and actually tbh ive never been satisfied with the idea that the town was was punishing James and prefer the theory that it was trying to help him accept his sins so from that interpretation here's never been a decent "punishment" story.

the evidence in SH2 suggests that the place that became silent hill was like a sacred place that the native people would go to to work out their issues and it was all the atrocities committed o the land later on that twisted it into what it is today. I like to think the town is still trying to help people but has forgotten how, essentially as lost as the protagonists.
