I liked a lot of what .NET had to offer when I last tried it out but it always bugged me that it was p. much tied to Windows despite being "cross platform." Now that it will support Linux and Mac as well it can be used for serious work. Is this a new era for Microsoft?

write once run anywh-this application requires the dot net runtime version [xyz] for your operating system. please go to https://www.microsoft.com/updates/dotnet/runtime/other.aspx and download the the dot net runtime installer and support libraries, version [xyz]. when installing you may see a message about unsigned binaries, please select "run anyway", then enter your administrator password. after installing retry this application.

lol a .NET release of Office would probably have to include a full blown ia32 emulator to run some backend crap they don't know how to rewrite

reasons this is cool: better support for deploying ASP.NET MVC apps on linux. using c#, which everyone says is the bees knees, without going near windows. mono/xamarin can merge in ms code to improve compatibility. can write cross-platform apps in a better language than java.
