Early last night had been the best night in the recent campaign for your platoon. The soldiers assigned to gather food had found some meaty buffalo, which when combined with nearby mushrooms had come together into a delicious stew, much better than the rations you've been forced to eat the last couple weeks. On top of that, the sky was clear and the breeze was comfortable. There wasn't even any sign of the enemy. You even had something to lean back against because of the nearby ruins. Of course it was too good to be true.

Just as everyone was settling in for the night, the lookouts let out the cry that the enemy was approaching and fast. You scrambled from your bedrolls and grabbed any weapons nearby. Not that it mattered. It was a one-sided battle from the start. The cavalry charged in, unrivaled on the flat plains you were fighting in. Fourteen of your allies were killed fighting, with another eleven being captured and carted away to who knows where? You all survived by running or by skill or even by pure chance. But the point is, you survived.

Now as morning dawns, only fifteen members of your platoon still stand as the rain falls around you. Among you, the highest rank belongs to Sergeants Sorkaktani, Tel, and Rock. Lieutenant Mathers had been captured during the raid and carted off. Off in the distance, they split the prisoners, taking Mathers away from the rest to get information from him. The rest had been taken towards the imperial camp to be used as prisoners of war.

Now a choice must be made. If you run, you might make it to the force transporting Mathers and be able to rescue him, saving your commanding officer and keeping intelligence out of the enemy's hands. Another option is to catch up to the other group of prisoners, nearly doubling your number if you can rescue all of them. Or you could try to attack the imperial camp while their main attack force hasn't returned and cut off their lifeline.

Behold My Magnificence!
Quinton insists rather loudly that we must rescue our fellow soldiers. Mathers is a strong, true, patriot! He will never break, and he'd want us to rescue the most people we can!

These assertions have only a passing resemblance to reality. But it's an ok option and he's very vocal about it.

But People have fears that beasts do not. Questions, too.
Abesh and Camille looked to Knock on this - they're soldiers, decisions like this were out of their pay grade - leaving Knock, once again, to shoulder the tough questions. He sighed, rubbing mud off his brow. "You know what, as much as we need those prisoners, we need our CO. Mathers has been good enough to us, we need to pay back the favour. Besides, he'll know what to do next."

WHY YOU GOTTA BREAK A BROS HEART
"Old man Mathers'll keep. It's not like he knows anything really important that they don't know already anyway. The fuckers already know where we're goin', where we came from, and how many of us there are, so what's the point in rushing to spring him? Nah, what we oughtta do is get those other poor fucks loose while we can, get the resta the platoon back together before we worry about hitting those fuckers in the sack right back."

Rock spat out the pebble she'd been sucking on, stunning a passing lizard before giving it a nudge with her boot.

"'Sides, we can just sweat the fuckers for where they'd take Mathers and how they'd keep him. That's uh... operational intelligence isn't it?"

"We need more people in order to survive next time they attack." Sorkhatani says as she munches on a haunch of meat, looking over to Rock and nodding at her plan. "Can't get paid if we are dead, and Mathers is only one person." Her young recruits, meanwhile, are standing guard near the camp, Mustapha nervously watching for enemy troops while Yanyan leans on his shoulder.

I just realized what I typed may have given the wrong impression. Despite the three of them being superior officers, everyone else can put their two cents in. They don't dictate the order of things just because they spent XP differently than you did.
