Strike Suit games are sorta like that. You have a fighter ship that transforms into a robot that blows stuff up extremely well, but you only have a limited amount of energy (you get more by blowing stuff up). Infinity is just score attack I think, Zero has a pretty bland story but some decently cool levels.

You should look into MAME because arcades are filled with classic STGs, you can go anywhere from early Scramble and Galaxian type stuff to the Star Wars game to, uh, Giga Wing.

Freeware game 3030 recently had a remake/re-release. I've played it a bit, seems OK. Game did crash when I tried to take a picture of a planet for a mission, but it autosaves frequently so no big deal.

VideoGames posted:x:rebirth should be called x:stillborn Yeah. They had the noble goal of streamlining the X series which has a somewhat clunky UI and is just generally not that easy to get into. They did just about everything wrong though and ended with a completely awful game. Based on their track record it will probably significantly improve with free patches but the initial launch left an extremely bad taste in everyone's mouths.

they're not they intentionally gently caress the physics to make it more fun rather than realistic. you can turn flight assist off but it's still not full newtonian, just changes some of the flight model. like flipping 180 will bleed speed slowly even if you turn engines off and yawing is really slow compared to pitch and roll, it's supposed to feel more like a plane

Apparently there are more space shooty games than I thought existed, not too bad for a genre that died in '99.KoldPT posted:freelancer alpha one dash one I've played that game so much that phrase is permanently burned into my brain. Chris Roberts can make half of a good game and then walk away after wasting millions of dollars so that someone else can come in and tie up everything into a coherent package. Still amazed that it plays even half as well as it does after the development hell it went through. And I wanted to like starlancer because it was literally ww2 in space but holy gently caress it was loving 90% escort missions and Erin Roberts seems to hate the player because a lot of those missions are balls hard because of terrible mission design. it had a cool atmosphere though.

It depends on how you design the space ships, but generally it's a bad a design decision. Pseudo-Newtonian like Freespace or whatever are a pretty great idea because it's intuitive enough for the player to immerse in, but "gamey" enough to enhance gameplay.
