I went through what you're all describing back in '06 and stuck around for far, far too long. It's not worth the frustration and pains of mixing company cultures. It really isn't. Start fresh. That's the exact thing I needed to hear and I'm gonna get my rear end in gear too. Not so much a merger here, but I work at a small company and our newest management hires come from corporate backgrounds and they've killed pretty much every little perk that attracted me to my current job (casual dress, flexibility to work from home). You're right, it's not worth the frustration.

Been on the lookout for professional services/consulting type gigs, and found out about a company moving their HQ from San Diego to Dallas. I've got my in person interview coming up and the HR contact told me expect salary of 35-40k for a job that has 75%+ travel. I'm having a hard time believing that's a serious answer, so I will see what the actual consultants have to say. My initial reaction is that is way, WAY low, even for Texas. I am going through culture shock at my current job, but that salary range has to be well below market rate.

Thanks everyone, glad to know I'm not being unreasonable.Dark Helmut posted:The conspicuous lack of "x years of experience required" definitely seems to point to them looking for people right out of school (or close) or people in transition that might be a bit more desperate. If they are saying $35-40, that's low for pretty much any civilized market. Not sure of your experience level, but if you are in the earlier stages of your career it might be a good opp. That's a big point that I'm going to clarify as well when I do go in face to face tomorrow. I've got about a year of applicable experience (I am a consultant for a SaaS company right now) and otherwise 1.5 years in helpdesk/dba type stuff. Starting rate for where I am now varied between 50k-65k, and that's why I was initially surprised.

Update on what happened since I posted this. Got an offer for 40k and they're unwilling to push any higher. Recruiter even mentioned being aware that their salary is below market rate, so how are they expecting to fill these positions Gut tells me to move onward and try somewhere else.

What's a solution architect supposed to be responsible for? I mean other than having an absurdly full calendar, and when I do get them in a meeting, they fumble and stumble in front of the client. Also NippleFloss, I'd like to hear more about NetApp, mind if I contact you over pm?

FWIW I took a look at it and the one that came up for my gmail was a super old password. Based on the grep stuff that I saw, I'm guessing mine got pulled from when HoN/S2 got hacked. To give a personal anecdote, I focus on performing well on the face to face interview; impress the hiring manager/potential colleagues to the point where they'd tell HR "hey, hire this person and do whatever it takes." Then that's when you can say "hey I need help with relocation expenses" Or well, just take the job and cover the cost of moving on your own.

I'm actively hunting in Portland and Dark Helmut is correct. Their job market is definitely skewed towards people who already live there. It's a case where moving there without a job is a horrible idea considering the insane demand for housing as well. I know it's possible to get hired via a Skype interview though it's definitely not the norm. My backup plan is staying in Dallas which isn't a completely terrible consolation.

MC Fruit Stripe posted:So this is probably a silly question but how do you apply for a job and get an office? That seems like such a petty declaration, but I work from home in my perfectly laid out home office where everything is exactly how I want it. I don't need to interview for a new job if they're going to show me to my cubicle, that is a non starter. But how do you even bring it up? "Hi I'd be happy to work for you if there's an office involved" - I've got no idea. I'd count on a cubicle or "open office" type thing for vast majority of positions. The only place I'd worked where everyone was guaranteed an office regardless of tenure was the government. And yeah, wait until a face to face interview to bring that up.

Would it make sense to think about the recognition? My initial reaction is that doing an awesome thing at a so-so company beats doing something decent at an "amazing" company. I walked into one interview and the recruiter met me at the elevator to walk me into the office. He hands me a folder with extra copies of my resume "just in case" and when I caught a glance, it was just my resume but with this horrific header including a tacky logo of the recruiting company So glad I didn't have to use those.

A recruiter independently modifying a CV without my permission or awareness = bad. Beat me to it. I have no problems with being told my contact details will be edited from my resume, and I get why that's important for the recruiter as an agent. In his defense, Helmut and good recruiters communicate that practice ahead of time, but that specific incident where my resume looked like children's coloring book bothered me. Plus, good ones will tell you to add things like "examples of when you used xyz technology" or similar phrases where they can see room for tailoring a resume better for a specific positing.
