here in alberta "the texas of canada" the left of center ndp party has a substantial lead in the polls. if they win, they'd end 44 straight years of conservative majority governments

theyve campaigned on:
-increased corporate tax (from 10 to 12%)
-review of natural resource royalty rates
-$15 minimum wage
-repeal of new health care levy & restoration of the recently cut funding for education & health care
-campaign finance reform (no corporate or unioin donations, reduction in max individual donation)

im voting ndp. theyre the only electable left of center party. theres a green party here but i dont know much about them because they aren't the type to win any seats. this is the first election except i guess mayoral elections where my preferred candidate is viable. all previous elections my ward/district was reliably 60%+ conservative.

its great - all the major news papers (who are owned by the same company) in the last week or so endorsed the conservatives and even in the Sun (thats the type of paper where there's still a girl with her boobs out on page three( the comments section was almost all talking poo poo about them

pretty standard neoliberal - gotta have low corporate taxes so we don't scare away the job creators. and low oil royalties so we dont scare the job creators away. progressive income tax? dont wan tto punish success, do we? its the Alberta Advantage tm.

i mean if the ndp gets in and the sky doesnt fall down it could soften a lot of people's biases.. but the federal conservative party is so pro-oil that i dont think much will change there. people are still seriously pissed about the national energy program
