Episode 49 - Free of the Cruel, Unending Ring

Please rise for the Gran Soren National Anthem.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=caup2pd0Sok

This is a Wikipedia blurb.

Dragon's Dogma is an action role-playing video game developed and published by Capcom for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game features an open world fantasy setting, in addition to hack and slash and survival horror gameplay elements, and was released in North America on May 22, 2012. The game was developed by staff members that worked on previous Capcom franchises such as Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, and Breath of Fire. (All favorites of mine, well the old ones anyway)

This is Dragon's Dogma.

This game is damned amazing. It is pretty much a Dungeons and Dragons Pretty Barbie Dress up game.
Gear up, look cute, feel fresh, and go into the wilderness to find adventure.

Quests to be completed, mysteries to be uncovered, weapons and armor to be aquired, dudes/babes to swoon, and most importantly monsters and ne'er-do-wells to be brutally slaughtered by the dozens! Truly Enjoyable B Grade Fantasy.

The game features multiplayer in a similar sense to Dark Souls, except instead of you joining another persons game for a time, you instead get their AI partner called a Pawn.
Once you are done with the Pawn, or they get chucked off a cliff, you can send them back with a comment, review on their appearance and helpfulness, and an item as a gift. They will sometimes speak up on their wisdom and keen observations.

:siren:I will be playing the PS3 version, so anyone that wants their Pawn to give me a hand can post their Pawns name. I will probably change up the Pawns for every video. But, I will avoid using grossly overpowered Pawns for my current level to properly show off the difficulty and avoid paying for the Pawns.

This LP will cover the original content as well as the Dark Arisen expansion content, eventually.
But overall this will be a casual experience where I go through the quests and change up the pawns and vocations to expose everyone to the sheer amount of variety that is possible in this game. I might use some of my higher level characters to show off vocations I don't normally play as. There are a couple of quests that have a few ways to be completed and I will ask for your input on how to proceed, I might then choose the other solution during a New Game+, should I go that route.

:siren:As a side note: Don't post spoilers about the story line or quests until they have been covered. Thanks. :smaug:

Lookin cute, feelin fresh.

:krad:

I bought and played this and the expansion while working in South Korea. Good times, but I couldn't read the manual! So, I will also slap in a Korean word around the end of each session. Edutainment!

To go quickly is foolish. To go slowly is prudent. Not to go; that is wisdom.
Let's go with a classic: Conan the Barbarian

I really wanted to like this game, but it has the most annoying escort missions in any game that I've played and dropped it pretty early. It'll be good to see the rest.

This game was absolutely AMAZING from what I played of it. That said, the lack of fast-travel and crippling AI were huge drawbacks :( I got the DLC back when it was free on PS+, but I've yet to retry the game.

I love this game, but it's on my backlog along with a metric fuckton of other 80+ hour long games.

I loved that the game's idea of a fast travel system was letting you make a five minute run through a mine to cut off like five minutes of travel time and eight minutes of fighting harpies.

The really nice thing about the game is how classes and special abilities work. If you get tired of one playstyle you can switch to another pretty easily. If the new style doesn't work you can just change over again.

From the first video we saw the use of a cliff as a weapon. There are a number of cliffs and drops in the world you can throw enemies down, but there are also a couple specific monsters that have attacks that can send players and pawns flying. Watching a particularly strong warrior pawn get booted down a waterfall by a troll is both hilarious and disappointing.

This game looks so fun. The ability to grab and throw things, also enemies into environmental hazards is like the one thing I ever wanted out of action RPGs. Why did it never come out for the PC. :negative:

Let's go with some kind of warrior.

Yeah, Dark Messiah was ages ago, and too short.

By the way, does DD have any sections where systematic cliff-tossing lets the player break the difficulty over the knee?

Oh God, Dragon's Dogma. It's kind of janky and unpolished, but it's more ambitious than it looks and the overall mechanics, regardless of what class you choose, are a rollicking good time.

This is one of my favorite action RPGs ever! I say we need a giant norse warrior woman or something of the sort for a pawn, named Jodis.

It's what I went with and it went wonderfully for me.

This game is fantastic. It has it's rough spots, but I think the expansion mostly fixed the fast travel issue, which was the worst one. But no other game has anything like the pawn system and pawns own.

EDIT: Changed vote.

The same reason Dark Souls took a year and a petition to get ported to the PC: Most Japanese studios don't focus a lot of time on PC stuff these days, partially because the games they make don't sell as well on the PC as they do on the consoles. It's too bad because this game would drop frames like you wouldn't believe on my 360 and the load times are pretty extreme in some cases.

No tears, only dreams.
I loved this game when it came out. I should definitely give it another go, I haven't touched the new DLC. I don't care how we make our character look but he has to be a Goony As gently caress Strider. Striders are the most broken class in the game.

Cannot wait to see more of this LP.

I really really enjoyed this game but unfortunately I was hit by the save corruption bug in the Dark Arisen patch and lost 20+ hours of progress and I just haven't been able to will myself to pick it back up and start again. Here's hoping this lp is just what I need to convince myself to try again!

I don't think so, you can generally only pick up small, weak monsters. Climbing is really, really important for non-mage classes though. Almost all big monsters are much easier if you hit them in the right spot and for some it's absolutely required.

The Dark Arisen version makes a number of quality of life changes including ones to fast travel, tho I'm sure the OP will go into that when it becomes relevant.

Definitely one of my favorite games of all time, just a ton of fun.

Mages are fun and flashy but not particularly dynamic so I vote for...

Muscle Wizard Hercule

There is a fast travel system and the world is actually waaaaaay smaller than it seems on the outset. Dragon's Dogma is an incredibly uneven game, what's good is great and what's bad is terrible. But the good makes up for it.

Shame my pawn is like level 200 or something.
