On sale 75% off ($9.99) On Steam Until March 23rd From Flying Wild Hog, devs of Hard Reset as well as a bunch of people from the Painkiller team comes a reboot of Shadow Warrior. The katana melee weapon within the game is the best melee FPS weapon I've ever used. The way that the damage modeling occurs to enemies based on the exact swipe and angle of the sword is brilliant. I really enjoy the Serious Sam series as well and I am getting major SS vibes from this gameplay... with a great melee combat system added in to boot. IndieStatik "The locational damage system is downright impressive, with every enemy able to be chopped into tiny pieces, or even skeletonized by sustained gunfire. It’s satisfyingly meaty, and a sword swing has a visibly different effect to a spray of SMG fire. Ludicrous Gibs, indeed." TotalBiscuit's Preview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfMjYBLWlik Other preview impressions around the interwebs: Venture Beat "One slice with protagonist Lo Wang’s katana can decapitate, dismember, and chop enemies into several chunks as fountains of blood erupt from their collapsing bodies." The Escapist "It is gleefully fun to fight in this game. You'll run into a room with a submachine gun in each hand, and when you empty your clip into an oncoming wave of enemies you'll swap rapidly to a katana. You'll unleash a blast of magic force to knock enemies down, then try and behead them once they hit the floor. After they're dead, you'll swap to your crossbow and put a bolt through an enemy spellcaster as you sprint towards his friends, then wind up another crossbow shot as you do a sideways slash into the last enemy and simultaneously lodge a bolt in its cranium. The level design seems a bit drab, but otherwise looks good. Hard Reset was a clever little FPS without major issues (it certainly had smaller ones though). It had well designed weapon interplay, and shooting them was a fuckton of fun. Certainly looking forward their next effort.

I hope this has some decently sized areas unlike Hard Reset which was mostly cramped corridors with invisible walls everywhere.

I also wrote a preview of this one over at Indie Statik. I was really pleasantly surprised by this. I was either expecting something a lot like the original, or Hard Reset dressed up in vaguely asian clothing. It's neither of those. In fact, I don't think I've played anything quite like it, which is pretty exciting in of itself. The closest points of reference I can come up with are Ninja Gaiden (for the level structure, enemy design, dismemberment-heavy sword focused elements, rankings on each fights) and Bulletstorm (you're rewarded more points for varied kills, crazy-powerful guns, complex upgrade system, buying ammo with points). The levels are big and old-school enough to hide a lot of secrets and easter eggs. I only found a few in my first run through the beta, which is effectively the 'shareware' episode of the full game. I've gone from being vaguely curious about this one to excitedly waiting to get hold of the full version. Oh yeah, as for the humor, it's very much in the style of Bulletstorm - self-aware dick jokes and a slightly stupid, bumbling protagonist - although not quite as sharply written. GUI posted:I hope this has some decently sized areas unlike Hard Reset which was mostly cramped corridors with invisible walls everywhere. Combat areas tend to be pretty big, which is good as your dodge-step is a great way to cover great distances very quickly. You're expected to explore and loot fairly constantly, and there are character upgrades to increase the frequency of health, money and ammo drops. A running gag through the beta is that Lo Wang is kinda awful at the whole 'snappy one-liner' thing and is mocked for it pretty regularly. He's a comic-collecting nerd with a head full of corny action movies and has a personal batcave well stocked in case of a zombie apocalypse. He just happens to be a master assassin, too. For Classic you might want to also link Shadow Warrior Classic Redux. It has an improved graphics engine, modern controls, a better HUD and includes the two expansion packs that the free one doesn't.

Fuzz posted:Why is this not getting more love? I just got a 10% off coupon on Steam. Yeah, I got two coupons a while ago, and then a third coupon today for some reason. I don't know if I'm going to buy it at launch like I did with Rise of the Triad, since it isn't quite the kind of game I'm looking for at the moment. I am curious about how the game will turn out, though, and hope it turns out to be fun.

Coupon + preorder discount stacks I believe, cutting the price to just over $30. Personally I love what I've seen so far, but I don't have the machine (or spare cash) to play it anytime soon.

Wow, not bad for $34. The Special Edition seems a bit weak though. $10 extra for 2 in-game weapons, and the standard Digital Art Book/Soundtrack? Not sure what else they could have offered here, but doesn't really seem worth it.

Fuuuuck this game looks so fun. I can't wait, got my 10% off coupon and everything! I tried playing the original a few minutes ago (having gotten it off the humble bundle) and uh, man this game has not aged well. One of the flying enemies is like, two dimensional to the point where I can't see it when it's flying side to side, only when it's facing me.

Yeah that's kinda their gimmick disappearing like that. I still think Shadow Warrior has aged worse than Duke3D or Blood though but I can't quite pinpoint why.

It's probably the map design. I think Levelord designed most of the levels for Duke3d and Blood, but wasn't involved in Shadow Warrior. I like classic shadow warrior but the level design really starts to fall off as you progress through it.

I think its mostly because shadow warrior feels like it never truly hit its mark, like 3D Realms just kinda ran out of steam and inspiration for the game towards the end of its development and just kinda quickly pushed it out to market so it could compensate for the time spent making it Shadow Warrior is just one of those games that reeks of both potential and bad design direction in a whole Lotta ways and its really sad because Shadow Warrior definitely could have turned out way better if they had put more effort into it

I can't help but feel like stuff like this takes what was a light hearted, silly ninja game, and makes it into a game that very pointlessly tries really hard to shock people. Oh, just like Saint's Row I guess. edit: haha, that article even comes with "see if we give a gently caress, nerds" edge to it. Jesus.

I think giant purple dildos in ninja games is stupid as poo poo, and family guy style random humor is tired as gently caress. Therefore I "want to be a huge downer". I also think the Saint's Row series is a collection of poorly strung together meme jokes and barely passable action with a too-loose-to-work targeting system. Anyway, for the record, I do not think this is supposed to be some kind of literary masterpiece, and I'm perfectly fine with a game starring a guy called Lo Wang being silly. There's a pretty vast gap in my mind between "mindless violence and doofy one liners" and "Ha ha! Here's a DILDO!"

I don't see it being drastically different from the special edition bonuses of the Sledgehammer from SS3 and the Katana from Hotline Miami, honestly. It's just another signature melee weapon from a different game series. Although admittedly I never thought of the katana as particularly signature to HL:M but I guess it'd be too much to make it a baseball bat or golf club. (Or your BARE HANDS)

It's funny you should mention Family Guy because you are literally Buzz Killington. I just find it strange that you feel this way about the game because it's massively appropriate to its original source material, aka the original Shadow Warrior. It's just dick joke after dick joke. I'm not telling you what you should like but it's bizarre that you would criticize this particular dick joke and not one of the other dozens of dick jokes.

Uh, jesus christ you guys are touchy about my opinion on lovely dildo jokes. Also I played shadow warrior when I was like, I dunno, 16? As it happens, it was a decent build engine game with poor level design compared to duke and blood, and was embarrassingly racist. This one has turned down the comical racism, and added a giant dildo cross promo weapon. I think that is lame, and I think the article posted where the person from Devolver Digital had an obviously meant-to-be-edgy "how's that for a headline, nerds?" line was pointlessly antagonistic. Look, the main thing here is that there's no way that a purple dildo on a stick could actually cut anyone's head off. Maybe bruise them if you swung it hard enough, but decapitate them? It's interesting that my one off opinion post has had more comments than the people talking about the content of the game though, so that's something.
