I don't understand why they can't just handle these things with a fade to black instead of inventing weird new plot devices. Then again, I don't really understand why the VN market apparently requires sex scenes in the first place. :iiam:

Maybe if we introduced Japan to Crysis and started a culture of pc building spergs dumping thousands on triple GTX Titans, an octo-core Intel i7, etc.

At least they would stop funding lovely anime.

Except that might also stop funding for good anime.

I'm rather conflicted right now.

Ever read 87 Clockers?

Faithful and enjoyable are entirely different axes that have nothing to do with each other, even if you've enjoyed the source material. Personally I thought this would have been a good opportunity to edit the story down, but apparently the director disagreed.

They did edit it down, though. Basically all the parts that led seorin to make jokes about lesbians were cut, for example.

Just to check, but was Archer bluffing when he said (UBW spoilers)Gae Bolg would have killed him, right? Later on in UBW he whips out Rho Aius against Gae Bolg and successfully blocks it, so I don't see why he wouldn't have done that if Shirou hadn't interrupted the fight.

Rho Aius only protects against the long-range version of Gae Bolg, not the short-range version.

Well the dumb porn scenes are part of their original characterization and let's be real, it's not like "haughty bitch who secretly wants to be dominated by a man" isn't a stereotype that is uncommon in this kind of stuff.

That's still not an accurate characterization of Rin, though.

Takeuchi is genuinely a pretty creepy guy. His discussion of the origins of Hisui and Kohaku from Tsukihime is, er, interesting (although I'm inclined to agree with Nasu that he's BSing at least a little here): http://tsukikan.com/misc/kanwatsukihime/09.html

Also relevant because Nasu seems to acknowledge Takeuchi's brand-savvy "ideas guy" role while making fun of him for it.

It's been a while since I read the VN, and I don't remember a detail I'm curious about. Spoilers, obviously.

Is Archer lying when he says he doesn't remember who he is, or does he actually not remember until later? (I know who Archer is, I just don't remember this detail.)

Minor Hollow Ataraxia spoilers: It's unclear. Shirou speculates in Hollow Ataraxia that Heroic Spirits are incapable of outright lying, but there's probably a counterexample in Extra or whatever to prove that they can lie just fine.

Edit: I just remembered that Servants lie outright in Apocrypha a couple times. Obviously Nasu didn't have that in mind when writing Archer's dialogue in Stay Night, but it still seems relevant.

I actually find Kirei as a bad financial administrator way more funny. Also, the side effect was making Rin greedy, stingy and generally obsessed by money. "Good educational experience" indeed.

Hollow Ataraxia suggests that Rin was like that even as a young child, though.

I think Shirou being awful is kind of the narrative that people have latched onto of what the story is "about". Of course it's true in many ways, but people exaggerate how awful or ~broken~ he is way too much. He's got some wrong ideas, sure, but a lot of it is that he's a non-mage thrust into a war that's kind of bullshit by people who are kind of bullshitting him.

Actually I get the feeling that a lot of character interpretations are the result of Nasu saying a thing which is true, and readers taking it way out of proportion. The VN goes over Shirou's ideals compared to Archer's and Kiritsugu's a bunch but it's not like that's all that's going on.

There's a tendency to exaggerate about Shirou's characterization, yes. An example is people taking Ayako's line about Shirou never laughing at her jokes to mean that Shirou has no sense of humor whatsoever, which is simply not true.

Blu/Purple/Green hair colors are usually considered shades of black/dark hair.

Yeah, they're not "really" those hair colors. Hollow Ataraxia has a character with hair described as red but drawn as purple, for example.

This actually leads to a minor plot hole involving one character's hair color, but it would be a big spoiler to explain it.

Not to mention all of the Tsukihime jokes in Carnival Phantasm kind of suck anyway, and/or have nothing to do with the actual plot.

This should probably be discussed in the Type-Moon thread, but this is also true of the humor in Kagetsu Tohya, Melty Blood, etc. The characters in Tsukihime are either too grimdark to be easily made funny (and thus get changed into something completely different), or they have a low-hanging-fruit "funny" trait that gets exaggerated and run into the ground.

In all honesty though, do they use hair spray or something? I wasn't aware that they had hair spray in 600 +/- B. C.

And more importantly, why is Kojirou's hair purple. I can understand Caster, since she's foreign, but Kojirou?

It's just drawn that way. It's supposed to "really" be some other color.

Taiga is taken as a hostage yes, though in the VN they come home from the date and it goes down at the household instead of the bridge IIRC.

I think it's less command seal theft as a whole and more "I ended your contract and formed a new one immediately" which would probably replenish the lost three? It's kind of fuzzy how switching Masters works.

Normally you have to use the Command Spells you already have to form a new contract like that. Caster's ability to just make new Command Spells is kind of bullshit.
