Instead of Pygame, I'd recommend using Pyglet which uses opengl and is a million times faster.

SnowblindFatal

Apparently there's a free version of KeeperRL which is exactly the same except it only has ASCII graphics and no music.

In other news, holy crap Crawl 0.15 kicks rear end! No more item destruction, permanent corrosion and item weight. Also since last time I played there's a ton of super cool spells and many monsters have gotten unique abilities. Amnesia scrolls are rare but you can destroy spellbooks to forget a spell that is contained in it. Elemental utility items are also really sweet. You can use them as many times as you want, but they need you to kill a bunch of dudes before you can use them again. And, as usually, the level generators are cranking out even more varied levels than before.

The good part is summoning a spellforged servitor and suddenly you have a cool ally dude casting crystal spears and whatever else wicked spells you've got every turn without any mana costs.

Obligatory dick-waving:

A+++ would play again.

Biskup really should add in a pointed part about the dangers of aging in the forthcoming versions and tutorial dungeon.

Goddamnit Teleglitch is a bitch with the black walls. TWICE now I've accidentally stepped into them just after pretty much exploring the entire level 4 and before stepping into the teleporter. Just made it to level 6 in Teleglitch and died to some massive minigun bot. Depleted uranium rounds from my machine gun didn't even put a dent to it. I had a teleport item, but you can bet your rear end I respawned in a chamber right next to the room I was killed in, and was again mown down in about a second after popping my head outside.

I had just spent my AP panzerfaust to a wall turret. Goddamn this game is hard!

I also took a peek as to what the level 3 start equipment is. I HAD MUCH MORE poo poo THAN THIS! Goddamn! Not even a tube detector!

The "nuclear" part means that it has an internal nuclear reactor rather than requiring external energy cells. No ammo needed.

I once played Doom RL and built myself a nice hyperblaster and saved all the mod packs for a nanomanufacture ammo, only to find out that even with Whizkid level 2, I couldn't use even a single mod pack on my hyperblaster. Even the wiki said that I should've been able to apply at least 1 pack even if the whole assembly would've been impossible.

The game is annoying when it comes to things like these. I always feel like I'm being screwed over by the mechanics.

Also, I was just playing Doom RL real properly for the first time ever, had a nice burst chain cannon, super shotgun nano pack away from being nano shrapnel, loads of great gear and so on. Just killed the shamblers in deimos lab.

And then windows decided that I've postponed restarting for long enough and that this has got to come to a stop.

And naturally DoomRL's way of handling this is to wipe everything.

I think I'm done with the game.

Yeah, in my opinion, combat is typically the low point of those games. I liked Grimrock, but towards the end it was mostly pure combat and it got pretty boring.

I know in Dungeon Crawl, you can put lines in the .ini to force a --more-- prompt when certain lines of text appear. So, when something particularly bad, or particularly urgent happens, you're forced to take notice before moving on. I've definitely had use for it in the past, though the defaults are more acceptable now.

Yeah, I did that with necromutation when it was about to end, otherwise the game paid no attention to the whole thing. Only thing that could stop it normally was that you were hungry when you cast it, because then you became hungry when the spell ended.

Autoexploring isn't fun when you turn into a normal weak piece of poo poo and two shadow fiends pop up on the same turn both casting torment on you.

If you're going down that road, will you be retaining the traditional roguelike 1 turn = 1 step format, or would you switch to an action point budget? The former seems like it could get pretty tedious in multiplayer.

I guess you could have timed turns (make a move every 5 seconds or so) with tightly packed content. Then for when you need to rummage through your inventory or whatever, there could be a timeout feature, where you get a minute to do whatever.

I don't know why this is the default with everything, since it seems to be some sort of semi-protected folder where sometimes programs need admin rights to mess with files. Has anyone played Coin Crypt? It's in the latest Humble Bundle, and having just spent like 4 hours straight into it, I must say that it's an extraordinary roguelike. It has very innovative gameplay mechanics, and the abilities and weapons you use are also your money reserve, and intertwine with the game world in many ways. Basically you use some coins with various abilities during combat, and various coins have various cooldowns. Enemies use the same mechanics as the player, though they use coins at a slightly slower rate, I think. The combat gets very hectic, since it's real time, and thinking time is time you don't get to use on cooldowns. Highly recommended!
