Hello and welcome to Gate: Thus the JSDF Fought There, Japan's answer to Frank Miller and Tom Clancy's Fusion Dance result, and possibly the most vile comic I've ever read. And continue to read What the gently caress is Gate? Well if you ask Mangahelpers: quote:One day in the 21st century, a gate opened in the middle of the Ginza district of Tokyo. Out of the gate poured soldiers and strange creatures, and they soon made Ginza look like an image of hell. The gate apparently connected Japan to another world, a world with a militant empire and many supernatural creatures. The Japanese Self-Defense Force decided to send a small group, led by a soldier who's also an otaku, into the other world on a reconnaissance mission. They're meant to learn what they can about the empire (and its plans), the world, and the people. That doesn't sound too ba- ... There's the obligatory implicit Nanking denial too (And so, so much more)! So Gate then. Gate started life as a series of webnovels written by an ex-JSDF grunt for his fellow right-wing loser friends. It then migrated in, to my understanding, this order: Webnovels->Actual Novels->Manga->Light Novels. In English, we are basically just concerned with the manga. The best part? If you believe the moonreaders, every version has actually REDUCED the amount of garbage in this thing per editor request, so what we're getting is what has survived two filtering processes. It's horrifically violent in ways that disturb me despite having gone through such lovely marches through the roses like Berserk and Parasyte, I have no idea what magazine lets it get away with the absurd levels of nonsense, it's CONSTANTLY sexist and racist, and literally any time it mentions anything related to domestic Japanese or international politics it gets everything wrong (at one point, the Japanese PM seriously considers to himself that Russia will nuke Japan to protect its national resource market). So why do you keep reading it then? Well first of all I read it because the idea of Earth being permanently nailed to a low power fantasy setting fascinates me (not that Gate delivers on any of that potential of course), but beyond that, if you like trainwrecks, I CHALLENGE YOU to find me one more insane than this. Characters I'll add these later as soon as I can get half decent portraits, spoilers: you will probably hate nearly all of them and the Fantasy Roman Empire's princess is named Pina Colada. Mordja posted:There is a 100% chance that I won't read any of this manga, so please post the most pages you can find, context unnecessary. TIA. The context usually makes them worse, I find. There's only so much I can post. One must enter the fog themselves to uncover the horror and majesty that is Gate: Thus the JSDF Fought There. The two newest chapters are 40 and 41, with focus on the ongoing subplot that I feel I can describe as... let's say the story Lars von Trier would make about the Viera from FF12.

Well I mean, in my ideal world it'd be a political drama, but dragons getting blown up with rocket launchers is inherently cool on its own. Either way if only it could be... anything other than what it is.

I had no idea Mahouka even took place on Earth. Weird.pentyne posted:Surprisingly very little. The main normal world antagonists are the opposing Japanese political party who are portrayed as blatantly stupid and determined to harm Japan. My favorite subplot in Gate is how all those nasty civilian politicians are constantly being obstructive in some way, so it's up to the wily and heroic military to subvert and undermine them at every turn. You know, for the good of the people!

pentyne posted:It's amazing that for a country like Japan which is constitutionally barred from having a military has so many people obsessed with the idea of Japan's (fictional) military being some awesome unbeatable force that embarrasses the USA/China/Russia at every turn. Well in reality the "self-defense" force actually IS one of the most well equipped, well trained armed forces in the world (Japan has the 8th highest defense budget), but what military otaku don't understand is that it really is geared, in terms of equipment and training, towards cooperation with other countries for defense. They seem to think that a big military automatically means big force projection, which just isn't the case. Of course this isn't really relevant in the case of something like Gate which is completely batshit right from the outset (Japan would turn control of a hot potato like this over to the international community in a goddamn heartbeat). What the hell was cut out if this? 7c Nickel posted:Like many others, I really liked the concept, but I had to drop this poo poo about the time the evil anti-military harpy(non fantasy kind) embarrassed herself on national TV while attempting to undermine our noble JSDF heroes.

It is 100% possible to still have tension in a one-sided military situation. Just make the military situation not the main conflict vs political and economic wheeling and dealing or personal struggles. The problem is Gate's author isn't sane or skilled enough to do this well.

The Empire rules the continent, other powers are vassals to it, like Eyepatch King. The whole reason the Empire sent the Vassal Kingdom army into Altus was so they could suffer comparable losses to what the Empire did at the start, neutering them. It's actually kind of clever, another thing wasted by its being in Gate.

I wouldn't recommend looking too hard for stuff about the original novels, because you can tell the ending of the series by looking at the cover and title of the last book.

The scenario itself is ludicrous because it portrays the other countries as weird thieves who are out to steal the visitors in order to enter into negotiations with Pina, which makes no sense because Japan is required by international law to not interfere with diplomatic meetings and their presence in Japan isn't a secret (they were on live TV). America doesn't need to send the SF, nor does anyone else, they can send loving interns out of their embassies if they want and Japan's not allowed to stop them.

Political intrigue is more interesting than watching low fantasy forces get repeatedly trashed. But if you know nothing about politics, you shouldn't try to write about it. That's the bottom line.

Idk I would say the digital revolution/information revolution/whatever we've settled on calling it is still more impressive than I Threw Enough Bodies At The Wall To Make Myself A Large Headstone. The bronze age is fascinating, especially when you get up to the pre-collapse period, and of course we stand on the shoulders of giants and all that, but we are in fact living in the pinnacle of human achievement right now. All of which has little bearing on the obvious silliness of late antiquity forces being blown apart by choppers and artillery of course.
