Job -1, that I YOTJ'ed out of 8 years ago. It sucked. It was tier 3 tech support for a company that was actively outsourcing and considered its US employees as expensive luxuries. Since they were paying us so much they expected twice the work. It sucked. Some of us, like me, signed up to do tech support, but other folks, like one of my coworkers, was put into tech support after they moved the lab he supported overseas. I can't really say he was a friend or that I knew him really well, but I sat across the aisle from him, and like all crappy jobs, sometimes you just had to stand up and see who else needed a break, and then you would go out in the aisle and talk. You would learn about the other person, their hopes and dreams.

Eric was not happy with being moved to tech support, partially because he was lab support, and partially because he was done with IT. What he really wanted to do was be a cop. He had a strong faith and thought he could make the world a better place. He had been trying for a year to take the CO POST training that would make him hire-able, but our management kept messing with his schedule, and our director had told him that they could not guarantee that he would not have to work evenings, so night classes were off the table.

With a wife and 6 kids he quit with nothing certain, and through a wing and a prayer, he completed his training and was hired by the Boulder CO police department. I left the company a bit after that and lost contact with folks that knew him more.

Eric died Monday, as the first responding officer at the Boulder supermarket shooting. 7 kids. gently caress. On one hand he left his family and friends but on the other he died doing what he loved and by all accounts made a difference. I am saddened by the loss and feel small stressing about my caseload, which seems meaningless by comparison.

gently caress. That's tragic. Real stories, real lives behind the names in the headlines. How awful.

We have these old Surface tablets that came with Win 8 but have been updated to Windows 10. These tablets have 4 gb of soldered ram and Win 10 runs about as well as you'd expect. I was curious so I checked the minimum requirements and apparently Win 10 can be installed on a machine with 2 gb of ram, or 1 gb for 32 bit.

I'm kind of morbidly curious to build up a machine with 2 gb of ram, 5400 rpm laptop hdd and like a first gen i3 just to see how long it takes to boot to the desktop. Friday afternoons are slow anyway, so why not. I'll set the over/under at 10 minutes to have a usable desktop.

I just spent over an hour with a guy getting him logged into his computer, connected to his home network, connected to the vpn, and getting Office setup so he can use Outlook and Teams.

He was in the office ALL loving DAY yesterday for onboarding. Somebody could have sat down and gone over all this stuff in person, but instead he was referred to the Help Desk, so we could guess what he was seeing on his screen.

Oh, and his missing O365 licensing would have been discovered and taken care of yesterday.

Sheesh.

I have a NEW HIRE README doc on my images that lives in c:\users\public\public desktop that goes over the basics (vpn, logging timesheets, various application set up and usage, etc). I still get those calls but I just refer them to the document. (If they lie and say, "it still doesn't work" when I know they haven't even looked at it, I ask what step # for email setup (or whatever) they are stuck on, that usually calls their bluff). Saves a ton of time.

E: if you don't build your images yourself, talk to whoever does and ask them about including a doc. Or ask whoever manages your gpos about pushing it out. Or, just have a doc handy that you can email to users who call about basic setup stuff.

That's an advantage of working for a country government I suppose. While we all have our niches, everyone in the IT dept kind of does everything and it's pretty informal. I build the images and can do basically what I want with them, but I could just as easily run two offices over and ask the server / ad specialist to push the doc out via gpo and that would require maybe a 5 minute chat with our boss.

I'm currently hourly. Boss wants me to convert to salary with about an 8% raise. Totally not worth it, right? I don't get any overtime right now so it would definitely be a pay raise but part of being hourly is that I never have to work nights or weekends, and as salary I occasionally would (maybe 3 evenings per month and one Saturday / month).

Right now I work alternating weeks of 4 x 10 hour shifts on week 1, and 5 eights week 2, two of those days are wfh.

Salary would probably give me 1-2 extra wfh days every two weeks. All other benefits are the same.

The flip side is that there is only one higher hourly position, which I would probably qualify for at the end of the year, it should be a 15% pay bump. But the salary position has more headroom, ultimately capping out at 30% more than I make right now.

I guess writing it out, going salary seems like the practical choice. But I sure do like always leaving work at work and every evening and weekend is my own.

All you need is two numbers -- your company's market cap (A) and Cisco's market cap (B). If A !> say, 0.75B at a bare minimum, Cisco dgaf about your company, or how much you're "holding their feet to the fire".

CARES act was nice inasmuch as my boss let me order an XPS 17", 32 gb ram, 4k screen, 2060 gpu. Is there still CARES money out there? If so you should look into that so you can justify a high end laptop on the taxpayer's dime.

First machine that comes preloaded with Windows 11 showed up today.

You now must have an internet connection and Windows account to set up the device. No way around it that I can find.

I'll probably just throw the default image on it but wanted to see what the setup experience was. More annoying than 10, anyway.

Replacing an old Cisco switch with an Aruba 6200f. After two weeks the Aruba dies -- fans spinning very fast, won't boot. Replace the Aruba with another 6200f. After two weeks, the new Aruba switch dies the same way.

E2 vvv that reminded me of when I used to wait tables at this restaurant that had a "kids eat free" night and kids got these reusable cups with lids and straws. The straws were a thick plastic with accordion style folds and when they were waved through the air or blown through would make a high pitched screeching whistle. Having two dozen kids doing that from 5-8 pm was a very specific and horrific type of hell.
