i went to SCAD and i had my share of breakdowns there. it operates on a Quarter-based system rather than a Semester-based system, so basically every class is "crunch time", every assignment is worth a lot more of your grade and there's way less time to actually learn how to do things before the project you'll be graded on is due. IMO the only way to truly succeed is to already be a professional-level artist before you even apply, so the only point of actually attending the school is networking and the degree you get afterwards. i'm a Poor so i was trying to work part time while attending which was not remotely viable if you want to both pass your classes and get some sleep at night, but it was either that or literally not being able to afford to eat so

no art school should operate on a quarter based system imo it's laughably ineffectual

A disturbingly high proportion of young people, particularly women, experience unwanted sexual attention in entertainment districts across Queensland.

This is the bad news from a two-year, independent evaluation of the Queensland government's 2016 "Tackling Alcohol-Fuelled Violence" (TAFV) policy (the good news included a significant statewide reduction in serious assaults).

One in three patrons reported unwanted sexual attention—including harassment, unwanted touching, or sexual gestures—in or around a licensed venue in the preceding three months. Among those who reported unwanted sexual attention, two in three women (68%) also reported physical and/or verbal aggression.

The rate of unwanted sexual attention was highest for young women (ages 18-24). More than 50% had experienced this harm in the previous three months, as the chart below shows.

In the Fortitude Valley entertainment district, a staggering one in four reported unwanted sexual attention on the night they were interviewed (26% of 262 female patrons interviewed and followed up the next day).

Over the two-year evaluation, 4,055 patrons (43% female) were interviewed on Saturday nights on the streets of three entertainment districts—Cairns, Fortitude Valley (Brisbane) and Surfers Paradise (Gold Coast).

While the rates fluctuated over time in these areas, the rate of unwanted sexual attention didn't change when comparing the months before and after the TAFV policy took effect. The chart below shows the trend for Fortitude Valley.

There is a real movement with the goal to stop newspapers from identifying sex workers as sex workers and, instead, identify them as people. Especially for indigenous victims who have, in the past, just been labeled a "prostitute" by default. "Former Catholic schoolgirl" gets more sympathy and reaction than "prostitute" or even "sex worker".
As much as we should remove the stigma surrounding sex work in general, identifying these people as something other than a "sex worker", as a real person who needlessly suffered and died, is a real goal for a lot of organizations. It's about the person, not the job. They even included her career aspirations.

If it's part of some pattern by these people or something I'm unaware of it, I'm not trying to start a fight.

An appeals court in El Salvador on Monday acquitted a 21-year-old rape victim accused of killing her stillborn baby, in a landmark case closely watched by rights groups.

The court in San Salvador overturned a 30-year sentence imposed on Evelyn Hernandez, who was convicted under the Central American country's strict anti-abortion laws in 2017.

Hernandez's lawyer, Bertha Maria Deleon, triumphantly announced the verdict on Twitter: "Acquitted! Yes we could."

"Thank God, justice has been done," Hernandez said as she thanked her supporters from the steps of the courthouse in San Salvador's northeastern Ciudad Delgado district.

The 21-year-old, who served 33 months of her original sentence, said "it was hard the whole time I was inside."

"My future is to continue studying and to move forward with my goals. I am happy," she said.

Hernandez's legal team had secured a retrial after appealing the 2017 verdict on the grounds that it had failed to take into account key forensic evidence indicating that the baby had choked in the womb.

The month-long retrial concluded last Friday, with prosecutors requesting a 40-year sentence. They now have 10 days to appeal the verdict.

Amnesty International welcomed the verdict as a "resounding victory for the rights of women in El Salvador."

"It reaffirms that no woman should be wrongly accused of homicide for the simple fact of suffering an obstetric emergency," the rights group said.

El Salvador should "end the shameful and discriminatory practice of criminalizing women once and for all by immediately revoking the nation's draconian anti-abortion laws," Amnesty's Americas director Erika Guevara-Rosas said.

Like, okay. I'm not dancing on his grave, but it's fortunate that his arrogance only lead to one death. And that's one death that we know about, so it's possible he did sicken some people. Intellectually disabled man held in solitary confinement for six years in 'outrageous' case

Disability advocates have expressed outrage at revelations an intellectually disabled man judged unfit to face criminal charges was effectively detained in permanent solitary confinement for six years.

The case of Adrian, whose real name has been suppressed to protect his identity, is contained in a scathing report by the Queensland ombudsman into the state’s forensic disability services system.

Phil Clarke’s report accuses authorities of “widespread legislative non-compliance” at the medium secure 10-bed facility at Wacol in Brisbane (the FDS) and makes 15 recommendations, including an end to the use of police dogs for behaviour control.

Clarke drew specific attention to the case of Adrian, who was held in seclusion 99% of the time between 24 September 2012 and 18 June 2018, according to the report tabled in state parliament last week.

The investigation concluded “the approach to secluding Adrian has been contrary to law, unreasonable, oppressive and improperly discriminatory” and raised “human rights concerns, including indicators of systemic abuse”.

Police were called and officers used dogs to subdue Adrian because he was “petrified” of the animals, according to staff notes, and in one instance he was found “crying in the foetal position” after one was sent into his unit.

Jeff Smith, the chief executive of People with Disability Australia, told Guardian Australia: “This is an outrageous case of a person with disability being held in solitary confinement for many years, causing immense harm to him.”

Seclusion orders signed ‘retrospectively’

The specialised Wacol facility was built in an overhaul of forensic disability services by Anna Bligh’s Labor government in 2011.

Seclusion orders are designed to protect clients and staff from “imminent physical harm” where no “less restrictive” option is available.

Under the legislation, they must be authorised by a senior practitioner and can only last a maximum of three hours at a time.

Clarke acknowledged staff were not “comfortable breaking seclusion due to concerns for their personal safety” and that authorities considered him a “very challenging individual with complex and dangerous behaviours” who had caused significant damage to the facility.

Still, the ombudsman found authorities had failed to meet the legislative requirements and that the length of time Adrian had “been in seclusion may have significantly harmful effects on his wellbeing”.

Analysis of a portion of the 18,000 orders issued for Adrian contained “a high degree of repetition of words used to describe the presenting risk” and sometimes appeared to be “pre-populated”.

Orders were sometimes “signed by a senior practitioner retrospectively”, according to staff, or issued despite notes showing the risk was “currently low”.

The ombudsman was also concerned that CCTV footage was not retained, as “required by relevant legislation and policies”.

Adrian’s life at the FDS

In his early childhood, Adrian was diagnosed with an intellectual disability and a form of chromosomal disorder and suffered “significant emotional, physical and sexual abuse both at home and by carers in out-of-home care”.

In 2012, he was charged with “serious criminal offences” but found unfit for trial and the charges were dropped.

Adrian was placed in a “seclusion unit that had been specifically constructed” for him that includes a living area, bedroom and shower and toilet, and small concrete undercover yard.

Staff communicate with Adrian through a “narrow horizontal slot through which meals and other items are passed” and will cover the slot, “removing all capacity for human contact” if his behaviour escalates.

On five occasions, he has been charged by police with criminal offences against staff, but the charges were later dismissed, struck out or withdrawn due to his condition.

He also slept for up to six months in a “tent-like structure” he built in his concrete courtyard area “using ropes and a tarp provided by … management for this purpose”.

Adrian built the structure to protect his privacy, but “the mattress inside was putrid and mouldy” and was later removed by the police, the report said.

He now refuses seclusion breaks because of his “lack of self-determination as a person”, with staff concerned for his overall health. It was noted he sometimes misses meals for several days.

Response from authorities

Queensland’s minister for disability services, Coralee O’Rourke, told Guardian Australia she shared the concerns of the ombudsman about Adrian’s case and that the recommendations were under review.

“I am advised that over the past 12 months the FDS has put strategies in place to encourage and enable this client to participate safely in activities outside his rooms to reduce his seclusion and support his rehabilitation,” she said.

O’Rourke said the use of police dogs in the facility was an “operational matter for the Queensland police service” and had been referred to the police commissioner.

She said there were already reforms underway to build staffing capacity and hand more powers to the director of forensic disability, who oversees the system. A search was also underway for a new director and a new administrator of the FDS had also been appointed.

A spokeswoman for the department said it “acknowledges the ombudsman’s concerns about the seclusion of a client”.

“A series of independent clinicians, the mental health court and reviews by the mental health review tribunal have confirmed the ongoing need for detainment due to the risk this client presents to himself and others,” she said.

If a woman joined already pregnant then they just took care of the kid collectively when it was born. They did also have a habit of taking in orphans and the homeless. If somebody joined as a kid, was picked up as an orphan, or was born into it they had to choose when they grew up whether they'd stay or not; needless to say a lot of people decided "no, I'd like to gently caress, thanks" and left.
