They could be ad hoc, but if you were of a team that did releases, you would be scheduled for eg "10pm Foo app server 1.15 deployment". Or it could be "that db is running hot, schedule a restart for 10pm tomorrow night". I had many weeks where all 3 maintenance windows were used.

I didn't mention comp or bonus because in my experience, comp is extremely informal and at the merest whim of management, and bonus is explicitly not for hours.

Now: this stuff is not my current job. It's things I've been through in the past, and that I've seen from very close. Though I do have an on call shift now that's only 12 hours. for the 2 weeks (1 week secondary, then primary. But as far as I can tell, this stuff is all pretty common in Silicon Valley ops-land.

The bits about if X then you are non-exempt are intriguing, but basically non-actionable because you gotta lawyer up and take on both the cost and the inevitable firing.

I'm well paid, so it's not like I'm hurting. The "go find another job" scenario would be tricky to execute on unless Google or Facebook wanted me, or I changed industries. The mortgage makes the latter kind of tricky.

The reason I posted this was this article. It drove me crazy that the author never question the insane power that employers have in the US. I'm curious exactly what the limits are elsewhere. I've searched for these kinds of things when emailing my congressperson and the DOL, but failed to find much at all. So here we are.

Thanks again for all the responses, keep them coming.

This article touches even more on the subject. Trigger Warnings: Socialism, Communism, Unionization

It's funny, I have I think only two people on my ignore list and Clam Down is one of them, yet someone almost inevitably quotes his posts for some reason so I've ended up seeing most of his posts anyway.

I'm pondering removing him because I've forgotten why I even added him other than being an idiot Canada fucker constantly spewing useless garbage about how everything in Canada is better which really doesn't help those of us who can't move to Canada, no offense meant of course, Clam Down - anyway I might remove him from my ignore list since I've almost come to like his posts in the kind of "he may be an jerkwad but he's OUR jerkwad" sort of way.

Cool thanks for listening to my inner monologue about irrelevant decisions that don't concern anyone else and were a complete waste of your time (but enough about the daily standup meeting - heyohhhh)

If your config management, or first commands if you're a neanderthal, on any *nix box aren't the following, then you're computering wrong:

code:
add the following to your sudoers file:
Defaults editor=/usr/bin/nano
code:
rm /usr/bin/vi
ln -s /usr/bin/nano /usr/bin/vi
etc.

Didn't get an internal job I went for.

The gist of the feedback was that the manager, who knows me, wanted me but the director, who doesn't know me, perceived me as too inexperienced (I'm qualified by experience rather than education I would argue...) and they need a super star as they are so short staffed, yet only have authority to hire 1 dude right now so they want a superstar... ps unofficially we will probably get to advertise again real soon please apply then wink wink

Reading between the lines, my bosses boss is old buddies with these dudes and we are super busy so it would not be unsurprising if someone said 'hey don't pinch AA right now, we are too busy to lose him' - not to be arrogant about myself but this year is pretty critical in our roadmap for my boss at least and I have the smallest department in our division so it would hurt if I go.

So I just looked at job boards on my lunch today and see something very similar and very appealing (working for the gov, so pension++!) so I figure seeing as I have an up to date CV and so on I'll throw and app in and see what happens. I feel like if I bide my time an opportunity in this company might arise, but if I apply elsewhere and I'm successful then I have just taken control of my own progression so eh think I'm gonna start going for it on a bigger scale.

I feel like writing that out just cleared up my thinking haha

I didn't get an internal because it'd be "too routine" so I'm looking and looking elsewhere now. Unfortunately hard to get higher pay than this org in NEO and stuck with legal "expertise" which means no concrete experience with AWS/Azure as everything is on prem.

I probably need to start looking for a new gig. Getting slowly bored. Done with most of the cool stuff and it’s going to take ages before I get more budget to do new cool stuff.

I can cut our MSP cost by 80% by moving to AWS but management is taking until Q3 to decide if they want too. The ROI is 2 months.

Looking to find some help for a friend here - anyone know a good IT recruiter in the Austin, TX area?

Said friend started her current role as a document control person, many years ago, and now she's pretty much runs doc control for her org. She really enjoys working with her internal customers to try to make document control and its processes work for them. Unfortunately, doc control isn't part of IT there, and yet IT are the admins for the doc control system, whereas my friend is treated as a power user. IT doesn't have anyone who knows the system and has no interest in changing that, so while the needs of the business change periodically, the system is stuck, and it's making my friend miserable. She wants to find a new job either doing doc control for a company that will let her own the system and make constructive changes, or transition to more of a business systems analyst role, helping fit IT processes to business needs.

My gut tells me that she's one of those well-intentioned people who tend to underplay their hand in interviews and talk themselves out of a job. Working with a recruiter who can help sell her to a new employer seems like the best option. I'm just glad she finally admitted that her job sucks and she needs a new one, after years of being the non-goon in a well.

I posted this as the (admittedly vastly more interesting) conversation about AnnoyBot's poll was in full swing, and I wanted to make sure it got seen, at least. Anyone in Austin know a good recruiter?
