I don't think there is a single character in this show I don't like. Everyone is awesome.

Except for Rackham. He's a few levels above that :dukedog:

And RIP Captain Ned. I guess this show isn't strictly sticking to history after all.

In my opinion, Eleanor Guthrie's options are:
Easy way: chill at fort until Ned leaves for pirating then issue orders that his ship be sunk on sight should it return.
Better way: Pay someone to kill Ned, put Ned's severed head on pike outside office or at docks as warning to the next person to try and threaten her.
Most effective but dangerous way: Invite Ned into office and then surprise him with pistol(s) hidden under desk. Severed head on pike.
Way show will probably go for: Some convoluted scheme involving Vane stealing Ned's white woman for himself that leads to a confrontation between the two. Probably complicated by Flint returning to port. Takes all season and doesn't involve Ned's head on a pike.

Well that's what I get for underestimating the show, and Vane's ability to be so good at piracy as to steal my idea. Too bad for Eleanor Guthrie that she didn't show up with a big bag of money to pay Vane to do that, then the sign would have said "I angered Eleanor Guthrie" and she would have been in a much better political position.

Still happy with how things turned out though. Now I'm not sure how to call the next story though, since the obvious solution would be for both Flint and Vane to just agree that neither wants Vane in charge of the fort and they both have to skip out of town to go make a bunch of money.

I HAVE THE ETIQUETTE OF STIFF AND THE PERSONALITY OF A GIANT CUNT.
Eleanor should just arrange a contest. The crew who brings back the most gold after the next trip takes over the city. With Flint's and Vane's luck, they'll never get that resolved.

Alternative: winner is Rackham, with some piddly sum.

They're mixing all sorts of pirate crews from the era, Low doesn't become a pirate until six years after when the show is set. Henry Jennings, Black Sam Bellamy and Charles Vane are sort of the only pirates actually active at the time, Vane's first real act of piracy was capturing the remaining cargo left on the Urca site half a year after it sank.

I won't be surprised if Rackham and co. learn the location of the Urca from one of Flint's men and at least make a go of it.

That wouldn't be too certain. At least according to wikipedia, after construction the fort was only armed with some 20 cannons, and in the following years was attacked and severely damaged several times (which was part of the reason why the pirates managed to take over in the first place). I don't think the pirates would have significantly increased that number, given those same cannons could instead be mounted on their ships to help them make more money. So the warship could bring between two and three times the number of guns to bear and would be able to maneuver into whatever spot of the fort is the weakest. It mostly comes down to how many crewmembers Flint actually has left and how many cannons they can effectively man.

Well, the logical thing to do would be for him to vacate the fort, since nobody (including Vane) wants him there except maybe Eleanor Guthrie (I don't think even she knows what she wants most of the time). However, I could see Flint issuing an ultimatum to vacate the fort and then Vane being forced to defend it so nobody gets the impression that someone ordered him around.

I'm really wondering where Eleanor Guthrieis is going to land on this. On the one hand, she has a huge deal in progress with Flint, but she's currently grateful to Vane for saving her and she supported Vane's takeover of the fort because the previous tenant was telling her what to do.

Depends on the elevation. It's quite possible that the ship can't get a high enough angle to fire up at the fort without being so far out to sea that the fort is out of range anyway, whereas the fort can fire down on the ship all day as long as it's in range.

Ned Low, we hardly knew you.

I will say my issues from the first episode abated, he showed more character in the other two. Again it's a shame one of my favourite bit part actors goes out too soon.

I'm glad Vane dealt with him as soon as he did. That's the nice thing about Black Sails and a lot of TV post GoT, plots move a lot faster. They could have stretched out Low for the whole season but they didn't and I think the show is better for it.

I think we're seeing a Flint/Vane heel/face double turn which is great.

I think regarding Eleanor, she's torn between two posturing alpha males but she learns lessons that they don't. Flint and Vane are both entrenched in their mind sets and that will be the death of both of them. Eleanor has shown capacity to learn from her mistakes which makes me think she will get out of this alive and successful.

Wondering if maybe Rackham will join Flint's return to the Urca as an accompanying ship, he needs a big haul to leverage crew so maybe he is desperate enough to do it.

So eager for the next episode, hope they go full cannon porn again.

Well that's my story.

Eleanor has already seen that Vane probably isn't the best choice for long-term colony stability with his "let's incur the wrath of the Carolinas governor, a man who hates pirates." Say what you will about Flint, but he and Eleanor still have the same end goal in mind. Vane just wants to be a pirate. I fully expect her to smuggle the governor's daughter out of the fort next episode.

The use of mortars actually required very specialized ships with greatly different designs than normal seafaring ships. They had to be hugely reinforced internally to deal with the stresses of firing the mortar.

Since they were so well reinforced they ended up being used as expedition vessels for Arctic and Antarctic explorations; Mount Erebus in Antarctica is named for the HMS Erebus (and Mount Terror is named for the HMS Terror), a former mortar ship.

I agree with this except that Eleanor frequently makes stupid decisions regarding both her exes on the show so I find her hard to predict. Well, that and her plot-line of being in a bit over her head and making mistakes because of it.
