20:31 Hive Sibellus; Mid-hive outside of "Vic's Devotional Pamphlets and Pulp Bookstore."

RRATs Team Charlie finds itself in the midhive of hive Sibellus on a rainy night, though this far underneath the upper hive, they only way they know there is rain is from looking out the windows during the flight in from the Fortress of the Just. The Arbites did not get a briefing in the air, but were told they would receive a full briefing on the ground.

The Team sits behind a joint arbite/enforcer baricade around a one story building, with nothing on it's right and another building on it's left with a alleyway in between. A faded sign above the door reads "Vic's Devotional Pamphlets and Pulp Bookstore". Looming further above the bookstore is the shadow of a large Hive Support Strut. It soon becomes apparent why they were going to receive their briefing on the ground, Senior Judge-Arbitrator Matheson, who is the father of the fledgling RRATs program, is there personally.

This only makes sense, as this is Team Charlie's first mission in the field, after months of training.

The Judge-Arbitrator greets the assembled Arbites, "Good evening men, got quite a doozy for your first outing in the field, but we can't be babying you folks. At 18:56 Local Enforcer dispatch received a call of shots fired. Initial response, consisting of two enforcers, arrived on scene at 19:01. Their patrol car immediately took fire from a heavy stubber down the side alley on the left. The officer driving died immediately. the car crashed nearby and the other officer requested immediate support. By 19:23 a cordon had been established by the Enforcers and Arbites first response. at 19:25 the front doors opened and a hostage was shoved outside. The hostage yelled out 'the Silent of the Emperor have taken this building! If Druxus Creedus is not freed by 10 tonight we'll blow up the support column and cause the upper hive to fall down around us!' Right afterwards the woman was detonated by a bomb strapped to her." The Judge points and a scorched and bloody spot in front of the door.

Matheson then points up at the looming support strut, "The Silent of the Emperor are a mid-hive gang, who believe that they are the chosen of the Emperor. As such they are free to rob and take from the non-chosen; they also believe it is below them to talk to non-chosen. Druxus Creedus is a leader of theirs that the Enforcers caught a week ago in a sting of an arms transaction. That bookshop is build right up against one of the hive support struts. Intel has shown a semi-truck is down the left side alley with a heavy stubber on the cab. It is possible they may have unloaded explosives and are planting them. Intel is light. We don't know their numbers, or the numbers of hostages. all we have is this blueprint file that I've annotated on"

"Your primary mission is to secure the location. If you can disarm the explosives fine, otherwise explosive disposal units are on the way. Ensure hostage safety if you can, but stopping them from blowing the place up comes first. Any questions? If not gear up and plan your angles!"

Okay, standard post your sheet from recruit thread in your first post. Discuss tactics, ask Matheson questions, and pick gear when you're ready.

Matheson waits until the first line of questions is asked before responding, "Casmirre that's a no can do on day cycle. Sure we have the authority to switch it off, but they're also trying to evacuate the whole sub-level in case this thing comes crashing down and that would be a nightmare in the dark. We are hooked into the local power grid and can take down the power to the building whenever you guys want, so if you want to switch off the lights right before knocking down the door, just say so, I have the power guy patched into your frequencies. There is a building across the street you could set up to snipe in; I would suggest only one of you go over there otherwise you risk undermanning yourselves before you attack, but I'll leave that decision up to you."

Matheson closes his eyes and begins to speak, as though reading from the back of his eye lids, "The Silent are moderately equipped for a hive gang. Most of their kit seems to be Guard surplus. They use older model lasguns and las-carbines without the variable power settings, but they still make use of overcharge packs. They usually have flak coats for armor, though some have been observed wearing flak vests, rarely full on Guard flak armor." He opens his eyes, "anything else?"

Matheson gives a leery eye at Keter, "If you can get one alive that's fine, but just like hostages, they are a distant secondary to making sure they don't bring the hive down around us. Stopping them takes priority over anything else."

Arbitrator Lenth is led to the building across the street. He is let into a small apartment that had already been evacuated. He takes a peak in the apartment and out the window. It has a clear view of the alleyway and the indicated truck. There is a heavy stubber turret on the top with a bullet shield giving cover to the person manning it.

Intelligencer J. Keter quickly runs up to the building, and pulls out an auspex to try and scan for life forms in the building. However, too distracted about the thoughts of breaking faces, he's unable to get any life readings from inside.

Okay, Schizotek failed his tech use test big time, so you've no idea on the numbers. Olan is set up ready to snipe. The guy has a blast shield, so everything but his head has cover, so either you need to make a called shot on the head, or penetrate the armor, which is an AP of 4.

Make final equipment selection, and then determine if you're going to snipe the stubber and go down the alley, breach through the front, or something else I'm not anticipating. Feel free to have conversations over what tactic to use; Frajaq isn't the end all be all if you don't agree with him.

Also fleshed out map:

The plan is set, Lenth and Strang would double tap the heavy stubber and the truck's engine block, while the rest stack up to breach the main door, using the dual shots as their signal to go. Lenth takes aim at the ganger's head and squeezes the long-las's trigger. A loud whip-crack echoes throughout the night, and the head disappears from the heavy stubber operator, bloodless having been cauterized by the las weapon. Right after that Strang takes aim at the much easier target of the truck and fires, the round sinking into the engine block.

At the sound of the las shot the breach team goes to work, Keter uses the power ram provided by the Team leader, and destroys the door. Right after that Canaban primes a photon flash grenade and throws it into the doorway while the arbites cover their eyes. A split second later a loud bang is heard followed by the screams of people inside. Casmirre is first into the breach, as he enters he feels a sharp pain in his side at the same time he hears the bark of a shotgun from his left. Behind the bookstore counter is a lone ganger with a shoddy pump shotgun. Casmirre shows the ganger what a real shotgun is like. The Vox Legi barks forth, and not one buckshot pellet misses, the ganger collapsing into a wet heap behind the counter.

Right on Casmirre's heels is Koenig who enters and moves forward. Before him he sees a huddled group of civilians and employees, being held as human shields by the gangers behind them, most of whom are rubbing their eyes. Not missing a beat, he lets the Subjugation sprayer go, a thick mist of green consuming the civilians and gangers alike. As the mist settles, Koening sees both civilians and gangers in a heap, though most of the civilians are out of control, too busy rubbing their eyes and screaming in pain to remain effective human shields. The gangers seem unaffected, though they are still rubbing their eyes.

Okay, the snipers did their thing. Since Tias was interested in wasting a bolt in the semi, and I wasn't going to have Schizo go down the alley alone, i just had you folks all breach the front door, giving you guys a surprise round. Frajaq used a flash grenade and blinded the formation, but the shotgunner by the door survived. He nicked BWFC for 3 wounds, and he then exploded him. Kaizer88 did some damage to the formation and stunned the civilians, but the formation made their toughness test. Here is the Initiative order with wounds and statuses noted.

Strang
canaban
casmirre 12/15
formation 8/10 blind for five rounds

The alley team of Strang, Anders, and Keter begin to make their way down the alley, with Strang taking the point. As they round the corner, they begin to hear the sound of the loading gate door close! If they don't make it down to the door before it closes, they'll either have to go back around, or try to destroy the large bay door!

At the same time, the two arbites inside spring forward to flank the group of gangers. Casmirre begins his flank, but before Koenig can start to flank, one of the Gangers, apparently the leader of this little group since he is in flak armor over a cloak, and also because he's yelling, shouts for the scum to charge in the direction of the Support Specialist.

The sight of the blind gangers tripping and picking themselves up around the civilians his hilarious, but they manage to get enough momentum to essentially act like a whirling dervish. Multiple strikes lance out at Koenig, but the pathetic knives do nothing more than scratch his armor. He takes a few steps back and sprays the group with even more suppression spray. Between being blinded and getting a second dose of suppression spray, the group collapses, gasping for air and praying to the Emperor.

Okay, whatever baddies are in the back of the bookshop have pressed the "close" button on the loading bay door. It will be closed in three turns. This formation is blinded and stunned, if the two guys in front want to ignore them to move on you can; once you've secured the bombs you'll call in the rest to follow you up and they'll mop them up.

How far is it to the loading bay? Could one realistically run - and perhaps slide into - it?

each square is one meter, so it's realistic you the can get there by running, might take a few turns though. For ease sake, even if you get there last turn, you won't have to duck and roll or anything.

Also, I love the fact none of you have agility above 40. Means when you run right into dudes on overwatch, they'll likely shoot first, see shotgun dude.

The Arbites move with quick practiced precision. Strang takes the lead down the alleyway as they approach the loading bay door as it slowly creaks down into place. Keter takes the lead during the last leg of the sprint up to the door. He peers in the back of the truck, and notices a few standard barrels with "DANGER: Explosive! painted on the side. Judging by the size of the truck and how nearly empty it is, there could be a large number of the barrels inside the building; he warns the group to watch their fire as they stack up at the door.

Meanwhile Jet Casmirre and Sargas Koenig stack up at the door in the far back corner of the building. Koenig tries the handle and it seems unlocked. Casmirre and Koenig look at each other to see who wants to move first.

Okay, combat has fast forwarded Two rounds while you guys got into place. If you guys don't quite like the spacing or positioning of your guys that's fine. The Garage door will close at the end of next turn, so alley team has to breach this turn. If you guys want to know how breaching works, look at the OOC thread, I posted how it will work, but essentially each person in a group (here Keter, Strang and Canaban is one and Casmirre and Koenig is the other) indicate what their actions are (open door and throw in flash grenade, hook left and fire at anyone in the corner etc) and the breach will occur at the turn of the person lowest on the order.

Feel free to plan IC here or take it to the OOC thread or whatever.

Breach Group Canaban/Strang/Keter

Keter throws the flash grenade, and on the pop all three move in. Canaban is much more reserved than Strang, who levels his shotgun while on the move behind cover. The entire back section seems to be a warehouse, with pallets of books strewn about. The gangers are busy grasping at their ears, and the one that Strang kills never sees the shot coming. What is disturbing is back wall is lined up with barrels like those found in the back of the truck.

As gunfire errupts, a shout is heard from the north-east room, "Keep them off me for a few seconds longer! Then well shall show them what it means to cross The Silent!"

Breach Group Cassimire/Koenig

Just as the photon flash grenade is going off in the back warehouse, Cassmire and Koenig professionally breach the door at the back of the main storefront. After the flash goes off, they quickly clear the room, which appears to be a break room, finding only a few disoriented bookstore workers. They hear gunfire erupt from the rear, but also hear the shout from the back room.

Okay, so you're in the back room and side employee break room. The pink triangle means they're all currently in a formation, thought I'd try this for cinematic looks as opposed to the troop shaped blob. To make things Interesting, I you shoot at the formation, you get -20 to BS to avoid hitting the barrels behind them. You can opt not to take this -20, but a miss means hitting a barrel, which could lead to bad things, or be completely harmless. If you had a breach they could tell you if a a stray bullet might detonate them!

Cassimire and Koenig, you can pick one of the two doors you want to breach next and we'll pretend you're stacked up because of rule Zero. I would probably not flash the back warehouse if I were you, since you WILL risk blinding the players. Though you two could choose to split up. You back folks no longer act as a breach formation, your actions happen on the initiative list.

Lastly, Olan, you are on your way up, you are like a meter from the front door, just focused on the action is all.

Order and stats:

There was a firefight!

Rounds begin to fly as the RRATS team begins to let buckshot fly. Their shotguns bark forth, and demonstrate why the weapons are the favored weapons for close quarters combat. Buckshot and beanbags tear into the gangers; torso are shredded, heads are pulped, and welts are left. Between the losses and the fear stricken into the gangers from the assault, all their las shots go wide, even at this range.

Meanwhile Casmirre and Koenig stack up at the last unopened door. Casmirre lets a photon flash grenade fly, and right afterwards Koenig enters the room to spray down whomever is inside. One lone man is behind a desk, clearly belowing to the manager, rubbing his eyes as Koenig sprays him down. He begins coughing and wheezing and rubbing his eyes even more.

Meanwhile as Lenth makes his way through the bookstore. As he does, the remaining civilians begin to finally rouse out of their shock and run for the front door, some tripping over the still disabled gangers that just a moment before were threatening their lives.

Senior Judge-Arbitrator Matheson gets on the vox in response to the requests of the team, "Copy you have disabled hostiles, but I can't send in more arbites and risk their lives while those explosves are still a potential threat. You secure the threat that the explosives will detonate, and trailers will be right behind you."

Olanphonia, strict movement be damned, if you want you can move to and open the door to the warehouse next turn as a half action and still fire next if you want. Kaizer88, since ForeverBWFC didn't post this round, I let you be the hero for breaching.

You folks could inflict enough damage next round to get the formation to break, which if they do they will surrender and basically end of mission, so shoot some mooks!

Death to The Heretic

Strang's shotgun barks forth, and a well clustered spread of buckshot flies through the air towards the leader of the ganger scum. At nearly the same time, Lenth and Cassmirre stack up on oppisite sides of the door leading from the breakroom to the warehouse, and open up on gangers, but not before they get off some shots.

When the gunfire ceases, the leader and two more of the gangers lay in bloody piles, the three remaining, seeing they are out-numbered, drop their weapons and surrender. However, the Arbites do not emerge unscathed; laying next to the crate he had taken cover behind is Officer Keter, face smoldering from where a las shot punched right through his helmet.

With the gangers neutralized and the "bomb technician" secured by Koenig, the trailers quickly move in and secure the remaining gangers, still covered in riot suppression spray and and gagging on it. A bomb disposal expert is brought in and examines the device. It seems that the device had just been armed; were it not for the quick action of those involved the technician had only to press a button on the pad to detonate the device.

The following days are trying for the officers. Keter was the first Arbite of the RRATS to have been lost in the line of duty. First there is his funeral and three days afterwards to reflect and decompress. After that however,Senior Judge-Arbitrator Matheson puts Team Charlie through their paces before he lets them out into the field. The RRATS initiative was still in its infancy and under intense scrutiny, the Judge-Arbitrator wanted to ensure that Team Charlie would be ready for their next mission.

Kaizer88 posted:

Gonna try and get him subdued and manacled. Do I need to bludgeon him with my melee weapon or can I just do it while he's stunned and blinded?

Let's say from now on anyone who is stunned can be manacled as a half action. If they are not stunned, then a grapple must be won, or you can hit them with your stun stick.

Okay, now for experience, here is how I'm going to do it:

One Month Later

After a rough month of heavy drilling while teams Alpha and Bravo are out doing missions, RRATS teams Charlie is summoned up to one of a hundred identical briefing rooms in the Fortress of the Just. The room is dusty and smells of stale Lho smoke, likely not used in quite some time. Waiting at the briefing Table is Arbiter the team has not seen before.

She nods her head, "Good Morning. I am Detective-Lieutenant Kayis, and I shall be your Liaison. Senior Judge-Arbitrator Matheson is very busy, and while the RRATS program is very important to him, he can not let his desire to personally brief every team for every mission get in the way of the rapid response the teams are capable of. As such I will be the one you answer to both out in the field, as well as here. I will dispense your briefings and give you your orders. Unless Matheson himself is speaking to you, you listen to my orders above all others, do you understand?"

Not waiting for a reply, she thumbs a button on the desk and a project hums to life, projecting an image on the screen in the room:

She continues talking without first addressing the diagram. "We have an operative who has been in deep cover with a group of hired mercenaries and criminals for the past four months. We believe that they are tied to an even greater criminal network involved in all sorts of illegal activities. Two days ago the operative tele-voxed a voicemail system set up to be for his cover identity's sister. He left the message 'it looks like rain the next 10 days'. That message was code, and means that he is in danger and needs immediate extraction."

She points one gauntleted hand at the image on the screen, "This is their hideout, an old commercial structure in the effluent plains at the base of Hive Scintilla. This is a composite image based on old blueprint records, surface piercing pict drone, and the intel from our operative. His intel is that they number anywhere from 25-40, depending how many are out doing missions. Despite their location being located in the flood plains outside the hive, they are well equipped in military surplus; expect full flak armor standard laz weaponry, and some more heavy hitting guard weaponry such as the occasional plasma gun or chain sword. The operative also indicated that some of them are twists and hardier than average, and that they also use combat enhancing drugs as well."

She clears her throat, "Any questions? If not requisition your gear and get to the shuttle."

Kayis nods at Lenth before pressing a button on the desk. The screen changes from the map to a photo array spread. All the pictures are of the same man, but with varying facial hair and top hair combinations, "The picture in the middle is the most recent file photo. The informant has been in deep cover, only keeping contact via dead drops, so appearance may have changed. He'll know you guys are there to help him, so if someone isn't shooting at you, that might be them."

She then smiles at Strang and Koenig. "Besides our operative, assume everyone is a hostile. This place isn't strategically important, so don't worry about collateral damage. As for support, your squad will be dropped off a few blocks away via unmarked van. There will be a Arbites gunship in the area. The moment you radio that you have the informant the gunship will come to assist and light the place up once you give them an all clear. Anything else?"
