Sophia gets beaten up by three other inmates for being transgender and then put in SHU for "protection" by the private prison company. Since it's easier to deal with that way. The saddest part is it's implied the company dealt with incidents like this before in other prisons.

Ah, poo poo, that episode's not gonna be fun or enjoyable at all. I guess having a trans character that doesn't end up a statistic was too good to be true forever. Well, thanks for the warning, maybe I'll drink myself into not understanding human speech any more before I watch.

After nearly taking the fall for Vee, I have to agree. She's so impressionable that all it takes is one moderately charismatic person who makes her think she care about her and she'd take the fall for the Trail of Tears.

Most of the inmates are at least somewhat based on real people, too. Sister Ingalls is based on Ardeth Platte, there really was a trans woman inmate, Red really is based on a Russian who was in charge of the kitchen, etc.

Those two ought to get you started, I'll give a few more examples of people put into a position as prison guards, rapidly learning to act like sadists. Even the Mother Jones article has several paragraphs by the author about how he began to catch himself enjoying loving with inmates, becoming desensitized to their requests for basic needs, and began to size up every person he came across after he left work at his job.. And keep in mind the author was locked up in an Iranian prison for 2 years, pretty recently, it's not like he doesn't know what being a prisoner is like, either.

I'd take the results of the Stanford experiment with a grain of salt. It had a ton of problems with it, chief among them being that Zimbardo was not nearly the impartial observer that he should've been, and in fact actually actively influenced the guards in particular to act in certain ways.
