Another quick question, I need a way to crack Windows 8.0 passwords for people at this office who are constantly forgetting their windows passwords. Since I didn't set these computers up, none of them have the Admin account enabled for safe mode, I don't have any recovery discs, and there's no other way to reset these passwords I can think of since I'm not familiar with Windows 8 (Other than it's really stupid to use)

Assuming they're all just workgroup computers with no domain or any management, when I need to get into a local account I:
Boot computer with a boot disk to get a cmd console or similar (linux works too)
Navigate to the C:\Windows\System32
Rename utilman.exe to something else, utilman2.exe
Copy cmd.exe to utilman.exe
Reboot
Activate the ease of access button on the log on screen, this will open a command prompt
Use the net command to change the password - ie. net user "bob" password - replacing bob and password as neccessary.
Reboot and login with the new password
At some point you should restore utilman.exe back to the original program
Tell the idiots to get on a domain.

Jesus. I do $50 CAD on groceries every few days, and that's mostly vegetables / grains. And that doesn't cover what I spend on lunches.

So we're looking at downgrading our helpdesk software because our current setup is more expensive and more overkill than we really require. We have some vendors showing us there poo poo, and I was going to suggest throwing Spiceworks into the mix and compare them all.

I'm under the impression that for basic helpdesk software, they're pretty well regarded. Is that the case?

Haven't really used Bing but I just assume that if it isn't in the first 5 results on Google, it doesn't actually exist. Mostly because after the first few results Google just picks random poo poo out of the air that has nothing to do with what you searched for.

A while back I went through the MCITP self-paced training books, and you can sign up for the exams at a whole bunch of testing centres - even my rural area has one not too far. I'm not sure if they're any more up to date than Win7/Server 2008R2 though, and self-paced books always have their own issues.

If my employer wants to pay me to do something that's not part of my job description but something I enjoy as a hobby, I'd do it. I don't do lockpicking, but I've been repairing stereos and AV equipment here, which saves them money and it's something I don't mind spending work-hours doing.

I also work in a reasonable place and wouldn't get poo poo on if I let that side stuff slide while important work was going on, and if they were a priority they wouldn't heap a bunch of other stuff onto me at the same time.

I think it's reasonable that the employee is expected to stay up to date on the technology for their position, in so far as keeping up to date with version differences, standards and practices, etc. However, if the employer notices a weakness, wants to add responsibilities to the position, or wants to go through a bigger technology change, they should put resources available to the employee for training.

That would have been roughly 500 hours of commuting time a year, or almost 3 full weeks of sitting in your car. I honestly don't know how people can do that sort of thing.

So a local business wants me to help out with some projects as a consultant. Most of the time I do stuff like this it's quick, under the table type deals where the conversation starts of as "I'll give you $X to help out with this." As for this one, I have no idea how to price myself. Anyone have any pointers on the sort of things to consider when coming up with a number?

We recently purchased Netsight and Purview from Extreme, but frankly its not a good monitoring solution, its a good management platform.

I've been playing with PRTGs 100 free sensors version for the last couple of days and really like it so far. Solarwinds seems to be too much for what I want, and frankly their sales tactics are super off-putting.

I'm using NagiosXI. It's... functional. It works. I guess it was cheap as well, with their education pricing. Configuring it can be a pain in the rear end, and god help me if I need to decommission something.

You stick the narrow end through the rack hole, catch the "leg" of the rack nut and just pull it through.

My toolkit also includes a dull table knife for various poking and prying tasks.

I used to use a flat screwdriver until I saw one of these in a bag of rack nuts and misc stuff. None of the experienced IT people knew what it was, but I figured if it comes with the poo poo, it's used for something. I just took it out of the bag and started popping poo poo off the rack, and it blew them away. Those tools are just so much better than trying to use anything else.

Well my boss is resigning. That's bad news because he was completely hands off, and mostly just dealt with departmental direction and administrative duties. The it dept here runs smooth as ice and we don't need much managing.

He only worked part time since he workload wasn't that demanding. Now the board wants to hire a full-time replacement, externally (they've been burned by quite a few internal promotions lately). Their ideal candidate is someone with the appropriate management and education experience, as well as my skillset.

They want to run the department with three full-time people, but early in the process it looks more like I should be looking for a new job.
