Yeah, he was easily my favorite part of those books. The Zerg knockoffs were kind of dull, but Nasaug and the rest of the Canim pretty much owned.

I need smug, loud, big, brash knights. Someone who could yell "OH YEAH" as he pummels his enemies into the floor. Or maybe "CAN YOU SMELL WHAT THE ROCK IS COOKING".

Basically, give me someone that looks like Brian Blessed.

Traditionally you're only allowed to ask one question, so now you know which door lies but not "which is the right way to go". The real answer, incidentally, is that they're always both hooked up to an orb of annihilation and you need to find a third door.

Thanks, Gary.

Apologies if this is too big of a dump.

so i asked for "people of color fantasy portraits" awhile back for one of my players. Since then I've been continuing searching since its a hard thing to find. I come now with repayment in kind for those who are interested. Some are a little ambiguous and could go any number of ways ethnically speaking, especially with very light editing\

There's great stuff out there but man it is buried. Also, interestingly, far easier to find cool armored warrior women than men.

This is a good post, so I'm gonna throw on some more of the people of color ones I've found.

Okay but why do they each have their own chess board?

Because ludus is a 5th dimensional hyperchess variant and not actual chess, in part because the realities of war in a setting where 'flying dudes' is a real possibility calls for a non-standard set of pieces and board. There was also something about logistics/pieces supporting each other, maybe? It's been a while since I read the books.

E: That's not them each having their own board, that's a raised board above the main one.

From what I've heard, it's almost impossible to find freelance artists who are: 1) cheap, 2) quick, and 3) willing to pay any attention at all to art notes. Given the budget and time constraints RPG publishers have to work with, point 3 is the one that usually gets waived for the sake of expediency.

From talking with Mikan, I've heard the secret is to use artists who don't specialize in RPGs because those are the people who end up with all of the above. Career RPG artists are how you end up with this:

Can someone post some context for this? Is that a failed commission or what?

It's from here, which is the summary of prep for a panel on art in D&D. I that piece of art with the caption intact handy because it's hilarious.

quote:

In response to this and Chris’s earlier statement “illustrators don’t get to always draw what they want,” I wrote:

When I do freelance writing for RPGs, I’m sometimes in the position of trying to get an illustrator to draw what I tell them to. This is mysterious (because it passes through an art director’s hands as well) and sometimes frustrating (esp. because I have little training in suggesting illustrations, and there are often good reasons for the other agents in the process to say “no, what Tavis describes here won’t work”). I always try to write my art orders to focus on non-white characters using medieval-realistic equipment in situations that really emerge in play, and the output is often white heroes in anime-stylized gear in situations that happen in fantasy novels or the player’s daydream about playing D&D but don’t get any attention at the table.

quote:

Ryan replied:

The illustration that didn’t quite turn out is hilarious when you explain what it should have been. It looks like D&D nature porn. The RPG audience probably won’t ever kick it’s preference for chain-mail bikinis though. WoW-looking elf chicks might die out someday soon… I hope.

It's an interesting read. WotC ended up using the art for something or other eventually, but it pretty spectacularly failed to meet the art order requirements.
