijiji asking between 3k-5k for similar ones.

Started thinking of financing something newer than 2010 so I looked at a few used dealers but didn't find anything too great for the prices. Mazda 3's seemed to be the go-to as I was checking out 2 2010 ones but after financing they were north of $16k. That's within spitting distance of some cheaper new cars, and you get a warranty with anything new, so me and my fiance started looking at new. We settled on the Veloster as the compromise between sporty, practical, quirky, and affordable. After getting jerked around at one dealer where the sticker price of $19k balooned to over $27.8k for a grey automatic base(colour and trans we weren't too excited about but we were ok with), we went to a competing dealer and ended up with a blue 6mt fully loaded turbo for just under $27k w/ 0% financing. OTD price ended up around $31k (The pricing you US guys get just south of the border is unfair )

Larrymer posted:

How you go from looking at 3-5k cars to 31k is incredible.

It's a surprisingly slippery slope once you start looking at what just a little bit more will get you. Rather than being a linear progression it was more jumping around and trying to weigh out options, in the end it seemed more attractive to go for a more expensive longer term solution i.e. a new car (having the benefits of a warranty, low initial investment, low cost of borrowing, low maintenance costs, and satisfying a lot of wants) so that I could focus on working on and enjoying my project car rather than trying to improve upon and dealing with various small (or potentially larger) issues that would pop up on a cheap older car.

Unfortunately I don't have $12k-$15k cash on hand so a used 2010+ car would be financed, at that point the cost of borrowing is too high for my tastes and the benefit of just being newer and nicer, without a warranty and with a possibly sketchy history, isn't enough. The auctions are really hit and miss when it comes to deals (I've seen bids go higher on wrecks than a nice used example is worth, auto Honda's and Toyota's are what people usually go crazy high for) and you still gamble with how accurate you can estimate the cost and the time to repair it all. It just so happened I wasn't around to snag something I felt was a good deal this time around before we pulled the trigger on the Veloster.

The Veloster should be worry free for next good couple years, just gas and oil (and other wear items as their used up), pretty much serving the purpose of driving appliance without being just another boring econobox and making me want to take a nap behind the wheel every time I drive it (I'm looking at you Toyota Corolla & Camry). It was withing the budget that we set out, satisfying what we need from a non-project car and it's got all the fun stuff to keep us interested like a turbo, heated leather seats, keyless entry and pushbutton start, panoramic sunroof, etc. I really wanted the toyobaru but I knew I wouldn't be able to stop myself from modifying it and I'd run the risk of having two unreliable projects on my hands.

That's pretty much my story of the mental gymnastics involved with that huge shopping price range I was looking at.

So onto discussing the actual car. The turning radius is nice-n-tighttm, ride comfort is good especially on our crappy pothole littered roads, the little 1.6 turbo is quite peppy and almost no lag (probably thanks to the twin scroll setup) and in such a small car it's more than enough to make it feel fun, the seats are pretty comfy and the heating elements definitely do a good job, might take a while to get used to where all the buttons are as there are quite a few, the backup camera is really nice since the split rear window can be difficult to see out of when reversing, gearbox feels nice, the thing feels really nice on turns. Honestly don't have any real complaints so far, I guess I'll see in the next few months if anything changes.

I'm in Saskatchewan, which will be similar. The WRX sedan starts at $32,495 MSRP and at least in my experience the only break you get is if the manufacturer is offering discounts and only on cash purchases.

Edit: for shits and giggles, there is a Ford dealer in Alberta with a Fiesta ST for $29,999...

EDIT 2: No options base WRX sedan is $33,700 cash ($4k discount), or you can finance it for $38,159 @ 1.9%
