Even the Mother Jones article has several paragraphs by the author about how he began to catch himself enjoying loving with inmates, becoming desensitized to their requests for basic needs, and began to size up every person he came across after he left work at his job.. And keep in mind the author was locked up in an Iranian prison for 2 years, pretty recently, it's not like he doesn't know what being a prisoner is like, either.
