Seriously, I thought the whole point of Christianity and the New Covenant was that the chosen people were the people who chose to accept Christ, not any specific race of people.

Paul says in Romans that salvation through Jesus is "first to the Jew, then the Gentile," mostly because the Jews are still God's chosen people. Some Christians (though not many I'd wager) even believe that as long as Jews keep the Law, that they can still be saved.

Still even the ones who think that Jews are going to Hell because of their rejection of Jesus still point to Old Testament verses that say that God is with Israel and any nation that's against Israel is against God, and that God still loves them and they are his chosen people even if they're damned to suffer for eternity and so he just really hopes they all come to Jesus.

My favorite one of those was in the rock music tract where he had a guy say "God wants you to burn everything you have associated with rock music!" and there was a verse attached to it. I knew there was no way that the Bible literally said that, so I looked up the verse and it turned out to say something like "Some people collected a bunch of scrolls and burned them and they were worth a bunch of gold."

I was surprised to see a couple of (relatively) accurate posts in that soccer thread.

quote:

Soccer flourishes because it is inexpensive to play.

This is actually fairly true I've heard, since soccer doesn't really require more than a ball it's easily played almost anywhere. This I think is part of the reason why there was an outcry against instant replay being implemented in soccer.

I mean I realize his point was "Soccer is only popular because those poor countries can't afford better sports" but still.

quote:

However, the low scoring we hear about in soccer - a 3 to 2 soccer match is not much different than a 21 to 14 football game. Still just 5 scores in the game.

This is also slightly accurate, though there's more ways to score in football than just a touchdown, and even a touchdown has two parts to the score, but if touchdowns weren't worth six points then you'd have 3-2 football games as well. And then there's baseball which depending on how the fielders play can also have really low-scoring games, but I don't hear Freepers complaining about that.

However...

quote:

Football is, if anything, more popular now that it was back then and Soccer's popularity (or lack thereof) is virtually unchanged.

Well, I guess he's partially right, soccer's popularity as the world's most popular sport is virtually unchanged. :v:

Even if a flood that literally wipes out all life on earth won't happen, do they think that no floods will happen?

I remember Conservapedia pulling some bullshit that "MSM won't refer to them as floods, just flooding, because calling them floods would be admitting that the Great Flood was fact."

They obviously can't believe that no floods will happen, but the logic seems to be that God will never again send a global flood. Since global warming implies a global flood, then clearly the Bible says this is impossible and so any claims that it will happen are atheist lies. They obviously think even if another global flood did happen, that it wouldn't wipe out all life or humanity (because they're present at the apocalypse), but they think a global flood at all, even one that only wiped out 20% of the human population, is still impossible because God promised no more global floods.

So their position is even IF global warming is real, it doesn't matter because global flooding is impossible. They'll also probably use an analogy of an ice cube floating in your drink doesn't make the drink overflow when it melts, so ice caps melting won't cause a rise in sea level.

quote:

Even if it wouldn't render humanity literally extinct, does the possibility of untold destruction and inconceivable amounts of human suffering not bother them at all, or is it all moot in the grand end-season match between god and satan? Who cares how much pain we cause now, Jesus is coming eventually, so everything will be fine?

"Well when the tribulation happens everyone left on earth will suffer and die anyway so global warming doesn't even matter. Heck, maybe the people who die in it got off lucky because they won't live to suffer even worse!"

Or they could be like my mom, who when she hears about horrible tragedies happening in the world, says "Well the Bible says that the world will get worse until Jesus comes back and we can't do anything to stop it, so oh well." :smith:

E-Tank posted:

There actually are, but that means it's a *good* thing because once the tribulation hits all the good little christians go to heaven. So if anything they want it to come even faster.

While I don't think that most fundamentalists believe it, there may be an element of "If we gently caress up the world enough then God will be forced to do the second coming before the world gets destroyed." Maybe only the extremest of the extremists believe that. But most fundies believe Revelation is more or less an accurate telling of the future, and that the temple needs to be reconstructed in Jerusalem before the second coming will happen. Since the world can't end before the temple is rebuilt, then logically nothing we do to the planet can damage it or threaten humanity in any way before then.

Usually the ones that want the tribulation to come faster are the ones trying to get the temple rebuilt since it's a big requirement for the end times.

That's a disturbing implication of that comparison that I don't think a lot of people even notice. It's bad enough to vilify gay people like that, but it also sounds like they don't really have any idea pedophilia is harmful, they just think it's 'gross' the same as they do homosexuality.

I think it was Slacktivist that explained why fundamentalists and the like are always comparing bestiality and pedophilia to homosexuality, it's because they understand sex differently than we do. Whereas we base it on the ability to consent, they base it on the idea of sin. I think he used some sort of box analogy.

So to us, we can say it's obvious an animal or child can't consent, and thus is wrong, but an adult male can consent to another adult male, so there's no problem there. To them, "man and woman" is right, whereas everything else is sin. To them, bestiality, pedophilia, and homosexuality are all sins and therefore all the same, which is why they constantly compare them. Because to their point of view, one's the same as another, and why they firmly believe that allowing gays to be accepted will lead to marrying toasters and sheep, because to them we're just legalizing sin, which means we will of course legalize all sin eventually. They can't wrap their heads around the fact that others base it on consent.

Basically, as long as you don't say the n-word you're not racist or a bad person.

Freep has a simplified understanding of racism that basically boils down to you can only be racist if you say "I hate blacks because their skin color is black." To them even if you say the n-word it's not necessarily racist, and they'll reference that Chris Rock bit to try and support it (a bit that Chris Rock has said he'll never do again because of racists using it to justify their racism). Though of course they'll steer clear of actually saying the word and delete posts that have it because despite this they're still aware they'll look bad if they say it outright.

But yeah their understanding of it means that as far as they're concerned saying the things they do is just "telling it like it is" and not actually racist.
