Fear Her has a few really really dumb bits (ala Aliens of London, Love and Monsters) but unlike Aliens of London or Love and Monsters it's so loving bland that you can't pick out the diamonds in the rough and go "Oh, well at least it tried." Being bland and awful is worse than just being awful.

I actually have more respect for love and monsters than fear her, because at least that episode differentiated itself somehow. It tried some stuff that hadn't been seen yet on the revival. it failed horribly and is a mess, but at least there was some sort of vision behind it. fear her is just everyone phoning it in.

the biggest problem with DW is that the premise of the show alows it to pretty much do whatever it wants, but they rarely do. You can set an episode wherever and whenever you want and do lots of crazy stuff, but most of the time we get a lot of running from daleks in hallways with lots of pipes.

Every time I watch this episode it gets a little dusty when this exchange rolls around.

The only thing i remember about these episodes are those emotional amy moments, because it's actually one of the few DW episode that are somewhat emotional that work really well. And Gillan does a great jub. Usually it all falls flat and I just watch the show for it's absurdness.

Ambrose is terrible in the previous episode too.

Rory: is everyone okay?
Ambrose: yeah, I'M fine.
10 minutes later.
Ambrose: has anyone seen my son?

And why is there a meals on wheels there? it's specifically stated that no one lives there besides her, and all the workers travel in for the drilling.

[*] On the other hand I really loved the River Song reveal of being Amy's daughter, since it colors every previous interaction they had and was a magnificently accomplished twist. The River confession makes me want to rewatch all of the Series Five and Six episodes that I've seen up to now with that knowledge in mind because it's a Face of Boe-esque reveal from a writer who knows how to actually foreshadow stuff, so I bet there's a bunch of hints in the previous episodes, specific interactions Amy and River had, that I simply didn't pick up on. Oh, and I don't really care about the potential creepiness of The Doctor and River hooking up because that like always happens in every time travel narrative ever and I still really love Fire Emblem: Awakening despite having my main marry Lucina. I mean...yeah it's gross when you think about it for a second, so luckily I just refuse to ever think about it.

I feel like this is a good time to remind everyone that RTD wrote "Rose", the Aliens of London two-parter, "Boom Town", "The Parting of the Ways", "New Earth", "Love and Monsters", "Utopia", "Voyage of the Damned", and "Planet of the Dead"

he also wrote every single other finale for every season he showran, almost all of which you, collectively, the thread, spent much time and many posts hating whenever they passed (outside of "Doomsday", everyone seemed to like that one)

on the other hand RTD wrote "The Runaway Bride" and "Gridlock" and "Midnight" and "Turn Left" and "Utopia" and "End of Time, Part Two"

doesn't change the fact that moffat is terrible in a new, exciting and different way!

yeah, it's a very weird comparison, but I agree with the criticism. DW gets away with a lot of bad writing, due to it being covered up by general sillyness, fast pace and other stuff.

I saw one episode once. His daughter was dating someone he didn't like because he was a liberal or something, so of course it turned out he was only dating her to be able to sneak into dadmans shop and spraypaint a stuffed bear for some reason. They caught him and forced him to work in the shop. It was all really unfunny unoriginal poo poo and i was suprised they still make stock sitcoms like that.

Rings is bad. The first 10 to 15 minutes is okay, but then it falls apart with the doctor waving his magic wand around, riding a hovercraft with lovely effects, some vampire guy shows up and disappears, the sun from super mario 3 is there, the bad guy is boasted into submission from the doctor and his companion, the pacing is awful, the plot is just bullet points on the script where we jump from one to the next with no build-up or reason, the song is boring, clara is just a prolonged Moffat masturbation session with no character, bleh. The worst Smith episode.

which affects all the other parts to a degree where it doesn't matter if they're good or not imo.

E: to clarify; Rings, like a lot of other episodes from season 7, seems like it was a 70 minute long episode cut down to 50. So all the potentially fun parts are somewhat disjointed and just comes off like random stuff.

I enjoy Mark Gatiss' contributions to Who and nearly always do because there's a workhorse air of utter competence to his stories. People deride his episodes as "boring" when they're at worst "pleasant", and there usually seems to be a real lack of respect for how impressive it is to turn in an episode that is technically proficient. I can understand not specifically liking his output - if what you're going for is the highly conceptual (Moffat) or emotional (Davies) episodes I could see where Gatiss doesn't do anything for you - but this weird sort of disregard and sneering derision Gatiss' episodes get befuddles me, and speaks more to how easy people think it is to write television scripts.

being really good at being mundane doesn't really make it more interesting.
