thathonkey posted:Sorry if this was posted already but a friend just sent me this mixtape from a guy called MICK JENKINS. I had never heard of him before, but so far this is awesome and the production is right up my alley (lots of jazz influence, sample-heavy etc.): I've found the Water[s] to be my favorite album of the year so far. Trees and Truths is really good also. There's maybe one track that I'd skip on The Water[s], but otherwise it's great throughout which helps, because repeat listenings are required when you're talking about Mick Jenkins.

Calling it a more or less follow-up to Cosmogramma is quite apt. It is pretty much a return to form of the FlyLo stuff that made me a believer a few years back. It has a nice balance between meditative chill and "get the gently caress out of my way on the freeway". It also has a little more soul to it, which fills that avant R&B niche I gravitate towards when in a haze. He also threw a little Captain Murphy in there to cover more bases. Quite a solid album, I'd say.

thathonkey posted:Odd future has and will always suck. Honestly cant believe so many people bought into their hype and genuinely seemed to likeany of their "artists" with the huge exception of frank ocean who is literally the only talented member of the whole group (by the longest shot possible). He makes the tolerating of all the other OF garbage members ive had to endure over the years completely worth it at least. Odd Future is pretty important, actually. Before Tyler, I don't think mainstream America knew that black rappers could be anything but pious hypocrites. I've also noticed a slew of young black skaters, and an overall more creative/individualistic approach to hip hop since Odd Future came into existence. That isn't to say that this all didn't exist before OF, simply that this was brought to the forefront, thanks in no small part to them. To say that Frank Ocean is the only talented member is ridiculous. There's Syd tha Kid/The Internet, The Jet Age of Tomorrow, Domo Genesis, and Mike G (I guess, he hasn't released anything in forever). void_serfer fucked around with this message at 16:48 on Apr 29, 2015 |

Name another black atheist rapper that isn't Greydon Square or maybe Hodgy Beats?thathonkey posted:I think you are greatly overstating their importance and influence. I honestly don't think they changed anything about hiphop (for better or worse) but maybe im just bitter, cynical, and old. I'm not saying that they're super influential or anything like that. I'm simply saying that they're portraying a different aspect of black culture that rarely gets any spotlight. Whether or not that was intentional on their part is irrelevant, because we're having this discussion now. Maybe I went a bit overboard with the creativity part or whatever. void_serfer fucked around with this message at 17:12 on Apr 29, 2015 |
