My bank is so awesome with fraud prevention that I can spend 3 weeks in a hotel in another state and charge that to my cc but I get home and buy an xbox at the gamestop 3 miles from my house and they lock my account for 3 days.

Citibank sent us a letter that in April or may of 2015 if we don't have something like 10k in our checking account they are charging us $25 a month lol If I have a spare 10k I'm putting it in something that gets loving interest; not sitting in a goddamn checking account you baboons It is going to be a major pain in the rear end to switch all my utilities and work stuff, and also now my payment history on the website will be useless as I won't be able to log in, and I also liked that I could pull money out of a Citibank in Germany if I wanted , but gently caress em. I use your debit card which gives you money, you borrow my money and I get no interest, and they are going to charge me $25 a month for the privilege of what again exactly? That's a goddamn extra bill, same as I pay for my fuckin internet . Literally shaking (my fist)

checking accounts are outdated as all gently caress. how often do you actually need to write a check anymore? you can do it all via online banking or debt card. if you still use a checking account and pay for the privilege

Borrowed Ladder posted:How does anyone ever overdraft wtf I have my money spread over several accounts and one of them is just for non-necessities & I never have more than $1k in it at a time because I've decided that's responsible or something. During the short period of time I was with a bank instead of a credit union I bought a dress and the bank's computer system hosed it up & charged me for the same dress three times and then I had to spend over an hour on the phone explaining to the bank that no I didn't buy three $400 dresses a split second apart because that's literally impossible & obviously an error and just contact the goddamn retailer & then after removing the excess charges they were still going to charge me for the overdraft because I was supposed to anticipate them having lovely technology & then I had to argue with them until they were like "We will remove the fee as a one time courtesy" like they were doing me a favor for cleaning up their own mess. That was all I needed to go back to my credit union. I remember when you used to have to qualify for a credit union, now I think anyone can join one so I don't know why everyone doesn't. ded posted:checking accounts are outdated as all gently caress. how often do you actually need to write a check anymore? you can do it all via online banking or debt card. Credit unions are required by law to have some sort of defined field of membership. Usually it shouldn't be too hard to find one you qualify for, but you still have to qualify somehow. I just piggyback off my military father and thus can get into some decent ones.

That defined field has been greatly broadened over the years. For example, my current credit union used to require you to be a teacher working in the county or a family member of a teacher that has an account but now the requirement is to be a resident of the state the credit union is in. So, yeah there's still a requirement but come on. Some credit unions will be like you have to donate $5 to our charity & now we're all philanthropists & that's why we are all in the same credit union.

My bank not only doesn't charge if you don't maintain a certain balance but will refund any atm fees at the end of the month. I have an account at a credit union too but they're less convenient. I want my girlfriend to switch from Boa but I guess she's just used to it.

Yeah, I'd have to convince my parents to switch away from BofA, and maybe also start using auto debit instead of mailing paper checks. Of course, my mom loves that level of control that only knowing the current checkbook balance ahead of time, drafting out a check, and mailing it out within a few days via a post office drop can afford. Certainly, with auto debit, you would have to worry that you may not have enough in the account the moment they try to take the money, then get hit with overdraft fees. Instead of, like, automatically debiting your other accounts.

Borrowed Ladder posted:How does anyone ever overdraft wtf No poo poo right, aside from the one crazy person who got charged 30 times for a pair of socks or whatever here is a tip for you poors. It's okay to spend money you don't actually have, that's when you use the CREDIT CARD and not the DEBIT CARD. And as others have stated, I don't get hit with checking fees because I have multiple accounts, many of them with sums over the minimum for a fee. I have nothing against credit unions but this bank account is older than some goons and I aint spending an afternoon signing your fancy papers.
