"What we're dealing with...
is us! Those things look just like us!"

"Speak for yourself, I couldn't look that bad on a bet."

Adventure Box is a free-to-play fantasy RPG crossed with a city-building game, that uses voxel graphics and plays in a web browser. You play as the heroic leader of a small village surrounded by enemies and monsters, and it is your mission to rid the land of these dangers. This allows you to grow your village and turn it into a town, then a city, and eventually a huge empire! Since the game is browser-based there is no need to download or install anything, and you’ll be able to invite friends to join your adventures by sharing a web link.

Adventure Box is being developed by Happy Landlord, a small indie game company spread across Stolkholm, Paris and London. (Including me, I’m one of the Brits.) The closed beta is planned to go live in late March 2015, depending on the Kickstarter campaign achieving its funding goal, with the game's full release scheduled for December 2015.

A VOXEL GAME... HAHAHA IT'S JUST A MINECRAFT RIP-OFF

Adventure Box uses voxel graphics (everything is made from blocks), so of course the visual style is similar to Minecraft, Cube World and 3D Dot Heroes. Unlike Minecraft you don't mine for rocks or chop down trees, and you don't build houses a brick at a time.

Adventure Box’s core gameplay is a classic sword-and-sorcery RPG. You start by creating a character and choosing his/her backstory, player class and attributes. You then explore the world, talk to friendly NPCs, do quests, defeat enemies, earn loot and level up your character.

There’s also the Sim City aspect of the game, where you place houses and fortifications using a menu system. You unlock new buildings according to your level and which quests you have completed. Putting certain buildings next to each other grants bonuses and increase the chances of inhabitants following certain career paths or attracting special characters to your town.

The exploration and building parts of the game weave into each other, so cities and characters become reflections of each other. The style of your buildings is affected by your choices and actions... magical or steampunk, peaceful or military, bright and fair or dark and corrupt. If you become an evil necromancer then your village could become a dark, sinister fortress.

:siren: CLICK HERE TO PLAY THE DEMO! :siren:

http://preview.adventurebox.com/

The free demo runs in a web browser (works best in Google Chrome) and shows some early gameplay and the dark, scary atmosphere at the start of the game. It's mainly intended to demonstrate the engine and browser-based technology, so at the moment you can't hurt enemies and they can't hurt you. Just wander around a bit and have some fun firing off magic spells.

CONTROLS:
  • Move forward, backward, left, right: WSAD
  • Turn head: MOUSE
  • Jump: SPACEBAR
  • Sprint: SHIFT
  • Spells: ATTACK(in the demo you are a mage with magical attacks)
  • Switch Spells: Numbers 1 and 2
  • Fly: F (a useful cheat for in case you get stuck somewhere)

:siren: SIGN UP TO ALPHA TEST THE MODDING TOOLS! :siren:

There will be a set of modding tools, called “Adventure Box Labs”, which will allow fans to build their own worlds and design RPG adventures that can be shared online. There is a “Labs Signup” box on the main AdventureBox.com website which will allow you to already alpha test a very early prototype of the modding tools, including terrain generation and placing buildings and objects. There are currently over 2000 people alpha testing.

The menu system for placing buildings gives a little preview of how the city-building aspect will work in the main game, except that you have access to unlimited buildings.

The fact that you can edit the terrain makes it run a bit slower than the main game demo. Eventually the modding tools will be released as a separate paid-for download rather than running through the browser.

SO WHY VOXEL GRAPHICS?

The voxel aesthetic frees small game developers from the need to invest huge amounts of time and money into developing lots of artwork, and can instead focus on designing and programming features and gameplay.

In a game with "realistic" graphics, creating a monster would require concept art, then 3d modelling work, then a texture artist would have to skin it, and then it would need to be animated. But Adventure Box's blocky voxel graphics allow the same person to do the concept art and then build the monster himself by putting together coloured cubes, and it is then game-ready unless it needs some custom animations. This also makes it far easier for fans to mod the game and build their own adventures, as anyone can design their own characters, objects and locations by putting blocks together like Lego.

SO THE MOD TOOLS WILL COST MONEY, BUT THE MAIN GAME WILL BE FREE... HOW WILL THIS MAKE MONEY? THERE HAD BETTER BE NO PAY-TO-WIN CRAP

There shouldn't be any pay-to-win problems as multiplayer will be cooperative rather than competitive (at least in the initial release of the game). But people do hate it if they can't progress without paying for extra content. Everyone that plays Adventure Box should get a full, satisfying experience. In the free game there will be a large variety of locations and quests and you will be constantly rewarded with goodies and loot. There will also be extra optional quests and adventures available as paid-for expansion packs. For example, you could pay to add an enormous haunted castle or a goblin-infested village to the world, providing several extra hours of gameplay and some unique rewards.

For players that lack patience there will be options to buy weapons or items. There will be ways to earn everything in-game, without grinding. Some items will be quest rewards, others will be random loot. Think Team Fortress 2, a free game that that gives all players a good selection of basic weapons, and also has vast number of alternative weapons (and gazillions of hats!) that can be found by playing the game normally, but can also be bought from the store if there's something you want straight away. There will also be ways to earn store currency by playing the game, so everyone will be able to occasionally treat themselves to something special without paying extra.

As well as charging for the mod tools, additional revenue will be generated by a paid-for Adventure Box app for phones and tablets that will allow people to continue playing on the move rather than just on their PC or Mac.

BROWSER GAMES ARE ALL CRAPPY FLASH GAMES FOR CASUALS

No downloads, no installations, Adventure Box runs in your HTML5 enabled browser. It’s not massively demanding – it’s a voxel game, not Crysis – but it does have modern 3D graphics and shaders and is far more sophisticated than most browser-based games, so don't expect it to run on an old office PC intended for emails and spreadsheets.

Adventure Box’s engine is far more sophisticated than other voxel games and the cubes have properties and physics. For example water can freeze to ice, or evaporate. The landscape has dynamic weather and changing climates. Streams will flow downhill according to the shape of the terrain. Extreme temperatures will melt rock into lava, in fact for some reason there are three different types of lava.

Adventure Box is a couple of weeks into a 6-week Kickstarter campaign. There are a number of rewards including special in-game items, unique characters, and real physical merchandise.

The Kickstarter reward tiers range between £5 and £3000 in British pounds. (Though of course you can choose to manually pledge as little as £1.) Pledging £10 ($15.67) or more gets you access to the closed beta that starts in March, as well as pre-ordering the iOS/Android app version of the game, some unique items, and £5 worth of store currency. Beta testers will be able to have a say about aspects of the game's development by giving feedback in the private forums, as well as participating in polls.

Fans that pledge at least £15 ($23.50) will pre-order and beta test the downloadable modding tools. Pledging higher amounts will get you various special characters, pets, and unique variants of weapons that are only available to Kickstarter backers. For example, £50 gets you a set of special "Ghost Hunter" player characters that come with unique unlimited-use versions of the Ghost Trap and Ghost Lantern items. Alternatively you can choose the "Magician Pack" that gets you a cloak of invisibility and torches that detect nearby enemies... or pledge £75 to get both.

The higher reward tiers include stuff like getting to name characters, NPCs or weapons, unique styles of building for your city, creating sound effects for a character or creature, designing a character or creature, or even appearing in the game as a player model or an NPC.
