CelticPredator, that's a great picture. Also, holy gently caress, what a great episode. I mean, Jesus. Amazing.

Guess I should be that guy, but that jelly bean scene went on just a bit too long, left a sour taste in my mouth. Otherwise, this was another amazing episode. The way they keep playing with expectations and throwing them away before you can fully form them is the smartest writing I've seen in a while.

The potential child rape was hard to watch, but thankfully they had that little bit at the end to leave me not feeling so lovely. Death of child molesters is always worth it. Jerry's side plot was incredible too. Had a good heart to it..and of course "I'm kind of a stickler, how's your short game!?" "HOW IS YOUR SHORT GAME!!"

I certainly was not expecting to ever see Crumply Crumplestien again. Unbelievable Tales which is somehow even more disgusting than Doc and Mharti.

They also had tried to kill each other. The giant slipped and killed himself with a blow to the head, leaving his wife and baby alone.

Loved the episode and the series in general so far. For those unfamiliar with Dan Harmon's technique, this episode was a cool example of his use of Joseph Campbell's Monomyth, which Harmon uses as a template for much of his story structure. The Call to Adventure even got a direct shout-out! People were speculating earlier in the thread about possible character development for Morty in terms of him becoming more assertive, and we really got to see that play out here. The attempted jellybean rape scene, disturbing as it was, demonstrated that Morty isn't ready to take the lead in adventuring, and still needs Rick to protect him from the worst of their crazy, chaotic universe. From a show-creating view that makes sense, of course, because if we started going on Morty-style adventures all the time the show would start feeling like, well, Adventure Time. What's cool is that the plot allowed Morty to take the hero's journey and grow in the process, even though he failed his quest. That sort of emotional groundedness is what made me fall in love with Community, so I'm happy to see the same fundamentals at work in an animated, serialized comedy, most of which are content with completely static characters. Also enjoying the studio and fan art in the thread, looking forward to more. JesusFists fucked around with this message at 12:52 on Jan 21, 2014 |

The whole post-credits scene was very Perry Bible Fellowship...just absurd in an incredibly dark fantasy way. "Remember him for the Jellybean he represents, not the Jellybean he was."

It certainly left me stunned. I can understand thematically why they did it. It's just, wow, the attempted rape of a child by someone who turned out to be a serial predator of children was literally the last thing I ever expected to see tonight. At the start of it, I thought they were going to stop when the jelly bean first grabbed Mort and acted sleazy. Then it kept going. Then Mort was forced over the sink with the guy drooling into his face. Then they were in the toilet stall. Then it got really violent leaving Mort on the floor covered in blood, screaming. Then we next see him go up to Rick traumatised and crying, begging to go home. But sure, apart from that, it was a blast.

Another good episode, but that scene was brutal. Pretty ballsy of Dan Harmon, considering all the outrage that followed his "rape joke" on Harmontown.

Really, Morty kicked that guy's rear end, so that part was immediately satisfying. But when he goes back to Rick, he's not screaming or anything - he's clearly thinking 'I'm a moron, I brought this on myself, I'm not cut out for this and I never should have thought I was' and he's in a miserable state with a broken spirit.

Goddamn, this loving show. I haven't straight up cried from laughing like this since the first time I was introduced to Always Sunny. e: vvvv Yes this is my favorite part as well. It would have been so easy to have Rick just be a jerk to Morty and honestly not care if he lives or dies, but that he actually loves him when poo poo goes down is hilariously endearing. Nah, thing was, it wasn't funny. It was presented as a traumatic, hosed up situation. I know comedy is a subversion of expectations, but this was a subversion of comedy. The set up was there for a cheap rape joke and they took a turn into the real world somewhere along the way. In a lot of shows, the jelly bean being creepy towards an underage boy in the restroom would have been the joke. I'm looking at you "family guy." It was hosed up, but I like shows to take poo poo in unexpected directions. The show doesn't seem to be afraid to take an actual look at some of the things people joke about, and that's interesting to me.

I didn't see an issue with the jellybean scene at all. Considering how hosed up their adventures are generally (the entire point of this episode) it had to be something that was actually worse than shooting the insect people in customs in the earlier episode and whatever. It's series consistent.

TO be honest that Unbelievable Tales short was pretty loving dumb. It was old hat standard violence with kinda standard torture-porn 101 stuff. There was nothing interesting about it. I don't like movies like SAW or Human Centipede or other revenge torture porn stuff, so maybe it's not for me, but it was really unimaginative and, as I wrote before, just dumb. I wouldn't even call it shocking, just blah. If the ball licking pre-rick and morty and this is what he comes up with on his own then he really does need that additional restraint normal TV provides. And other writers to help him, probably. Drifter fucked around with this message at 21:35 on Jan 21, 2014 |
